  Australia’s beautiful achievement

It is “Australia’s most famous coastal drive and one of the greatest drives on the planet”,said CNN.

The Great Ocean Road in Australia’s state of Victoria stretches 243 kilometers from Torquay to Allansford. Here mountains meet oceans, rainforests meet dramatic cliffs, and lighthouses meet national parks.

“At the end of the route you’ll want to U-turn and ride it again,” noted CNN.

“Often tourists can’t believe it’s so close to the water;one minute they’re 200 or 300 feet above the water;next they’re at sea level,” Peter Dalton,a tourist bus driver, told the Australia Geographic Journal.“There’s no better scene than driving along the Ocean Road in the first hour after sunrise.”

Besides great views, another major attraction on this road is the 12 Apostles,a group of limestone formations (石灰岩层) that rise above the ocean.

In addition, the iconic road crosses “one of the most civilized parts of rural Australia—a region rich in farm-fresh produce, seafood and cool-climate wines”,according to The Telegraph.

The road is also a masterpiece of human achievement, which has been called “Victoria’s largest war memorial.”

Between 1919 and 1932,more than 3,000 returned soldiers built the road to honor the over 60,000 Australians killed in World War Ⅰ.

Sleeping in tents through violent storms, workers built the road by hand, using picks, shovels (铲子),wheelbarrows (独轮车) and explosives.

“Its construction provided long-term jobs for returned servicemen, recognized their sacrifice at war,and for generations has enabled people from across the world to enjoy this spectacular coastline,” Australia’s Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke told Australia Geographic.

1.What’s the best time of a day to drive along the Ocean Road, according to Peter Dalton?

  A.In the early morning.

  B.Late in the morning.

  C.At noon.

  D.Around sunset.

根据第四段中“There’s no better scene than driving along the Ocean Road in the first hour after sunrise.”

B.To honor the Australians who sacrificed their lives at war.

C.To make the scenic spot known to tourists across the world.

D.To make it more convenient to sell local produce, seafood and wines.

根据第八段“Between 1919 and 1932,more than 3,000 returned soldiers built the road to honor the over 60,000 Australians killed in World War Ⅰ.”

3.What is the article mainly about?

A.The history of the Great Ocean Road.

B.The attractive views along the Great Ocean Road.

C.What makes the Great Ocean Road appealing to tourists.

  Jars of memories

Our children grew up on peanut butter (花生酱) and jelly (果酱) sandwiches. The right jelly delights them, and homemade one is the only choice.

I wasn’t the jelly maker in this family. My mother-in-law was.She didn’t provide a wide range of flavors (味道),either. It was either grape or blackberry. And since we liked both flavors,we usually picked whatever jar was at the front of the pantry

It was always there.Jelly making was just a way of life for her.She always did it,following the same rituals—from picking the fruit to setting the finished jelly on the homemade shelves.

This past December,my mother-in-law passed away.Among the things in the house to be divided up were the remaining canned (罐装的) goods. Each of us chose from the many jars of tomato juice, green beans and jelly.

The other day I reached in there to get jelly for a quick sandwich, and there it was.Sitting all alone on the far side of the shelf was a small jar of grape jelly.Written on the lid with a black marker was “GR” for grape and the year the jelly had been made.

As I picked up the jar,I suddenly realized something that I had failed to see earlier. This was the last jar we would ever have from my mother-in-law’s patient, loving hands. Our children had never known a day without their grandmother’s jelly. It seems like such a small thing, but it is a great treasure.

Holding that last jar in my hand,my heart traveled back to meeting my mother-in-law for the first time.I saw her crying on our wedding day,and later, kissing and loving our children.I saw her walking in the woods or riding the wagon (马车).I saw her surrounded by loving children at her funeral.

I put the jelly back on the shelf. No longer was it just a jar of jelly.I guess I believed that as long as it was there,my mother-in-law would always live on.

5.What can we learn from the first three paragraphs?

A.The author preferred grape jelly to blackberry jelly.

B.The author used to be her mother-in-law’s assistant when she made jelly.

C.The author’s mother-in-law loved to make many different flavors of jelly.

D.The author’s mother-in-law always made jelly for the family.

6.The underlined word “rituals” in the third paragraph most probably means .

  A.ceremonies B.occasions

  C.practices D.techniques

由第三段“It was always there.Jelly making was just a way of life for her.She always did it,following the same rituals— from picking the fruit to setting the finished jelly on the homemade shelves.”

7.When the author found the last jar of jelly, .

A.she decided to share it with her children

B.she realized she had to learn to make jelly herself

C.she was filled with memories of her mother-in-law

D.she burst into tears because of her great love for her mother-in-law

从“Holding that last jar in my hand,my heart traveled back to meeting my mother-in-law for the first time”以及后文描写的具体事件可知C项正确。

  答案:C

8.What does the author intend to tell us with the story?

A.Love from your family often hides in small things.

B.Homemade food brings your family good memories.

C.We should cherish our families in everyday life.

D.It’s never too late to show love for our families.

从“It seems like such a small thing,but it is a great treasure”可知作者写这篇文章的目的是用生活中的小事件表达了自己对家人的热爱。

  答案:A

  请以“An Album or a Tape”为题,用英语写一篇短文。

  An Album or a Tape

We are leaving school and we decide to give a gift to Mr.Li who has taught us for three years.

  An Album or a Tape

We are leaving school and we decide to give a gift to Mr.Li who has taught us for three years. Two suggestions have been provided by our classmates. One is that we may give him an album with photos of all the students in our class. The other suggestion is that a tape in which our best wishes are recorded should be given to him.

In my opinion,we had better buy an album for Mr.Li.First,an album is easier to be kept than a tape.A tape may be easily destroyed a few years later and does not work.Second,I think, the photos in the album can easily remind Mr.Li of his lovely students and the good days when he got together with us.Third, voice may be changed a lot after many years as to us young students, while faces do not have such great changes. In a word,I suggest we take photos in time and present them in the album to Mr.Li.
