Top lists are lecturing people on everything from “100 places to visit” to “100 books to read”. Aren't you just tired of being told what to do with your time?

Now you have a list to end all lists!

Take a look at the following two examples from the list of “101 things not to do”:

  Swim with Dolphins(海豚)?

Swimming with dolphins is one of the world's most profitable tourist activities. However, not every dolphin will welcome having their busy, tiring day interrupted by tourists screaming and pushing around them in the water. Worse yet,

when dolphins get too near to the boats loaded with tourists, they could get caught up in ropes and killed by propellers(螺旋桨).

Here's a little secret. Dolphins look like smiling at you, but actually they're just opening their mouths.

Go to See the Mona Lisa?

There must be something about the mysterious(神秘的) smile. The 6 million people who visit the lady in the Louvre every year can't all be wrong, after all. But they can be quite annoying, standing in front of you; holding up their cameras to prevent you from seeing anything. In fact, it is hard for you to see the painting clearly because you have to stay away from it for security reasons. After queuing for hours, many tourists can remain in front of the painting only for 15 seconds at most.

If the mysterious lady in the picture knew her fate, she wouldn't just be smiling, she'd be laughing.

So, still long to see the Mona Lisa? If you want to find out more about the list, read 101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die.

  1. According to the passage, swimming with dolphins ________.

  A. is the world's most popular tourist activity

  B. gives fun to both tourists and dolphins

  C. will make tourists busy and tired

  D. can cause danger to dolphins

  2. What does the author think about going to see Mona Lisa?

  A. It is wrong to go and see the mysterious smile.

  B. It is not as satisfying as expected.

  C. Fifteen seconds in front of the painting is enough.

  D. Queuing for hours is worthwhile.

  3. The list of “101 things not to do” is made most probably because its author ________.

  A. thinks it boring to do the things suggested by other lists

  B. believes other lists are not humorous enough

  C. intends to persuade people to read more lists

D.wants to provide a list different from other lists

  4. What is the main purpose of the passage?

  A. To advertise a book.

  B. To introduce a website.

  C. To comment on popular

  lists.

  D. To recommend tourist activities.

101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die,很明显是一则常见的广告。

Go to See the Mona Lisa的材料中,作者反复论证了go to see the Mona Lisa的诸多弊端,每年大量的游客前往参观,个人不可能有预想的观赏效果。

101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die打广告。 For thousands of years, mankind has produced plants and animals to create more desired and useful plants and animals. For example, modern com has been produced to such a large size that it is no longer able to reproduce without man’s assistance. Modern dairy cows produce too much milk and if they are not often emptied of milk, they could leak, burst, become infected, and possibly die. Besides, most dogs raised by people can not survive in the wild even with special training.

Since natural evolution is extremely slow and mankind’s selective production programs only take a few generations to produce a completely new species, natural evolution has already taken a back seat to mankind’s production programs. In addition, mankind has successfully killed off several species all together. For example, there are no more European wolves in existence and mammoths (猛犸象) probably died out because of mankind. Even certain diseases have been permanently got rid of from the planet, and dozens of other diseases will soon be too. Again, natural evolution did i»t cause most of the destruction during man’s rule of the world.

Currently, scientists are creating new species with desired characteristics in the lab significantly faster than natural evolution creates new species. In a single generation, new species can be created and destroyed by mankind, while natural evolution could take thousands of years to do the same but only accidentally. Scientists are even able to replace defective (有缺陷的) or damaged genes with different genes to attempt to cure genetic defects. This is something that natural evolution could possibly never correct.

Eventually scientists will even be able to improve the quality of people. For example, imagine not only correcting your eyesight with gene treatment, but also ensuring that all of your children do not receive your old genes of poor eyesight too. Scientists will one day be able to improve the memory and intelligence of your children, so that they will do better in school and achieve more in life. Doctors and scientists will be able to customize (订制) babies before they are born just like picking options at a car store.

1.According to the first paragraph,______ .

   A. man-made evolution has improved all species

   B. man-made evolution has weakened some species

C man-made evolution can make up for all natural losses

  D. natural evolution won’t happen without man’s assistance

  2. What does the underlined part “taken a back seat to” in Paragraph 2 mean?

   A. Become powerful assistance to.

  B. Become a huge barrier to.

C Speeded up the process of.

  D. Played a less important role than.

3 What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

   A. Why natural evolution happens so slowly.

   B. The way scientists adopt to have genetic defects repaired.

   C. The advantages of man-made evolution over natural evolution.

   D. How scientists make use of man-made evolution to create new species.

In business, there is a speed difference: It's the difference between how important a firms leaders say speed is to their competitive (竞争的) strategy(策略)and how fast the company actually moves. The difference is important regardless of industry and company size .Companies fearful of losing their competitive advantage spend much time and money looking for ways to pick up the speed.

In our study of 343 businesses, the companies that choose to go, go, go to try to gain an edge ended up with lower sales and operating incomes than those that paused at key moments to make sure they were on the right track, What’s more, the firms that “slowed down to speed up “improved their top and bottom lines, averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher operating incomes over a three-year period.

How did they disobey the laws of business physics, taking more time than competitors yet performing better? They thought differently about what “slower” and “faster” mean. Firms sometimes fail to understand the difference between operation speed (moving quickly )and strategic speed (reducing the time it takes to deliver value ).Simply increasing the speed of production, for example ,may be one way to try to reduce the speed difference .But that often leads to reduced value over time, in the form of lower-quality products and services.

In our study, higher-performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary. They became more open to ideas and discussion. They encouraged new ways of thinking. And they allowed time to look back and learn. By contrast (相比而言), performance suffered at firms that moved fast all the time, paid too much attention to improving efficiency, stuck to tested methods, didn’t develop team spirit among their employees, and had little time thinking about changes.

Strategic speed serves as a kind of leadership. Teams that regularly take time to get things right, rather than plough ahead full bore , are more successful in meeting their business goals . That kind of strategy must come from the top.

  (

) 3. What can we learn from the text?

hospital. One morning, he was having trouble breathing, but continued to silently hold my

hand. I kept forgetting his special request that grandpa wanted me to fetch a New Year card that my late grandmother had given him on their last anniversary together. He used the card as

  a bookmark in his Bible.

I just knew that I had to fetch his much-loved and much-requested gift. Leaving my

grandpa at his bedside, I rushed home. Jumping back into my car with the card in my hand,

was depressed when the car wouldn't start. I quickly ran to the nearest bus stop. As I waited

there, out of breath, I looked in my purse only to find a $20 note and 50 cents in change.

A short while later, a bus appeared. I quickly got on and offered the driver the $20 note To my amazement, he told me

that he had no change and that I had to get off and wait for the next bus. I was horrified.

A few minutes later, another bus came.
