I work in a nursing home and my job is to take care of the elderly.

This year, a very sweet old lady that I cared for, Alice, had gone through a difficult time. She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice. In November, I was finally able to get her back to her “home”.

Alice had thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas Day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized that that happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was coming after Christmas was not enough to make her feel happy. I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!

On Christmas Eve, I gave her a surprise by asking if she would like to go to a candlelight service at church that night.

Instead of taking her to my church, I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were. We got there early and I got her a seat where her friends could see her as they came in. Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her.

The candlelight service was beautiful and Alice got a lot of love from her old and new friends there.

The truth of the story is that I am the one who got the best gift: the smile on Alice's face.

A teenager has published a study suggesting the federal government could save millions of dollars a year in printing costs by switching to a thinner font (字体) that uses less ink.

Suvir Mirchandani, 14, who lives in the Township of O'Hara, said he noticed there were plenty of talks at school about saving paper and he wondered about saving ink. Suvir said on Friday that the idea began when he was in middle school and he noticed that some teachers used heavier fonts for printing. He said he was already interested in graphic (印刷的) design and used a software program to estimate how much ink different fonts used.

He expanded the study to look at potential savings by the federal government, and a new essay on his research was published this month in the Journal of Emerging Investigators, a peerreviewed journal designed for creative middle and high school students. He found that the Office of Management and Budget had already estimated that federal agencies would spend about $1.8 billion in printing for this year and that ink was more expensive than paper on a perpage basis.

In his essay, “A Simple Printing Solution to Aid Deficit Reduction”, Suvir analyzed five documents produced by five U.S. government agencies and estimated how much ink would be used with four fonts: Garamond, Verdana, Times New Roman and Century Gothic. The analysis estimated that using 12point Garamond would save most, about 29 percent in ink costs.

Suvir said his school district looked at the idea but hasn't been able to take the switch. “It didn't really catch on,” he said.“I understand it's hard to make the change.”

5.In Suvir's opinion, how can the federal government save printing costs?

  A. By saving paper.

  B. By printing on both sides of the paper.

  C. By using heavier fonts.

  D. By turning to a thinner font.

6.It can be concluded that Suvir's study is ______.

  A. interesting

  B. popular

  C. worthwhile

  D. unique

7.Which font does Suvir recommend in printing?

  A. Garamond.

  B. Times New Roman.

  C. Verdana.

  D. Century Gothic.

8.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.

  A. Suvir feels regretful that the school district shows no interest in his idea

  B. Suvir is uncertain whether the school district will accept his idea

  C. Suvir believes that the school district will agree with him

  D. Suvir is unhappy that the school district refused him

  Dear Tom,

How are you? I am just writing to tell you I had wonderful time at your place in New York.

I arrived home, safely and sound. I have something to ask for you. I have been looking through my bags for my favorite red shirt, or I can't find it somewhere. I'm sure I might have left it at your place. Could you look around your house for it? By the way, I am planning my parents' wedding anniversary celebration. I had already invited you and your parent. I wonder whether you would like to come to Chicago this time. What do you think of it? Take care of you and write to me soon. Giving my regards to Uncle Bernard and Aunt Norah.

  Love,

  Diana
