  (2017·常州模拟)

There are plenty of creams etc. on the market that help you look younger, but today, Dr Oz is going to show how some people are actually living longer.

“We are going to talk about extreme life extension, ”he says. “I am talking in detail about allowing us to go into our second century of life with the energy that you have when you are a young person. ”

Owing to advances in technology and research on how diet affects the aging process, Dr Oz says it might be possible for some people to live to see their 120th birthday.

There’s one man in Oprah’s audience who Dr Oz says may become the first man in history to live to be 150 years old. Joe Cordell is one of thousands around the world who believe they have found the key to an extreme long life—calorie restriction leads to a longer, healthier life.

At 59 Joe weighs 130 pounds. He may not look like a person who needs to count calories, but as part of his life extension program, he inspects every mouthful of food that passes through his system.

Every day for the past seven years, Joe has limited himself to about 1, 950 calories.

He believes that by eating less and restricting his calorie intake, he will trigger a genetic switch that slows the aging process.

Joe does not remove food from his diet. Instead, the then 52-year-old father fills up on natural fruits, vegetables and lean proteins that are packed with necessary vitamins and nutrients. “Whenever you are thinking about calorie restriction, you should continually think about getting the most nutritional amount per calorie, ”Joe says.

In keeping with this principle, Joe starts every morning with three apples . . . but he only eats the peels. “Most of the fiber is in the peel, and more importantly, most of the nutrients are in the peel, ”he says.

“It is important to eat some nuts with breakfast so that you do take in some fat, some healthy fat, or fish and more vegetables, ”he says.

For lunch, Joe usually eats a large salad, loaded with vegetables. At dinner time, he and his family enjoy lean meat or fish and more vegetables.

When Joe started practicing calorie restriction, he weighed 175 pounds. Since then, he has lost 45 pounds, and he says he hasn’t had a cold in seven years. Though he is in his “golden years”, researchers studying Joe say he has the body of a 20-year-old athlete.

  1. According to Joe, the appropriate fat intake may help.

  A. people lose weight

  B. feel always full

  C. the absorption of the nutrients

  D. people to live longer

  2. What can we learn about Joe since he started the calorie restriction program?

  A. Joe counts the amount of every meal.

  B. Joe has never had a cold.

  C. Joe eats three apples every morning.

  D. Joe has a large salad with vegetables for dinner.

  3. The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 7 can probably be replaced by“”.

  A. turn on

  B. break down

  C. take up

  D. cut off

  4. According to the passage, “extreme life extension” refers to.

  A. living very long even sick

  B. how to make people lead a happy life

  C. living long and having a healthy body

  D. how to arrange our foods every day

  (2017·溧阳模拟)

An Israeli law banning too-skinny models went into effect with the start of 2017. The law, approved last March in Israel, requires models to prove they have maintained a Body Mass Index(BMI)of at least 18. 5 for three months before a fashion show. That means a woman who is 5’8”tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds.

“This law is another step in the war against eating disorders, ”said physician Adatto. “Underweight models, ”he explained, “can no longer serve as role models for innocent young people who copy their false image of being skinny. ”

But some critics in this country say it is misguided, focusing on weight instead of health. They also say the Israeli ban is bound to fail because of the strong power of the fashion industry. “I think it’s an approach that isn’t going to work, ”said eating disorder expert Susan Ice, who worked with an organization which creates a healthy working environment for models.

But Adatto told the reporter that he began to concern the issue after meeting an aspiring model who looked like she needed to be hospitalized. He said, “I realized that only legislation(立法)can change the situation. There was no time to waste; so many girls were dieting to death. ”

However, the efforts to regulate model’s weight in Spain and Italy have not resulted in part because of difficulties in determining reliable methods of measuring weight and health. “

Still, folks including Ice say there’s no denying that images from Hollywood and the fashion industry can be difficult for young women to deal with. “Certainly I don’t believe the modeling industry has caused the rise in eating disorders, but it makes it harder, ”she says. “It’s a difficult recovery environment, worshiping thinness as the beauty ideal. ”

  5. What does BMI in the first paragraph refer to?

  A. A measure of body health based on height and weight.

  B. A worldwide prize for the healthier model.

  C. A new show held by those skinny models.

  D. A kind of medicine to cure eating disorders.

  6. One benefit the new Israeli law may bring is.

  A. to change the working conditions of models

  B. to lower the chance of skinny model’s death

  C. to prevent models from suffering from eating disorders

  D. to provide guidance for women worshiping thinness

  7. In the opinion of the critics, the law won’t succeed because.

  A. it misleads young women to form a bad eating habit

  B. the fashion industry is much too influential

  C. it doesn’t provide a proper approach that can work well

  D. it doesn’t create a healthy working environment for models

  8. According to the passage, the new Israeli law banning skinny models is.

  A. practical

  B. acceptable

  C. reasonable

  D. controversial
