  考点规范练34(选修7 Unit 4)

  .阅读理解

  A

Earlier this year,my family experienced an unexpected tragedy. The kind of tragedy which knocks you out of yourself and turns your whole world upside down.A tragedy which also caused me to be out of work for three months. It was completely unforeseen and I had no time to put together an out of office plan.

I’ve worked at previous companies where this kind of tragedy would have been handled professionally;I would have been given the legally-required money and asked to leave. But at SAS Institute(an American developer of analytics software),my team stepped in and filled in with no questions or hesitations. My work was not left undone. My clients(客户) were patient when those picking up the pieces of projects unrelated to them needed some time to get familiar with the work.My management and colleagues checked on my family regularly. At last,my manager,my entire team and Human Resources Department helped me back to work at my own pace. They even changed my workspace over a weekend to better suit my personal needs before I even came back to work.

You see,SAS creates a family. The special attention to employee happiness and work/life balance makes that family possible. The flexible work environment enables most employees to create a schedule that best suits their personal needs—whether it’s attending a school play or taking an aging parent to the doctor. The Work/Life Office has a wealth of resources for college planning, anger management, sorrow, etc. But,as you can see,it doesn’t stop there. Most employees believe that SAS is their family. We rely on each other. We help each other succeed. We celebrate team successes. We hang out after work. Our kids play together. We laugh together and cry together.

Sure,we have a lot of convenience benefits at SAS.But,what really makes a difference to me is the SAS culture that the outside world doesn’t always see:The balance. The companionship. The management support. The family it allows me to have.

I’m so eager for others to see the side of SAS that I see every day.

  B

It’s wonderful to go to another country, complete a volunteer project and feel that you really have a positive influence. But how can you become an international volunteer?

  * Plan practically.Contact the organization a few months before leaving and find out if there are materials which are rare and hard to attain for the project. What you often consider plentiful here, such as nails or hammers,is in great need in other parts of the world.

  * Do the project together, not on your own.You are a guest in the community. The most successful result is not that you build something and walk away, but that you and the community build something as a team.Share skills and build together.

  * Be flexible. Not everything is going to happen as planned.Often the country doesn’t have the right tools, manpower, transportation or funds to get all the needed work done.In a word,it lacks infrastructure(基础设施).

  * Connect with the people in the community.Often you will have downtime outside of the range of the project.Rather than retreat to the group with whom you traveled,be sure to spend time with the people of the community.Listen to the things about their lives. If you can’t speak the language, smiles do wonders. And you will be surprised—you will find a way to communicate!

Volunteering is a special and life-changing experience for everyone involved.Be prepared that the person who may be changed most is you. It’s a joyful experience which will encourage you to view yourself, your neighbors and your world quite differently.

5.When you volunteer to join in a project, you are advised to .

  A.build something and walk away

B.determine the future of a volunteer

  C.change a person’s opinion of the world

D.benefit volunteers most in their learning

A.What you prepare to become a volunteer.

B.Where volunteers are needed most in the world.

C.Why volunteering is popular with young people.

D.How volunteers develop a relationship with local people.

  Ⅱ.七选五

A small mammal lives in the rocky cliffs(峭壁) of Tian Shan,a mountain range in northwest China. But scientists don’t know much about this tiny creature known as the Ili pika(伊犁鼠兔).1.

In fact,it had been more than 20 years since anyone had seen an Ili pika. But Weidong Li,who first discovered the animal, and a team of volunteers combed the mountains looking for the animals.2.

“They found it hiding behind a rock, and they realized they had found the pika,”Tatsuya Shin,a Chinese naturalist said.

Li was studying diseases in a mountainous region of northwest China when he first discovered the 8-inch mammal in 1983.3. In 1985,he found two more pikas. When researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences took a closer look at Li’s discovery, they confirmed that it was indeed a new species.

In the early 1990s,scientists estimated(估计) that there were about 2,000 Ili pikas running across mountain cliffs in China. Now there are probably fewer than 1,000.Li thinks that the Ili pika population has decreased by nearly 70 percent since he saw the first one in 1983.

“This tiny species could be extinct anytime,”Li said.“4. ”

Big changes to the Ili pika habitat are probably contributing to the pikas’ lower population. In addition,Ili pikas don’t reproduce often, and other animals are eating grass where they live.Changes in local temperatures have driven Ili pikas to higher elevations(海拔) in the mountains.

Li and others are encouraging wildlife groups to help protect this creature.Li searches full-time for Ili pikas.5. Li is also working to create a wildlife reserve to help protect Ili pikas.

  A.It became endangered soon.

B.They finally spotted one last summer.

C.Lots of animals were discovered in the mountains.

D.Li didn’t know what it was,and neither did the locals.

E.Only three dozen of them have ever been seen by people.

F.They don’t exist in the sites where they used to be anymore.

G.He continues to study the animals and tries to find ways to help them.

I went to England last summer as a exchange student, and stayed there for three months.I used to thinking we had pretty various after-school activities. However,I was surprised to find their projects were even diverse.I made friend with the daughter of my home-stay family, which was a college student. He was a member of different kinds of clubs,so I took the chance to join in some clubs, too. Can you believe I make a robot in the LEGO Club?I felt very proudly because I got first prize with my Lego robot.
