  Passage 1

  话题:水上作业

  词数:294

Students from Florida International University in Miami walked on water Thursday for a class assignment. To do it,they wore aquatic (水上的)shoes they designed and created.

Alex Quinones was the first to make it to the other side of a 175-foot lake on campus in record time—just over a minute.Quinones, who wore oversized boat-like shoes, also won last year and will receive $ 500.

Students had to wear the aquatic shoes and make it across the lake in order to earn an “A” on the assignment for Architecture Professor Jaime Canaves'Materials and Methods Construction Class.“It's traditional in a school of architecture to do boats out of cardboard for a boat race.I thought our students were a little bit more special than that,” Canaves said.“We decided to do the walk on water event to take it to the next level.”

A total of 79 students competed in the race this year in 41 teams.Only 10 teams failed to cross the lake.Others who fell got back up and made it to the end.The race is open to all students and anyone in the community. The youngest person to ever participate was a 9-year-old girl who competed in place of her mother, while the oldest was a 67-year-old female.

A large crowd on campus joined Canaves as he cheered on the racers. He shouted encouraging words, but also laughed as some unsteadily made their way to the end.

“A part of this is for them to have more understanding of designing and make it work better,” he said.It is also a lesson in life for the students.

“Anything, including walking on water,is possible,if you do the research, test it and go through the design process seriously.

  Passage 2

  话题:黄石公园大火

  词数:250

Starting in 1972,the National Park Service established a policy for forest fires called Natural Burn.It was acknowledged that some forest fires, such as those caused by lightning, were necessary for forests to maintain balanced ecosystems,so the fire should be allowed to burn. However,a big fire in Yellowstone National Park in 1988 caused this policy to be abandoned since the fire was initially allowed to burn yet soon out of control. As a result, the fire of 1988 destroyed much of Yellowstone, which is America's oldest and most beloved national park.Massive areas of plants were destroyed, and large empty spaces and acres of burned and blackened trees greeted visitors. The rivers and streams were choked with ash,and the ecosystem of the park was changed beyond repair.

In addition, great numbers of animals were killed by the fires that burned out of control. The fires were driven by high winds, moving as many as ten miles a day. Many small animals died in the flames. The fires' rapid advances gave the wildlife little chance to escape.Even today, few of these small forest animals have returned to live in the park.In the years immediately following the fires, the numbers of visitors declined rapidly. No one was interested in seeing a blackened and treeless park on vacation.Yellowstone had previously been famous for its amazing views and unique geological formations such as the geyser Old Faithful. But now its reputation as America's wonder is damaged permanently.

  Passage 5

  话题:男士做饭

  词数:368

Men are spending more and more time in the kitchen encouraged by celebrity (名人) chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver, according to a report from Oxford University.

The effect of the celebrity role models, who have given cooking a more manly picture, has combined with a more general drive towards sexual equality and men now spend more than twice the amount of time preparing meals than they did in 1961.

According to the research by Prof.Jonatahn Gershuny, who runs the Centre for Time Research at Oxford, men now spend more than half an hour a day cooking,up from just 12 minutes a day in 1961.

Prof.Gershuny said,“The man in the kitchen is part of a much wider social trend. There has been 40 years of sexual equality, but there is another 40 years probably to come.”

Women, who a generation ago spent nearly two hours a day cooking, now spend just one hour and seven minutes—a great fall, but they still spend far more time in the kitchen than men.

Some experts have named these men in aprons as “Gastrosexuals (men using cooking skills to impress friends)”,who have been inspired to pick up a kitchen knife by the success of Ramsay,Oliver as well as other male celebrity chefs such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall,Marco Pierre White and Keith Floyd.

“I was married in 1974.When my father came to visit me a few weeks later,I was wearing an apron when I opened the door.He laughed,” said Prof.Gershuny.“That would never happen now.”

Two-thirds of adults say that they come together to share at least three times a week, even if it is not necessarily around a kitchen or dining room table.Prof.Gershuny pointed out that the family meal was now rarely eaten by all of its members around a table—with many “family meals” in fact taken on the sofa in the sitting room, and shared by family members.“The family meal has changed a lot,and few of us eat—as I did when I was a child—at least two meals a day together as a family. But it has survived in a different format.”

  Passage 7

  话题:巧克力

  词数:398

When most of us hear the word chocolate, the verb that comes to mind is probably “eat”,not “drink”,and the most proper adjective would seem to be “sweet”.But for about 90 percent of chocolate's long history,it was strictly a beverage (饮料),and sugar didn't have anything to do with it.

  The Origin of Chocolate

Many modern historians have estimated that chocolate has been around for about 2000 years, but recent research suggests that it may be even older.

In the book The True History of Chocolate, authors Sophie and Michael Coe prove that the earliest linguistic (语言学的) evidence of chocolate consumption dates back three or even four thousand years.

  Valuable and Fashionable Chocolate Beverage

It's hard to discover exactly when chocolate was born, but it's clear that it was cherished from the start. For several centuries in pre-modern Latin America, cacao beans were considered valuable enough to use as currency.100 beans could purchase a good turkey hen, according to a 16th-century Aztec document.

Sweetened chocolate didn't appear until Europeans discovered the Americas and sampled (品尝) the native cuisine.Chocolate didn't suit the foreigners' taste at first—one described it in his writings as “a bitter drink for pigs”—but once mixed with honey or cane sugar,it quickly became popular throughout Spain.By the 17th century, chocolate was a fashionable drink throughout Europe, believed to have nutritious, medicinal functions. But it remained largely a privilege of the rich until the invention of the steam engine made mass production possible in the late 1700s.

  The Birth of Solid Chocolate

In 1828,a Dutch chemist found a way to make powdered chocolate. His product became known as“Dutch cocoa”,and it soon led to the creation of solid chocolate. In 1847,Joseph Fry created the first modern chocolate bar.By 1868,a little company called Cadbury was marketing boxes of chocolate candies in England.Milk chocolate hit the market a few years later.

  Prosperous Chocolate Industry

In America, chocolate was so valued during the Revolutionary War that it was used instead of wages.Even now, statistics show that the humble cacao bean is still a powerful economic force.Chocolate manufacturing is a more than 4-billion-dollar industry in the United States, and the average American eats at least half a pound of the stuff per month.

The sun is setting on a summer night. At the entrance of a deep, dark cave,a few bats fly out.Within a few minutes, millions and millions of bats are pouring out of the cave.

Sounds like a scary horror movie? Believe it or not, this scene takes place all summer long,at Bracken Cave in Texas, where 20 million bats come out to feed on insects every

night.“It is magical,”says Jim Kennedy of Bat Conservation International in Texas.“It is one of the most impressive animal movements on the planet.”

Every March or April,Mexican free-tailed bats migrate up to 1,600 kilometers from

their winter home in Mexico to their American home in Texas, where they raise their

young.Soon after they arrive, each mother gives birth to one baby.As many as 500 baby

bats crowd into 30 cubic centimeters of space, and all those bodies create nice warm temperatures to keep them cozy and comfortable.

If you have ever lost sight of your parents in a crowded playground, you may be wondering how mother bats recognize their children. They use their sense of smell to tell which baby is theirs when it is time for the babies to have milk.

When twenty million bats fly out of one cave opening, they make a column so thick

that they show up on the radar at the nearby airport. It can take three hours for all of them

to get out from the cave.“You can feel the breeze from their wings, and see the plants waving,”says Kennedy.“The movement of all those wings makes a very relaxing soft sound.I've always thought it would make a great relaxation music to help you go to sleep. So much

Of course, there were others that came, but when they saw the two families with garbage bags full of recycled things, they quickly left. However, one woman came in with just 5 cans and looked as if she was in a hurry. So I stopped what I was doing and let her in to recycle her cans.Of course, she was grateful, and it felt good to let her go ahead of me.But that was not the whole story.

  Passage 10

  话题:道歉

  词数:286

There is a problem each of us faces in following advice on emotional healing: apologizing is difficult. We are trapped in what we think of ourselves by holding onto our pride. We can be selfish and not willing to admit our most obvious mistakes.Pride eats away at us as we argue or ignore the mistake.

It's happened to me.I have had too much pride and selfishness to apologize to a loved one I hurt. When I did want to apologize,I couldn't bring myself to face the other person. This is the pride I'm talking about.Maybe apologies come difficult for men because they're expected to be dominant(占优势的).It's like the joke that a man never asks for directions when lost.Ladies are more emotionally open than guys and are willing to express it.Still, both genders wonder how to correctly apologize.

In shifting the focus on apologizing away from you, what does not apologizing do to other people? They feel hurt that you are not willing to communicate your mistake. They lose trust in you as you hide behind your mistake avoiding reality. They become angry with you, wondering why you do not tell them the truth. They may begin to counter your lack of apologies by not apologizing themselves and from this the relationship goes downhill as the two of you get caught in a power struggle.

You need to communicate your mistakes.A mistake you made is like a scratch and by not apologizing you are making the scratch a deeper wound and rubbing salt into it.You need to stop hurting the other person and yourself by learning to apologize. There is real power in apologizing and emotional healing.

B.They expect others to forgive them.

C.They don't want to be considered weak.

D.They aren't good at expressing themselves.

★3.What bad effect will there be if you refuse to apologize for your mistakes?

A.Other people won't pay attention to you.

B.You will lose confidence in yourself.

C.You won't be forgiven even if you tell the truth.

D.The friendship will get hurt and go worse.

4.From the last paragraph,it can be inferred that
