Passage 1
16
Scientists and experts have proved the uniqueness of finger-prints and discovered that no exactly similar pattern is passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case.
The ridge(隆起)structure on a person's fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries. Burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by a new one, which bears a reproduction of the original pattern.
17
Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take.
Finger-prints can be made very easily with printer’s ink. They can be recorded easily. 18
Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case. A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain.
19
. When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eye.
20
Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained.
A. Special techniques are used to “develop” them.
B. A fingerprint is an impression of the ridge structure.
C. It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed.
D. With special methods, identification can be achieved successfully within a short time.
E. Some criminals may leave their fingerprints at the scene of a crime.
F. His finger-prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident.
G. Every human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable.
Passage 2
Americans use many expressions with the word “dog”. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well.
16
However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog's life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world.
17
They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
18
This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
19
People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard.
20
A. Still, people say every dog has its day.
B. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.
C. Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways.
D. Dogs are their best friends and they are loyal to people.
E. There are many other expressions waiting for you to explore.
F. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs.
G. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical
care.
Passage 3
Watching a sporting event with family and friends under the sun is a great experience in summer.
16
In the United States, heat exposure led to 8,000 deaths between 1979 and 2003. Luckily, a little prevention can go a long way towards making sure of an enjoyable day.
Know the danger
Heat-related illnesses do not require record-breaking temperatures to occur.
17
The body’s temperature can reach 106 or 107 degrees Fahrenheit on a 90-degree day, creating a potentially deadly situation. Factors such as age, weight or a medical condition can influence people.
Drink plenty of water
18
Sweating is your body’s key way to keep cool, so drink water to stay well hydrated(含水的) before you feel thirsty. A cool beer may sound perfect on a hot day, but drink responsibly. Alcohol stops the body’s cooling system and causes you to go to the bathroom frequently.
19
Wear light-colored and loosely fitting clothing, so air can go around your body and help keep you cool. A hat is a must to help you keep cool, since your head contains many blood vessels(血管), and sun block(防晒乳) is always a good idea.
Take action
What should you do if you are suffering from the heat while watching your favorite event?
Get up and go. It is a simple piece of advice, but could make the difference between a quick recovery and something more severe that requires medical attention. The ideal thing is to move yourself from the position you’re in to an area that is a little cooler. 20
A. Dress for the occasion
B. Weather-related causes
C. In hot weather, it is essential to stay hydrated.
D. You may miss a little of the action, but it beats missing a lot.
E. But when you add sun exposure to the crowds, the results can be deadly.
F. It is also important to take advantage of services the equipment provides.
G. Temperatures between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit can be dangerous.
Passage 4
Everyone has feelings of anxiety, nervousness, tension and stress from time to time. Here are a few ways to help us manage them.
16
We all think we know how to relax. But calming down in front of the TV or computer isn’t true relaxation. Depending on what you’re watching or doing, it could even make you more nervous. The same is true for alcohol, drugs or tobacco. They may seem to relieve anxiety or stress, but it’s a false state of relaxation that’s only temporary. What the body really needs is a relaxation technique—like deep breathing, tai chi or yoga—that has a physical effect on the mind.
Get enough sleep, nutrition and exercise. Get the right amount of sleep for your need—not too much or too little. Eat well—choose fruit, vegetables, low-fat proteins and whole grains for long-term energy instead of the short bursts that come from too much sugar or caffeine.
17
In that way, your brain and body can operate at their best.
Connect with others.
18
Doing things with those we feel close to deepens our bonds, which allows us to feel happier and less upset about things. If you feel worried or nervous about something, talking about it with someone who listens and cares can help you feel more understood and better able to deal with it. You’ll be reminded that everyone has these feelings sometimes. You’re not alone.
19
Heading out for a walk in the park or a hike in the woods can help anyone feel peaceful. Choose somewhere you feel safe so that you can relax and enjoy your surroundings. Walking or hiking can offer additional benefit or exercise. Invite a friend or two—or a family member—along and enjoy feeling connected to people as well.
Think positively. A great way to keep our minds off the worry track is to focus our thoughts on things that are good, beautiful and positive.
20
A.Spend time with your friends or family.
B.Express yourself to others.
C.Connect with nature.
D.Keep away from stress and anxiety.
E.Allow yourself to dream and wish for the best.
F.Exercise to send oxygen to every cell in the body.
G.Choose a correct way to relax.
Passage 5
If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning the fact. ____16____ When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. ____17____ One of them exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.
If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. ____18____, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever; but all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means––practice.
Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? ____19____ Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things:they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, time and prices, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.
____20____, learn from the poor: practice remembering.
A. What do you think of it?
B. Yet many people do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way.
C. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory
D. So if you want a good memory
E. When someone else says that he is poor in the health
F. Why is this?
G. The position is exactly the same as that of two people.
Passage 6
Although problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or the other, you’ll have to stand up and say – problem, I don’t want you in my life.
16
Problems with friends, parents, girlfriends, husbands, and children – the list goes on. Apart from these, the inner conflicts within ourselves work, too. These keep adding to our problems. Problems come in different shapes and colors and feelings.
But good news is that all problems can be dealt with. Now read on to know how to solve your problems.
Talk, it really helps. What most of us think is that our problem can be understood only by us and that no talking is going to help.
17
Talking helps you move on and let go.
Write your problems.
18
When you write down your problems, you are setting free all the tension from your system. You can try throwing away the paper on which you wrote your problems. By doing this, imagine yourself throwing away the problems from your life.
Don’t lose faith and hope. No matter what you lose in life, don’t lose faith and hope. Even if you lose all your money, family… you should still have faith.
19
Your problems aren’t the worst. No matter what problem you get in life, there’re another one million people whose problems are huger than yours.
20
Your problems might just seem big and worse, but in reality they can be removed.
Go about and solve your problems because every problem, however big or small, always has a way out.
A. But the truth is that when you talk about it, you’re setting free the negative energies that have been gathering within you.
B. When we have a problem, a pressing, critical, urgent, life-threatening problem, how do we try and solve it?
C. Tell yourself: when they can deal with them, why can’t I?
D. Of course, we’ve been fighting troubles ever since we were born.
E. We can often overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.
F. Having a personal diary can also be of huge help if you don’t want a real person to talk with.
G. With faith and hope, you can rebuild everything that you lose.
Passage 7
16
Sometimes they try to get out of a class to escape a teacher they don’t like. Here is some advice to solve this problem.
Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this teacher?” Even if you don’t worship (崇拜) his or her personality or lectures, dig deep until you find a subject in which he or she is very knowledgeable. Focus on that part of the teacher’s personality, and use him or her as a tool for learning. Not only will you gain more knowledge in that subject, but a closer relationship with your teacher may help you understand one another better.
17
Talk to students who are doing well in the class and ask them for tips, tools, and a plan of action to get along with the teacher better.
18
If you still can’t get along, make an appointment with the school guidance counselor (辅导员). He or she will offer many tips and suggestions for you to get out of difficult teacher relationships.
19
That means they can help you and your teachers get rid of the bad impression on each other.
20
Your parents can meet with your teacher and try to work it out.
Teachers are there for more than just homework, and they know about more than just their subject matter. They can help you learn how to function as an adult and a lifelong learner.
Undoubtedly, these will be a few teachers along the way who you will always remember and who might change your life forever.
A. Sometimes a guidance counselor can act as a mediator between you and the teacher.
B. If you’re too shy to talk to another student, study his or her actions and behavior in the classroom and try to follow that lead.
C. Guidance counselors have the right to blame teachers.
D. There must be something good in every teacher for you to learn from.
E. Students find it easy to get along well with their teachers.
F. If your relationship problems can’t be solved in school, then it’s time to tell your parents or guardians.
G. Students don’t always get along well with their teachers.
