My mother was a domestic.Through her work, she observed that successful people spent a lot more time reading than they __2__ watching television. She announced that my brother and I could only watch two to three preselected TV programmes during the week. With our free time, we had to read two books each from the Detroit Public Library and __3__ written book reports to her. She would mark them up with check marks and highlights. Years later we realized her marks were a __4__. My mother was illiterate.

She said, “Okay, I'll give you all the money I make this week scrubbing floors and cleaning bathrooms, and you can buy __7__ food and pay the bills. With money __8__, you can have all the Italian knit shirts you want.” I was very __9__ with that arrangement but once I got through allocating money, there was __10__ left. I realized my mother was a financial genius to be able to keep a roof over our heads and any kind of food on the table, __11__ buy clothes. I also realized that immediate satisfaction wasn't going to get me anywhere. Success required intellectual preparation. I went back to my __12__ and became an Astudent again, and eventually I __13__ my dream and I became a doctor.
My story is really my mother's story—a woman with __14__ formal education or property who used her position as a parent to change the lives of many people around the globe. There is no job __15__ than parenting. This I believe.

Our children grew up on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, although my husband and I sometimes sneak one late at night with a glass of milk. I believe that the success of this
__1__
loved concoction(混合物) lies not in the brand of peanut butter, but rather in the jelly. The right jelly
__2__
the palate, and homemade is the only choice.
My motherinlaw was the jelly maker in this family. This limited choice was a welcome
__3__
in the days of toddlers, siblings and puppies. All I did was to
__4__
baby food jars, which my motherinlaw would seal with wax(蜡) and
__5__
back home with us. Whenever I wanted to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, all I had to do was reach for one of little jars. Jelly making was just a way of
__6__
for my motherinlaw. She always did it, setting the
__7__
jelly on the shelves.
My fatherinlaw died several years ago and this past December, she also
__8__. Among the things in the house to be divided by her children were the
__9__
canned goods.
The other day I reached my pantry(储物间) for jelly for a quick sandwich. Sitting all alone on the far side of the shelf was a small jar of grape jelly, whose lid was
__10__
in places. Written
on it was “GR” for grape and the year when the jelly was made.
As I picked up the jar, I suddenly realized something that I had
__11__
to see earlier. This was the last jar we would ever have from the patient, loving hands. We hardly ever opened a jar of jelly at table without
__12__
about those thousands of little jars she had filled. It seems like such a small thing, and most days it was something that was
__13__
for granted.
No longer was it just a jar of jelly. It was the end of a family
__14__. We expect these hundreds of pictures and many more memories to
__15__
the years and to pass on to our children. The jar of jelly won't keep that long. It will either have to be eaten or thrown out…but not today.

desert. On one of those hot mornings I was picking sweet corn with my dad to fill the last __2__

__4__
quickly. After forty minutes of aimlessly walking in the field, we

needed twenty dozen. I was completely frustrated and

__8__ ,he never gives up.

__9__
Dad remained optimistic. He continued to be grateful for other things like good health and food on our plates.Only then did I truly begin to
__10__
Dad and his faith that guided us through the hard times.

__12__
