Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?

UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition "depending on who needs it".

Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.

Simard talks about "mother trees", usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down "mother trees" with no awareness of these highly complex "tree societies" or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.

"We didn't take any notice of it" Simard says sadly. "Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance." If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.

The underlined sentence "the opposite is true" in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees

  .

  A. compete for survival

  B. protect their own wealth

  C. depend on each other

  D. provide support for dying trees

"Mother trees" are extremely important because they

  .

  A. look the largest in size in the forest

  B. pass on nutrition to young trees

  C. seem more likely to be cut down by humans

  D. know more about the complex "tree societies"

The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refers to

  .

  A. how "tree societies" work

  B. how trees grow old

  C. how forestry industry develops

  D. how young trees survive

What would be the best title for the passage?

  A. Old Trees Communicate Like Humans

  B. Young Trees Are In Need Of Protection

  C. Trees Are More Awesome Than You Think

  D. Trees Contribute To Our Society

  B

One morning, Ann’s neighbor Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. She asked Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog. Ann said that she could watch it only for the day.

Tracy took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers(传单), and put them in mailboxes. Meanwhile, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, warning her two sons not to fall in love with the dog. At the time, Ann’s son Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 21 years old.

Four days later Ann was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. When she arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys’ room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack. Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him the dog went silent.

“If it hadn’t come to get me, the doctor said Jack would have died,” Ann reported to a local newspaper. At this point, no one had called to claim the dog, so Ann decided to keep it.

The next morning Tracy got a call. A man named Peter recognized his lost dog and called the number on the flier. Tracy started crying, and told him, “That dog saved my friend’s son.”

Peter drove to Ann’s house to pick up his dog, and saw Thomas and Jack crying in the window. After a few moments Peter said, “Maybe Odie was supposed to find you, maybe you should keep it.”

What did Tracy do after finding the dog?

  A. She looked for its owner

  B. She gave it to Ann as a gift.

  C. She sold it to the dollar store.

  D. She bought some food for it.

How did the dog help save Jack?

  A. By breaking the door for Ann.

  B. By leading Ann to Jack’s room.

  C. By dragging Jack out of the room.

  D. By attending Jack when Ann was out.

What was Ann’s attitude to the dog according to Paragraph 4?

  A. Sympathetic

  B. Doubtful

  C. Tolerant

  D. Grateful

For what purpose did Peter call Tracy?

  A. To help her friend’s son.

  B. To interview Tracy

  C. To take back his dog.

  D. To return the flier to her.

  C

Let us begin by saying what causes our dreams. Our dreams do not come from another world. They are not messages from some outside source. They are not a look into the future either.

All our dreams have something to do with our feelings, fears, wishes, needs and memories. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping on ice or in snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experience you have today.

So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has effect on you while you are sleeping(feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.) and it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and the interests you have now. This is why children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of their families and prisoners of freedom.

To show you how this is happening while you are asleep and how your needs and wishes can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of the experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbed cotton. He would dream he was in hospital and his charming girlfriend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling his hands gently!

There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believed that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true, in other words, dreaming is a way of having your wishes carried out.

From the passage we learn that our dreams.

Aare quite different from our daily life

Bare the same as our daily life

Chave nothing to do with our daily life

Dare connected with our daily life to a certain degree

Homesick soldiers often dream of their families probably because.

  Atheir families are often hungry

Bthey miss their families very much in the daytime

  Ctheir families are very busy

Dthey haven’t heard from their families for a long time

Some scientists’ explanation that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that didn’t come true.

Ais not widely accepted though it is a bit reasonable

Bis of no use for us

  Cis not correct

  Dis accepted by all people

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

AMost people often plan to do something important in their dreams.

BThe subjects of our dreams are usually something useless.

CSome of the past experience may appear in people’s dreams.

DChildren often dream of fairies because they are tired of school.

Taking a math test can be pretty stressful. Even if you know the material, you can still get the problem wrong. Knowing how to go through your math test and check your work can save you from handing in a test full of mistakes that can be avoided.

  Write it out

You can also check a math problem by writing everything out on paper.

Writing out math problems reduces your chances of missing anything to the lowest possible level, which is a common cause of incorrect answers.

Make sure your answers work by doing the opposite procedure of what your problem calls for, including the answer you got the first time around. In other words, you would use the opposite of this addition problem—subtraction (减法)—to determine whether or not your answer is the correct one.

  Plugging in

You may find that a variable(变量) isn’t good enough or have a problem where you have to solve for a variable.

This is the only real way to assure yourself that the answer you’ve found is correct.

  Check for a reasonable answer

For example, if you get an answer in the millions and you know it should be in the thousands, you’ve likely misplaced a point. Go back through the work on your paper to make sure all of your formulas and calculations are correct. If everything looks okay, do the problem again and compare the result of the second try to what you’ve got on the first try.

  A. Do the opposite

  B. Correct the answers

  C. Plug the variable in the equation (方程) to check it out.

  D. Therefore you’ll improve your grades, as well as your math skills.

  E. It also helps you to figure out everything after you have already finished the test.

  F. If the result of a problem seems to make no sense, it indicates that the answer is incorrect.

  G. This helps you to know what information you have and what information you need to solve.

‘depending on who needs it”’可知,树通过彼此合作和支持存活下来,根据谁需要必需的营养来传送营养。

usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She

explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to

  grow.”

本句中的“didn’t take any notice of”与第四段最后一句中的 “no awareness of”相对应,那么“it”则指代上文中的“complex‘tree societies’or the networks on which they feed”,即“树社会”是如何运行的。故选A。

trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined.”

Tracy took photos of the dog and printed

  off 400 FOUND fliers(传单)…” 故选A。

由第三段中的“When she arrived home…where Ann found

  Jack suffering a heart attack”可知,狗Riley。

由第四段Ann跟报社说的话"If it hadn’t…”可知,如果不是狗领着.Ann找到Jack,Jack可能就死了,也就是狗救了Jack的命。所以可以推断Ann对狗很感激,感激它救了她儿子的命。故选D。

28.C细节理解题。难度较小。由第五段中的“Aman named Peter recognized his lost

3.D (根据’knowing how to go through your math...that can be avoided “可知选D)

37.G(根据“you can aiso check a math problem by writing everything out on paper’选G)

  38.A (跟据opposite和本段内容可选A)

  39.C(根据主题Plug in和 variable可选C)
