China honored 30 veterans on Wednesday for their contributions to the country’s victory against Japanese aggression.
The ceremony at the Great Hall of the People took place a day before the victory parade in Tian’ anmen Square marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World WarⅡ.
Receiving a salute from an honor guard, President Xi Jinping approached the veterans and awarded them commemorative medals. Many of them are aged about 100 and use wheelchairs, but some of them stood and saluted.
Ten of the medals were awarded to foreign veterans or relatives of foreign soldiers who died fighting for China during World WarⅡ.
After awarding the medals, Xi said that many heroes emerged during the 14 years of resistance against Japanese aggression, including fighters from overseas countries such as Canada and India.
“A promising nation cannot go without heroes or pioneers. The Chinese people will never forget the foreign soldiers who fought for China during World WarⅡ, and the 10 foreign veterans present today are their representatives, ”he said.
Tong Rongfang, 90, from Beijing said it was the happiest day of his life after he received his gold-gilt medal embossed with a design featuring the Yangtze River and an olive branch. Tong’s father, Tong Linge, was a senior general in the Kuomintang who fought during the Lugouqiao Incident, or the Marco Polo Bridge Incident.
This conflict, which broke out in a Beijing suburb in July 1937, led to full-scale war between China and Japan. Tong was the first senior general who died after China mounted all out resistance against the Japanese aggression.
The younger Tong said, “My father’s contribution has been officially recognized. I’m glad the leaders have attached unprecedented(空前的)significance to the issue. ”
Makhmut Gareev, a veteran of the Soviet Army, who fought against the Japanese with Chinese soldiers in Northeast China, said China was the main Eastern battlefield during the World Anti-Fascist War, and its people fought hard and heroically, playing a significant role in the victory.
“Local Chinese showed us such great hospitality, and I will never forget the scene as we were leaving when they waited to see us off. ”
Shi Baodong, 90, from Jiangsu province, who fought for five years during the conflict, described the ceremony as“touching and unforgettable”. He felt his contribution had been recognized.
The medals ceremony was the first event in the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
Then, Xi, along with more than 30 foreign leaders, attended theⅤ-Day parade in Tian’anmen Square on Thursday morning.

Nowadays, Chinese love to consume TV shows, particularly American TV shows. Some shows have become especially popular for certain reasons. When you meet Chinese people, try to mention these shows to strike up a conversation with them, as it is likely that they are fans of these shows.
1. The Big Bang Theory
Talk to any young Chinese person, and chances are that they are crazy about the lives of Sheldon, Raj, Howard, and Leonard. Many viewers describe themselves as in love with Sheldon, and they appreciate the science jokes and content on the show. People admire the young geniuses in the show and the large amount of funny jokes, but also recognizes the show’s message that being smart isn’t everything in life. The university lifestyle depicted in the show and the friendships and witty arguments between the main characters are especially attractive to Chinese audiences.
2. House of Cards
China is ridding itself of corruption(腐败)today. It’s no surprise, then, that a thrilling and brilliant drama about political corruption currently catches on in China. China is the top country where the show is being wildly pirated(盗版)on Chinese websites. The Chinese government has also featured prominently on the show. Even high-ranking Chinese political officials have been known to watch religiously this show and keep up with the exploits of Frank Underwood. Some Chinese politicians consider Underwood as a role model, fans create special videos to honor the show, and many viewers like to learn about American politics and society from the show, even though what they learn from the show may not be totally accurate. It’s interesting to wonder what a Chinese version of this show would be like.
3. Gossip Girl
China has become much wealthier in the last several decades, and people across the world always like to observe rich people’s lives and imagine themselves being rich as well. Like the Chinese movie series Tiny Times, Gossip Girl rose to fame in China because Chinese viewers enjoyed watching the lives of rich Westerners and living wealthily through the characters. Many Chinese fans also admired the romance between Chuck and Blair, and strongly supported them getting married. The show is full of passionate love affairs, pleasant young people, and brilliant drama that fascinated Chinese audiences.
4. Two Broke Girls
Many young Chinese viewers like following the struggles of Max and Caroline as they attempt to earn money and build their own cupcake business. This show has become extremely popular in China and is frequently downloaded online. One reason why this sitcom has been successful in China is that for many Chinese who are young like Max and Caroline, they must deal with the same problems in life. Finding work and earning enough money to join the middle class is difficult for many Chinese people today. The phone ID flashed, “Emergency Vet”. “Oh, no, ”I whispered. I could not lose Merlin now.
Ron and I had tried to have children for a long time with depressing results. I threw myself into my work. Any maternal feelings I had were spent on Merlin.
I couldn’t wait to get home from work each night. I wanted to pick up that warm bundle of loving fur and nestle him. I wanted to sing “Rock-a-bye Merlin”, as I did every night as he would put his paws around my neck.
Merlin was my comfort especially at times when I wondered if God was listening. But last night something had changed. Not only did I sing “Rock-a-Bye Merlin”, but I asked, “What will I do after you’re gone? ”
Although Merlin was 19 years old, a senior in the age of a cat, he didn’t look or act that way. I didn’t want to accept the fact that he was nearing the end of his lifetime. My job at the law firm was so demanding and stressful that I couldn’t imagine getting through the day without Merlin waiting to greet me at home.
I dialed the vet’s number. I asked for my husband but he already left. Then I took a breath and asked the question that no one wanted to ask, “Is my Merlin still alive? ”The nurse said “yes. ”
Ron came home and said that Merlin had almost no red blood cells left. White blood cells were replacing them. Merlin would need expensive transfusions most likely on a monthly basis. We both knew Merlin was running out of time. I asked Ron to drive me to the vet so I could say goodbye to my little boy cat but he was beat tired and it was late. Ron said if Merlin was still alive the next morning then he would take me to the vet.
The next morning I called the vet. Merlin had survived the night.
After driving to the vet, I went into the examining room. The nurse brought Merlin and placed him on an examining table on his side. His eyes were tightly shut. I thought he died already. I carefully edged my hand to reach his body. His body felt warm, but when I spoke his name there was no response. No response to his name or that I was there and that I loved him. I was extremely sad.
In that examining room I felt helpless. I wondered how many people in an examining room felt as helpless as I did.
Feeling driven to prayer I yelled, “God this isn’t good enough. I need to see my Merlin the way I remember him, I need a miracle and I need it now! ”
At that moment, God granted a miracle. Merlin’s favorite compliment entered my mind. I said, “Merlin, You are beautiful and you are gorgeous, do you hear me? ”
One eye opened.
I said “Gotcha. ”I kept repeating those words.
Merlin opened the other eye and, one limb at a time, got up. He was waiting for that phrase. He wanted to hear that he was beautiful and gorgeous again.
Then I experienced another miracle.
There was no sound in that examining room until Merlin started walking to me. From out of nowhere, or maybe from heaven, I clearly heard a song we sang in church often: “It is well with my soul. ”I remembered thinking, “Yes, it is well with my soul. I got to see my little boy cat one more time. ”
Merlin walked to me. He put his face in mine, which he had never done before. He rubbed a circle around my face twice. Merlin said goodbye with his face and marked me for life.
Ron appeared shocked that Merlin was up and had walked to me. I said to Merlin, “Tell God you are a good boy and how much we love you” and then handed him back to the nurse.
Tears of gratitude poured forth in memory of a miracle. You see for nineteen years God spoke to me through a special cat named “Merlin”. On Merlin’s last day, God proved he heard me when he granted a miracle. That miracle gave me time to say goodbye.
