The story all began with a simple announcement from the church wall one Sunday morning. LaSalle Street Church’s pastor, Laura Truax, told his 320 regular members that the church had recently received a large $ 1. 6 million profit in a real estate deal (房 地产交易) and that she would set aside that amount by 10 percent to divide among her parishioners (教区居民).Each would get a $500 check to do something positive for someone, and someone could be the parishioners themselves. The money came with no conditions attached; parishioners did not have to provide proof of money spent. It just came with the hope that the money would be used for good.

LaSalle’s congregation (集会)is racially and financially diverse; More than 60 percent of members have advanced degrees while about a third live a paycheck-to-paycheck life. Truax had no idea how her experiment would work. She only hoped that it would make her parishioners a part of the giving process and engage them in the church and in their community. So far, her idea seems to be paying off.

Checks from LaSalle Street Church have been used to fund everything from swall international projects---including a school in the Himalayas, a health clinic in and an irrigation project in Tanzania---to help local families and friends in trouble. One congregant is helping to fund a skateboarding park in Amman, Jordaa, where he lived for many years. Another is using her money to start a scholarship foundation for local kids. Another has used her money to buy winter clothing for the kids at her daughter's school.

  Going green seems to be

a fad (时尚) for a lot

  of people

these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can't really say,

  but for the two of

us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.

On April 22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different green

things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green

beyond the easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task.

With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment.

We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps.

Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyles.

  We

  now

  shop

  at organic (有机的)stores.

We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don't need.

We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of homemade fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished.

Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet.

1.What might be the best title for the passage?

  A. Going Green

  B. Protecting the Planet

  C. Keeping OpenMinded

  D. Celebrating Our Green Year

2.It was difficult for the couple to live a green life for the whole year because

  ________.

  A.

they were expected to follow the green fad

  B. they didn't know how to educate other people

  C. they were unwilling to reduce their energy

  D. they needed to perform unusual green tasks

3.What did the couple do over the course of Our Green Year?

  A. They tried to get out of their ungreen habits.

  B. They ignored others' ungreen behavior.

  C. They chose better chemical cleaners.

  D. They sold their homemade food.

4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

  A. The government will give support to the green project.

  B. The couple may continue their project in the future.

  C. Some people disagree with the couple's green ideas.

  D. Our Green Year is becoming a national campaign.

根据第二段的第二句“This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond the easy things.”

  3.A。 故选A。

“Don't you have any toys you want to share?”

I asked my son Johnson during our community's

  toy drive.

“What about all those things in your closet you haven't used in years?”

  “I don't have anything,”

  he said. “We're

  so poor.”

  We're only “poor” because

we refuse to buy him the cellphone he wants.

At work the next day, one of my students handed me a Christmas gift-a box of chocolates. The woman had been out of work for months!

  “Thank you,

  Joanna,”

  I said.

I hadn't expected a gift - I work at an adult education center, where we deal with people every day who struggle economically. The economic downturn is not new to those who are laid off, without work, and need an education to get ahead or for a sense of pride. When I was hired, my boss told me she tried to keep snacks around the center, because

“You will hear growling bellies here.

They give their food to the children

  before they themselves eat.”

And yet these people, so grateful for a second chance of getting an education, unable to sometimes even afford the gas

  money to come in,

manage to do something for us nearly every week.

  Some bring in food;

others do chores around the center. They give what they are able to give.

When I brought the candies home to share with my family, I told them just how precious each chocolate was if you thought of how much the unemployed woman's family makes a year. Perhaps the way I could help my son understand best was for me to do first.

Immediately, I went to my bookshelf and chose several of my favorite novels to share with the center.

When I had them boxed, I turned to find my son taking a basket of toys he had played with when

  younger.

“I don't want these old things,” he said.

Now the students had not only impacted me, but my family as well. Here I had thought I was the teacher, but Joanna and the rest of the students at the center are the ones teaching me. Because you're never so poor that you have nothing to give.

1、Johnson was unwilling to share his toys at first because ________.

  A. he found his toys too old to share

  B. he liked those toys very much

  C. he couldn't afford to buy more toys

  D. he didn't get a cellphone as a gift

2、The students at the adult education center ________.

  A.

might be in bad economic condition

  B.

are proud of their jobs and income

  C. are laid off for their poor education

  D. are grateful for getting a chance to work

3、What helped Johnson have a better understanding about sharing?

  A. The example of the author's sharing chocolates.

  B. The laidoff woman's sharing chocolates with the author.

  C. The teaching of the author at the center.

  D. The words of the author's boss.

4、What can we learn from the story?

  A.

The poorest person is most generous.

  B.

Some teachers aren't fit for their jobs.

  C. You are never too poor to give.

  D. Sharing is a good way to learn.

A。 根据第四段第一句中的“we deal with people every day who struggle economically”可知,A项正确。

根据文章第三段中的“The woman had been out of work for months!”和文章的最后一句话“Because you're never so poor that you have nothing to give.”
