[2016·河南八市联考]In the United States, a group called Thread has been helping young people in the community meet their goals for more than 10 years through its volunteers. Thread is based in the eastern city of Baltimore, Maryland. Its volunteers help high school students with almost anything, like learning how to wash their clothes and how to get a job.

Thread, a nonprofit organization, was launched 11 years ago. It was the idea of Sara Hemminger, who was a student at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The school and the hospital are in a poor neighborhood in Baltimore. Ms Hemminger wanted to do something to help young people from poor neighborhoods. She wanted to give poor students in the community the advice and support they needed to succeed in school and in life.

Thread helps connect students who are having difficulty in high school with people who can help them change their lives. Thread says it stays with the students no matter what happens. It never gives up on them.

The relationships between the students and volunteers are planned to last for 10 years. The volunteers give the young people whatever kind of help they need. The group also helps students meet with experts to learn the skills they need to get a summer job or a permanent one.

Kiss was 15 years old when she joined the program three years ago. “When I moved up here. I didn't know a lot of people because I don't have family here. And so when they came into my life, it helped me with everything.”

Kiss must complete one more year of high school before she can go to college. She already knows what she wants to do with her life with their help. She says she wants to be a dentist, and she wants to volunteer at Thread too.

She has been helped by Jesse Cohen, a medical student at Johns Hopkins. He says, “Kiss has taught me a lot about perseverance. She has overcome numerous obstacles to get where she is today, which is really inspiring.”

5.Which of the following about Thread is TRUE according to the text?

  A.It was launched by Thread.

  B.It was created for teachers.

C.It helped young people find jobs and meet their goals.

D.It helped volunteers change lives and build community.

6.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

  A.Teachers at school.

  B.Volunteers from Thread.

  C.Problems of Kiss.

  D.Parents of Kiss.

通过第五段“Kiss was 15 years old when she joined the program three years ago.”可知,Kiss也参加了Thread,下面介绍了她的经历,因此当文章介绍“And so when they came into my life, it helped me with everything.”

7.According to the text, Kiss ________.

  A.has become a good dentist

  B.helps create the group Thread

C.feels lonely because of her study

  D.benefits from the group Thread

根据文章倒数第三段“When I moved up here. I didn't know a lot of people because I don't have family here.”可知,开始来到一个陌生的地方感到人生地不熟,再结合倒数第二段“She already knows what she wants to do with her life with their help.”

8.What can we know from what Jesse Cohen says in the last paragraph?

A.He benefited a lot from volunteering.

  B.He has overcome many difficulties.

C.He got whatever help he needed badly.

D.Saying is one thing but doing is another.

根据最后一段“Kiss has taught me a lot about perseverance. She has overcome numerous obstacles to get where she is today, which is really inspiring.”

  1.goal n. 目标

[2016·衡水中学调研]In modern society, competition is everywhere. No wonder a English philosopher considers competition the source of a series of problem such as frustration and anxiety. Therefore, if we stress cooperation too much, there would be no progress. In my opinion, all are important and necessary.

Let's take the competition at school for example. Even a gifted student won't make a remarkable progress if he is in a class without competition. That's because competition, and rather, challenge is a driving force made him go forward. On the other hand, if we don't cooperate with each other, it's impossible for us learn from each other. And that's why most of the great discoveries or inventions in the modern world are the result of cooperation.

To conclude, those who laugh last are the people who can successful cope with the relationship between competition and cooperation.
