There's a great article in the New York Times this week about the tradition of buying a coffee for a stranger at the same time that you buy your own. They call it caffè__sospeso,__the name for “suspended

coffee” in its birthplace. In some cafes, folks in need may claim a suspended coffee and drink it without cost.

No doubt the free coffee will be welcomed by people who love coffee but for one reason or another don't have the money to buy one. But I also like the opportunity; it offers customers to become philanthropists (慈善家). Every time they order a coffee, they can give one to somebody in need.

This is a tradition that began some 100 years ago in Naples, Italy. In Naples, as reported by the Times, people love this kind of giving:

“To me, the philosophy of the suspended coffee is that you are happy today, and you give a coffee to the world, as a present.” —

  Luigi Solito

“It's a simple act of generosity: an act in which donors and recipients (接受者) never meet each other. The donor doesn't show off and the recipient doesn't have to show gratitude.” —Laura Cozzolino

“Coffee consumptions started earlier than the unification (统一) of Italy by more than 200 years, so the traditions around it are very ancient. In Naples, coffee is a world in itself, both culturally and socially.? — Andrea Illy

The practice of buying suspended coffees has grown in popularity — with websites popping up and hundreds of cafes from Canada to Brazil to Hungary to the US offering the service.

1.Who are suspended coffees intended for?

  A.Cafe goers.

  B.People who can't afford a coffee.

  C.Philanthropists.

D.Coffee lovers who live in Naples.

2.How can someone get a suspended coffee?

A.He can ask for one in any cafe.

B.He can apply for one on websites.

C.He can buy one in a cafe offering the service.

D.He can drink one in a cafe that has prepaid coffees.

3.What does Laura Cozzolino think of buying suspended coffees?

A.She thinks it is a great way of charity.

B.She thinks it is a cheap gift to strangers.

C.She thinks it is an ancient Italian custom.

D.She thinks it is spreading widely in the world.

My best friends gave me a present in a box on my birthday. It was a little heavy, which made me very curiously. So I intended to open it at once but she prevented me do so. She said I mustn't open it until I went back home but gave me a naughty smile. Although there is a strong desire in my mind to know that was inside the box, I just did as she said. On the way to home, all I did was thinking about the puzzle. Finally I opened the box. It was a cup printing with a pink word — friendship. It was so lovely that I liked very much. Now, every time I use a cup, I will think about her and the friendship between us.

根据文章第二段的“No doubt the free coffee will be welcomed by people who love coffee but for one reason or another don't have the money to buy one.”

根据第一段的“the tradition of buying a coffee for a stranger at the same time that you buy your own”以及“In some cafes, folks in need may claim a suspended coffee and drink it without cost.”

根据倒数第三段的“It's a simple act of generosity: an act in which donors and recipients (接受者)

never meet each other. The donor doesn't show off and the recipient doesn't have to show gratitude.”

根据第一段的“the name for

  ‘suspended

  coffee’

in its birthplace”可知,这是起源地的词,而根据第三段的“This is a tradition that began some 100 years ago in Naples, Italy.”

根据后文的“No quiet sighing this time.”

  3.解析:选A call out“大声叫喊”;turn up“出现”;get in“进入”;add to“添加到”。 故选A。

4.解析:选B up“向上”;down“向下”;away“离开”;off“切断,走开”。 下文有“He ran back upstairs to float his

  __16__

  down again.” 故选B。

根据下文的“Where are my other butterflies?”

故选A。

  7.解析:选C devote“献身于”,跟to搭配;depend“依靠”,与on连用;focus“专注”,与on连用; addict“上瘾”,与to连用。

  8.解析:选B show ...around“领……

Where are my other butterflies?故选D。

故选A。

故选A。

故选A。

后面的“instead of down at garbage”和前面对比,故选C。

的时候”;whether“是否”;where“哪里”;how“如何”。

  Ⅲ.第一句:friends→friend

  第二句:curiously→curious

  第三句:do→doing

  第四句:but→and

  第五句:is→was; that→what

  第十句:a→the

Recently, I have viewed “Under the Dome”,a smog documentary released by Chai Jing. I think haze weather results from air pollution. Some factories and private cars emit poisonous gas, which are to blame.

In my daily life, I often walk to school instead of taking my father's car. At home and school, seldom do I switch on the air conditioner. Besides, in the Spring Festival, I persuade my family and my friends not to set off fireworks. Additionally, I frequently tell the people I meet to protect the environment as much as they can.

I will continue to go green and appeal to my classmates to make efforts to live a green life. I hope our sky will be sunny and blue soon.
