Though larger cities were mostly spared,Sunday’s tornadoes damaged some small towns in the middle of the U.S.One of the hardest hit was Van,Texas,a town of about 2,600 people located 70 miles southeast of Dallas.Winds there reached up to 140 miles per hour and damaged about 30 percent of the area.Weather experts say it was the strongest tornado to hit the town during more than 70 years.
Emergency workers in Van moved quickly to help those affected, but two people were killed and more than two dozen were injured by the tornado’s winds.A driver in the nearby town of Corsicana was killed by floodwaters that had risen after the storm.
In Lake City,Iowa,a tornado tore the roof off South Central Calhoun High School. One hundred and fifty people had gathered in the safety of the school’s basement, and all escaped without major harm.
Nine people were injured in the 130-mph winds of a tornado that touched down in Delmont,South Dakota, but tornadoes weren’t the only severe weather that state saw on Sunday.Residents in the Black Hills region were faced with a late-spring snowfall of 10 to 18 inches.
Scientists measure tornadoes using the Enhanced Fujita(EF) Scale. It categorizes tornadoes based on the amount of damage they cause and their estimated wind speed.EF1 tornadoes are the weakest, while EF5 tornadoes are the severest. The tornado in Van was categorized as an EF3.
Although tornadoes can happen in any state, they are most common in the central U.S.This is why that part of the country is nicknamed(给……起绰号) Tornado Alley.Though this past weekend’s storms were damaging, they were not abnormal for this time of year.More tornadoes hit the U.S.in May than in any other month, according to the National Weather Service(NWS).
“We’ve had at least one tornado reported somewhere in the nation every day since May 2,”weather expert Greg Carbin said.“It’s a dangerous time of year.”

To the woman and child who sat at table 9,
My name is Tony Posnanski.I am the manager of the restaurant you came into a few weeks ago.I was asked to talk to a table close to yours.I did and they said your child was being very loud.I heard some yelling while I was talking to that table.
When I got to your table, you looked at me and said,“Do you know what it is like to have a child with autism(自闭症)?”You were not rude when you asked the question. In fact, you were quite sincere.
In 15 years I do not have a lot of memorable moments as a restaurant manager. However,I do remember everything about the day my son was born and the day I married my wife.
I know what I was supposed to say when I went to your table. But I did not do any of that.
Instead I just told you I hoped your meal was awesome and that your meal was on me tonight.I do not think the other guests I spoke to were happy about it,but I didn’t tell them what you said to me.
You asked me a question that I did not answer. The truth is I do not know what it is like to have a child with autism. However,I know what it is like to be a father.I know what it is like to want to spend more time with his children.
Honestly,I wrote this to you and your beautiful daughter because I wanted to thank you both.
You have given me a great restaurant memory. You also taught me a valuable lesson.Sometimes doing the right thing does not make everyone happy;just the people who need it the most.
Sincerely,
Tony Posnanski

B.What do you think about our dishes?
C.What’s wrong with your daughter?

How to Motivate Teens to Read
With lots of studies showing the benefits of reading, how can teachers motivate their students to open a good book or power up their e-reader?
Lead by Example
Require students to spend at least 20 minutes in independent reading every day.By taking part in this regular activity themselves, teachers show that they consider reading very important.1.
Freedom to Choose
2. For those who forget their books, provide them with access to novels, magazines or newspapers during required reading time.Consider allowing students to use their personal e-readers.
Share Your Excitement
Teachers’ excitement for a particular book may have a huge influence on their students.3. Then when it comes time for them to choose a new book, suggest your favorite.
Visit the Library
Make time to visit the school library and require students to borrow at least one book of interest.4. By doing so,they can make sure the book fits their interests.
Stay Informed
Teachers can help motivate students by finding out the latest popular young adult reading matter, such as “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and the “Uglies” by Scott Westerfeld.
With varied activities competing for students’ time and attention,it can be difficult to encourage youngsters to read.5.
Teachers who make independent reading a daily part of the classroom experience and find creative ways to motivate their students may be on the way to writing a success story.
A.They can read books in silence.
B.Give students a taste of what the book is about.
C.There is science fiction that they are interested in.
D.Encourage them to spend some time reading the book before borrowing.
E.However, there is little doubt that reading can help with students’ studies.
F.Therefore, they always find time to read even though they are terribly busy.
G.Allow students to pick their own literature,as long as it is suitable for school reading.〚导学号95480036〛

.Dear David,
I’m glad to receive your letter. As you know,a new smoking ban has taken effect in Beijing since June 1,2015.The ban,the toughest to date, demands all indoor public places, working places and public transport be free of smoking.Smoking in kindergartens, primary and middle schools, stadiums and children’s hospitals is not allowed too.
The law will offer the public a better place to live and work, which will result in improving their health. However,in my opinion,a maximum fine of 200 yuan isn’t enough to stop people from smoking.Quitting smoking is hard for smokers,so there’s still a long way to go before our no smoking goal can be achieved.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
