Opened in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the first longspan bridge to carry motor traffic, and it quickly became the model for the great suspension bridges of the following century. Spanning New York's East River, it provided the first traffic artery between Manhattan Island and Brooklyn. Before that, the only transportation was by ferries, which were slow and could be dangerous in winter.

The construction of a bridge over the East River had been discussed since the early 19th century, but the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 deflected all consideration of the project. When the war ended in 1865, the bridge became an important issue once more. In 1867, the New York State passed an act setting up the New York Bridge Company for the purpose of constructing a bridge between Manhattan Island and Brooklyn.

John Augustus Roebling was chosen to design the bridge. Born in Germany in 1806, he held aggressive views as a student and was listed by the German police as a dangerous figure. He emigrated to America in 1830 to escape political discrimination.

Roebling proposed a bridge with a span of 1,500 feet (465 m), with two towers in the East River serving as the main piers. The bridge that was actually built is longer—1,597 feet (486 m), the longest suspension bridge at that time.

We all know the saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, and the fact that there are a whole lot of strangelooking people out there happily loved up would suggest that it's true. But scientists have now performed the biggest test so far, analyzing the preferences of more than 35,000 people, and have shown that we really do all have a unique “type”.

In fact, the study showed that even identical twins, who share nearly 100 percent of their DNA, aren't attracted to the same people, suggesting that it's our experiences, more than our genes, that determine whether we find someone hot or not.

“We estimate that an individual's aesthetic(审美的)preferences for faces agree about 50 percent, and disagree about 50 percent, with others,” explained Laura Germine from Harvard University, and Jeremy Wilmer of Wellesley College, lead researchers of the project.

“This fits with the phenomenon that on one hand, fashion models can make a fortune with their good looks, while on the other hand, friends can endlessly debate about who is attractive and who is not,” they added.“Of course, there are some things that people seem to find pretty much universally pleasant to look at,e.g.,most people prefer faces that are symmetric(对称的).” But after analyzing the facial preferences of more than 35,000 volunteers, the researchers found that,it was experiences that seemed to be what shape the “eye of the beholder”.And those experiences are highly specific to each individual.

So in other words,it's not your family, where you grew up,or how much money your parents make that shape who you're attracted to,it's things like the magazines you read, the social activities you've taken part in,and even your first boyfriend or girlfriend, that determine these preferences.

  文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了我们认为谁漂亮的不是由我们的基因,而是我们的经历决定的。

28.What does the underlined word “identical” in Para 2 mean?

  A.unique

A.To tell us they own beautiful faces which help them earn money.

B.To emphasize they have symmetric faces which people widely enjoy.

C.To show people's preference for faces partly agree and disagree.

D.To explain the role genes play in people's preference.

  答案:C 写作意图题。根据第三段和第四段可知,作者举时尚模特的例子是为了说明第三段的观点,人们对脸的偏爱与否各占一部分。

30.Which of the following statements agrees with the theme of the passage?

A.Symmetric faces look beautiful in eastern culture but not in western culture.

B.The more beautiful a person looks, the more likely he is to get a success.

C.A person's aesthetic preferences for beauty will remain the same in the future.

D.Some think the movie star Huang Xiaoming handsome while some don't think so.

  答案:D 细节理解题。文章谈到人们对于美的认识因人而异,是由自己的经历所决定的。有些人喜欢,而有些人则不喜欢。D项恰好是这样一个例子,所以选D。

What transportation do you use get around town? Perhaps you should try a Segway!

The Segway is perfect for short journey. It is an electric vehicle that consists of a platform between two wheels, with a pole that connects the platform to the handlebars. To ride it, you step up onto the platform, and control the Segway by moving your body. Lean forwards to go faster, and backwards to slow down.

On older models, direction is controlled by a twist grip on the left handlebar. This varies the speeds between the two motors; a decrease in the speed of the left wheel would turn the Segway to the left. With newer models you simply lean to the left or right. Meanwhile, a gyroscope detects your movements and prevents the machine from falling over. The Segway has a maximum speed of 19 km per hour and a range of about 38 km. After that, you need to plug it in and recharge the battery.

Segways are helpful in various situations. People with mobility problems can now enjoy walks in the country with their friends and family. Some golfers use them as an alternative to the golf cart. And dog owners now have an easier way to take the dog to the park. A few police forces use Segways, too. They allow officers to move quickly while maintaining contact with the public. They are also becoming a common sight on airport. However, the most popular use is in tourism, particularly for city tours. Visit any major tourist city in summer, sit outside a cafe for a while and there is a good chance you will see a group of tourists passing on Segways.

·Friends matter. __40__ Who you hang out with definitely influences how you spend money and the decisions you make. Without being overbearing, remind them how important it is to have positive friends who build them up instead of bringing them down.

  Dear Ms.J.K.Rowling,

It is great pleasure to write to you. I like reading all of your Harry Potter book. A few days before, I listened to a radio programme about you. Now I know that you teach English at home and in others countries before you started writing books. I also know that you could only write the first book while your baby daughter was asleep, so you worked on them for five years. That was a very much difficult job. Your son David and your daughter Jessica must be proud for you. I hope I can become as successfully as you when I grow up. Thank you for spending time read my letter.

“very”修饰形容词,“very much”修饰动词。

  答案:

I_feel_it_a_great_honor_to_be_welcomed_to_get_involved_in_such_a_meaningful_activity. As for me, reading an instructive book is just like talking with a learned person. It is universally acknowledged that reading lays a solid foundation for further learning.Additionally, a wide range of reading can broaden our horizons and enrich our amateur life.As a matter of fact, I believe, only through reading can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.

When it comes to the books I've read, A Global History has had a farreaching influence on me.The book gives the history of the world from the historical age to modern times. Not only has it incredibly enlarged my knowledge and benefited me to see the world logically, but also got me enthusiastic about history.
