  Passage 1 (2016·福建省闽粤联合体高三联考)

  话题:父母与子女

  词数:296

  My dearest son and daughter,

The story of New Jersey high school student Rachel Canning suing (起诉) her parents for child support and high school education inspired me to write you a little letter.Let me just put this out there: the only way I expect to see you in a court is as a lawyer or a judge.

There are two things about this case that seem to be disaster.

First, its natural for parents and children to argue.I can guarantee that we will disagree. One or both of you will,at some point, scream at the top of your lungs the various ways you hate me.And I wont always like you, either. But I will always love you and do everything I can to keep your best interests as my focus, even when Im so angry. We are family. That means we are as much a part of one another as the flesh, blood and bones in our body. And we all should think about it very deeply instead of breaking that bond.

Second,Ill be honest,no matter how far apart we are on your life choices, your father and I will most certainly pay everything we can for your higher education. But that doesnt mean you deserve it.To be clear, that is a privilege we happily extend (给予) to you—not a right you are born with. And you will have to work hard to earn that privilege.Growing up is hard work.

If I do my job properly as your mother—and you do yours as my children—you would sooner get a job or two,and find a way to make your dreams come true than go to trial over what you think you have the right to.

  Love always,

  Mom

Dave shrugged in response.“I dont see why not.”

Jim looked up at the black mass on the top of the flagpole, the American nag waving proudly beneath him.It was definitely a cat,and he regarded the people gathered below as if they were his subjects (臣民) and he their king, his yellow eyes scanning his surroundings with apparent disinterest.

When it comes to cultural heritage protection, the Grand Canal of China is probably the world’s greatest project of its kind. The big inland waterway system in the north-eastern and central eastern plains passes through eight of the countrys present-day provinces.

The Canal runs from Beijing in the north to Zhejiang Province in the south.Constructed in sections from the 5th century BC onwards, it was designed as a means of communication in the 7th century AD.The Canal is the worlds greatest civil engineering project before the Industrial Revolution.

The Grand Canal reached a peak in the 13th century, providing an inland navigation(航行) network consisting of more than 2,000 kilometers of artificial waterways, linking five of the most important river basins in China, including the Yellow River and the Yangtze. It entered a bid as a UNESCO(联合国教科文组织) cultural heritage site in 2008.

The Grand Canal cultural square is located in Beijings Tongzhou district.Ever since the Yuan dynasty 800 years ago, the Tongzhou section of the Grand Canal has been the life blood of Beijing.Grain and building materials were all transported to meet the endless demands of the big cities.Even today, the Grand Canal plays a major role in the lives of its citizens.

In addition, great numbers of animals were killed by the fires that burned out of control. The fires were driven by high winds, moving as many as ten miles a day. Many small animals died in the flames. The fires rapid advances gave the wildlife little chance to escape.Even today, few of these small forest animals have returned to live in the park.In the years immediately following the fires, the numbers of visitors declined rapidly. No one was interested in seeing a blackened and treeless park on vacation.Yellowstone had previously been famous for its amazing views and unique geological formations such as the geyser Old Faithful. But now its reputation as America’s wonder is damaged permanently.

  话题:蝙蝠

  词数:297

The sun is setting on a summer night. At the entrance of a deep, dark cave,a few bats fly out.Within a few minutes, millions and millions of bats are pouring out of the cave.

Sounds like a scary horror movie? Believe it or not, this scene takes place all summer long,at Bracken Cave in Texas, where 20 million bats come out to feed on insects every

night.“It is magical,”says Jim Kennedy of Bat Conservation International in Texas.“It is one of the most impressive animal movements on the planet.”

Every March or April,Mexican free-tailed bats migrate up to 1,600 kilometers from

their winter home in Mexico to their American home in Texas, where they raise their

young.Soon after they arrive, each mother gives birth to one baby.As many as 500 baby

bats crowd into 30 cubic centimeters of space, and all those bodies create nice warm temperatures to keep them cozy and comfortable.

If you have ever lost sight of your parents in a crowded playground, you may be wondering how mother bats recognize their children. They use their sense of smell to tell which baby is theirs when it is time for the babies to have milk.

When twenty million bats fly out of one cave opening, they make a column so thick

that they show up on the radar at the nearby airport. It can take three hours for all of them

  话题:珍惜家人

  词数:356

We all have our ways of marking time.As a photographer,my life is measured from one story to the next.My oldest son was born in the middle of a long story about the Endangered Species Act.My daughter came along with a pack of gray wolves.

Twenty stories later, though, its the story in Alaska that I’ll remember best.It was the story about the loss of wilderness—and the story during which my wife Kathy got cancer. That’s the one that made time stand still.I stopped taking pictures on the day when she found that tumor (肿瘤).Cruelly,it was Thanksgiving.By Christmas, she had become very weak. Some days she was so sick she couldnt watch TV.

Early examination saves time. But ours was not early.By the time you can feel it yourself, its often bigger than the doctor wants it to be.

Cancer is a thief. It steals time. Our days are already short with worry. Then comes this terrible disease, unfair as storm at harvest time. But cancer also has the power to change us,for good.We learn to simplify, enjoying what we have instead of feeling sorry for what we don’t.Cancer even made me a better father. My work had made me a stranger to my three kids. But now I pay attention to what really matters. This is not a race. This is a new way of life and new way of seeing, all from the cancer.

In the end each of us has so little time.We have less of it than we can possibly imagine. And even though it turns out that Kathy’s cancer has not spread, and her prognosis (诊断) is good,we try to make it all count now, enjoying every part of every day.

Ive picked up my camera again.I watch the sky, searching for beautiful light. When winter storms come,Kathy and I gather our children and take the time to catch snowflakes (雪花) on our tongues. After all, this is good. This is what were living for.

  话题:我的大学

  词数:324

Ever since I started my freshman year in another state, I’ve realized that people make many assumptions about college students, many of which are based on partying.Even my sociology professor jokingly told our class: “If your motto isn’t ‘I am partying therefore I am, you’re collegeing wrong.”

Whenever I say partying isn’t fun, I get the same response: wide-eyed stares, dropped jaws and a resounding “Seriously?”, which makes me feel like Im being judged.

Don’t get me wrong—I’ve tried to enjoy dancing in hot, crowded spaces to loud rap music. But at last, I’ve always escaped to an empty corner while trying to ignore rude, crazy people.I wondered if I was weird for wanting to stay in on a Friday night to read a book.I even questioned whether or not I was living the “authentic(真正的)” college experience.

“Maybe you—a shy boy—just need to go out more.” Friends have said.Suggestions like these make me think about food.Have you ever tasted something that someone else really likes and you don’t? When that happens to me, I have a habit of eating more hoping that it will eventually taste good.Does that ever work? No.

For me, partying is a lot like that. From what I can tell, I’m just not a fan.I’m not trying to set myself apart—I just have a different definition of fun.

As you begin to think about your present college life, I hope this helps you realize that there isn’t just one way to experience college life. Some turn up at a party to relax.I turn to a good book.Which option have you made in college? And remember: college is a place where you can keep yourself originally. It means not going with the flow and means figuring out what you want for yourself, originating your own values and thinking a way towards your future success.

  话题:陪伴孩子

  词数:347

Parents often assume that time spent with their kids will gradually decrease in adolescence. But a new study suggests that while teens try to avoid spending a lot of time together with their parents, private parent-child meetings may actually increase in their early adolescent years. And that may raise a teenagers self-esteem (自尊) an social confidence, especially if it is time spent with Dad, the researchers added.

The researchers created a long-term study in which they invited families in 16 school districts in central Pennsylvania to participate. In each family, a teenager, a younger sibling, their mother and their father were interviewed at home and then asked about their activities and self-worth five times over a period of seven years.

The study authors were surprised to discover that when fathers spent more time alone with their teenagers, the kids reported they felt better about themselves.Something about the father’s role in the family seemed to improve self-esteem among the teenagers in the study, said study author Susan McHale, a professor of human development at Pennsylvania State University.

“Time spent with Dad often involves joking, teasing and other playful interactions.Fathers, as compared to mothers, were more involved in leisure activities and had more friend-like interactions with their children, which is crucial for youth social development,” the study showed.

But Marta Flaum, a psychologist in Chappaqua, New York, said, “How these findings reflect the real world is a real question. The sample in the study is so small and so unrepresentative of more families in the country today that I’m not sure how much we can generalize from it.In my community, in Westchester County, I don’t see parents and teenagers spending much time together at all.Parents are often working so hard and have less time to be together with their kids.”

However,Flaum encourages parents to make time for their kids no matter how much work they have to do.“Research like this reminds us of how important it is.The time we have with them is so short, ” she said.

  话题:370失联

  词数:305

  The British “Daily Telegraph”

Traditionally regarded as one of the safest planes in the skies, the Boeing 777s reputation will have been damaged by the second fatal crash in less than a year. There are around 1,000 Boeing 777s in service, and the plane is a long distance machine, travelling some of the longest routes. It entered service in 1995 and the National Transportation Safety Board, which is responsible for monitoring US-made aircraft, has recorded fewer than 60 incidents.

But the recent record hasnt been exact with two major incidents—a crash at San Francisco airport last July, which causes three lives, and the crash—landing of a British Airways 777 at Heathrow in January 2008.

To our sadness, two days ago, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 lost contact flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The Malaysian disaster is very different from both the BA incident and the crash involving an Asian Airlines flights at San Francisco International Airport in July, which occurred shortly before landing, while the Malaysia airlines plane disappeared off the radar(雷达)during the early stages of the trip.

The accident at San Francisco in July was due to pilot error which led to the engines being set to idle because he believed the computer would maintain sufficient speed to keep the plane up in the air.The BA crash landing, which did not result in any deaths, was finally found to have been caused by a block in the fuel line feeding the engine.

However, the Malaysia airlines plane disappeared off the radar during the early stages of the trip.No exact explanations have been given for the Malaysia airlines plane crash.First reports suggest that Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the 53-year-old Malaysian airlines pilot, was hugely experienced—having joined the carrier in 1981 and with 18,365 hours in the aircraft under his belt.

1.Which of the following is TRUE of the plane crashes?

B.Flight 370 crash must be similar to the BA incident.

C.The experienced pilot of Flight 370 cant have operated wrong.

D.Flight 370 must have been taken control of to a different place.

答案 A [推理判断题。根据最后一段No exact explanations have been given for the Malaysia airlines plane crash.一句,可知答370的失联仍是一个谜。故案选A。]

  3.What you read is________.

  A.a note

  B.a schedule

  C.a review

  D.a news report

  答案 D [推理判断题。根据标题The British “Daily Telegraph”及文章的时效性可知答案D正确。]

Endangered giant pandas are facing a new threat: the loss of their food source, bamboo. In Chinas Qinling Mountains, giant pandas spend most of their day eating bamboo. The plant makes up 99% of the pandas diet, with some pandas eating about 40 pounds of it a day.But Qinlings pandas may soon have to find another food source.A new study causes the loss of most of the region’s bamboo by the end of the century.

A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences studied the effects of climate change on the region’s three main bamboo species. They studied the influence of rising temperatures on the spread and growth of bamboo.Bamboo is sensitive to temperature changes.“Even with a 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit increase in temperature,we found that 80% to 100% of bamboo would be gone by the end of the century,” Liu Jianguo, one of the studys authors said.Shirley Martin, who came from Paris but not involved in the team said that its really a demanding challenge for us to get a desired result.

The Qinling Mountains, located in eastern China, are home to about 270 pandas. That is about 17% of the worlds wild panda population. The panda is one of the world’s most endangered species.

In recent years,China has stepped up efforts to protect pandas. But Liu says the country has yet to consider the long-term efforts of climate change in its conservation planning.Aside from increasing nature reserve areas(保护区)where pandas are protected,Liu wants China to lower its use of fuels that release(释放)greenhouse gases—as should the rest of the world.“ The future of pandas,” he says,“ is in our hands.”

As we all know, schoolwork is important. But parents should realize that the social skills their children learn from natural conversations with each other are as important as schoolwork and the skills they will need in the future work. What’s more important in their work is that their children should have a sound knowledge of physics or the ability to communicate effectively.

As a rule,Chinese parents dont educate their children about the same kind of ambition and confidence as Americans do,nor do they encourage the same level of participation in extra activities.Children are typically advised to study hard and pass exams. They have to spend a lot of time in doing much schoolwork every day.It is a great waste of time to do so.

Now more and more Chinese parents have recognized that they should pay attention to developing the potential of their children.I hope that leaders in Chinese educational circles should take some measures to develop the potential of their children.I am very confident about it.

Genetically modified foods have come under heavy fire lately. There are some countries that are against buying these types of foods. They are being tested for safety by the best scientific experts in Europe, the US and the rest of the world—They are not for sale until they have gone through this complete safety process.Since they are a new product, and any slight problem with them could affect a whole country, these tests are very necessary.

These safety tests are carried out because of the new rules that were made with the Novel Foods Regulation.Begun in May of 1997,the Novel Foods Regulation set up an EU-wide pre-market system for all novel foods.A novel food is described as one that has not been eaten by EU consumers widely in the past.By setting up this program the EU hopes to keep its consumers safe from any possible side effects of any new food products.

There are a variety of ways in which genetic modification has helped food producers. They can improve the nutritional value or the storage conditions of the food.Today there are only two genetically modified foods that have been allowed for use, these are GM soybean and GM maize.

  Passage 7 (2016·东北三省模拟)

  话题:太空披萨

  词数:378

While astronauts in space get to do many exciting things, they miss out on ordinary things that we all take for granted—being able to walk on firm ground, hanging out with family and digging into a slice of hot steaming pizza.Though not much can be done about the first two things, there may soon be a solution to the third one, thanks to this cool 3-D pizza printer!

About a year ago,NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor,a 3-D technology expert,to build a device(设备) that would allow astronauts to make pizza on demand. The mechanical engineer promised that his invention would produce pies in large quantities that looked, tasted and even smelled like pizza made in common ovens.

Late last year, the engineer presented a video of his first prototype(原型)that begins by creating a single slice of dough(面团) that is cooked and printed at the same time. Then comes the tomato “sauce”—a mix of tomato powder, oil and water and finally,a protein slice that resembles cheese. While the video doesn’t show the baking process, the inventor says that once the pizza is printed,it can be ready to be consumed in 7 seconds.

While the pie in the video looks delicious enough to attract any pizza lover,Anjan Contractor is far from ready for astronauts.Thats because he still has to find a solution to make the food container in the printer last for 30 years.Though that may sound unrealistic, actually it is not.

Anjan Contractor believes that the only way that is possible is that the water is removed from all the ingredients(配料)and then they are reduced to the powder form. This,as you can imagine, will not be so easy. But,while the printer may not be ready for space,it certainly looks ready enough for people on earth.Hopefully,NASA and Contractor will consider selling it to those not fortunate enough to go to Mars!

  Passage 10 (2017·潍坊一模)

  话题:鞋与个性

  词数:286

Researchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a strangers personality simply by looking at the person’s shoes.“Shoes convey useful information about their wearers,”the authors wrote in the new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality.

Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone’s shoes. In the study,63 University of Kansas researchers looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the studys participants.Volunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire.

Some of the results were expected:People with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier shoes were typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are strange enough. For example,“practical and functional”shoes were generally worn by more“pleasant”people, while ankle boots were more linked with“aggressive”personalities. The strangest of all may be that those who wore“uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have “calm” personalities. And if you have several pairs of new shoes or take extreme care of them, you may suffer from“attachment anxiety”,spending lots of time worrying about what other people think of your appearance. There was even a political calculation in the mix with more liberal(主张变革的)types wearing“shabbier and less expensive” shoes.

The researchers noted that some people will choose shoe styles to mask their actual personalities, but researchers noted that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were showing the deep side of their personalities.
