  Lumberjack Art

When people think of an artist, they probably do not imagine a lumberjack(伐木工人) cutting down trees with a chainsaw.Yet many lumberjacks consider themselves to be artists.Instead of patiently working on a large block of hard rock, however, lumberjack artists use chainsaws to carve their masterpieces from wood.

Wooden sculptures(雕塑) created with chainsaws are perfect examples of folk art.Everyday tools are used to create art that focuses on subjects found in nature, such as bears or other forest animals. Not all lumberjacks are artists, but some chainsaw artists have been lumberjacks.

A lumberjack who is also an artist might cut down a tree during a workday. If the stump, the bottom of the tree,is a good size, the artist might be motivated to sculpt the stump into the shape of a forest animal. The chainsaw artist might also carve other large blocks of wood.Sometimes a homeowner might cut down a tree in the yard and then hire a chainsaw artist to create an outdoor sculpture from the stump. So,this art owes its origins to everyday tasks and nature.

The origins of chainsaw art may be humble(不起眼的),but the practice has expanded well beyond turning a stump into a sculpture. In some ways chainsaw artists are like traditional woodcarvers. One artist said that using chainsaws was simply more practical. This person began his work as a traditional woodcarver—that is,he used hand tools to carve the wood into the shapes he wanted. To save time,he began using a chainsaw to remove some parts of the wooden block. This artist realized that the chainsaw not only cut down large pieces of wood quickly, but it also produced a distinctive and beautiful pattern on the wood. These patterns would not be seen in other pieces of art.Eventually, the artist began using the chainsaw for nearly all of his carvings.

However unusual it may seem, chainsaw art is here to stay. The final test of success for any type of art is the enthusiasm and acceptance of the public. The conclusion is:people love watching chainsaw artists work, and people love the sculptures they create.

1.What do we know about chainsaw artists?

  A.They are originally traditional lumberjacks.

B.They introduce a new concept of artists to people.

C.They create masterpieces in woods and forests.

D.They produce their sculptures while cutting down trees.

  答案 B

  2.Chainsaw art

  .

  A.is hard to be spread.

B.is a kind of folk art.

  C.focuses on modern themes.

  D.needs time to be mastered.

  答案 B

解析 细节理解题。由第二段的第一句话“Wooden sculptures(雕塑)created with chainsaws are perfect examples of folk art.”可知选B。

3.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 4?

A.The application of chainsaw in the lumberjack art.

B.The experiences of a chainsaw artist.

C.The procedure for creating a chainsaw sculpture.

D.The origins of the lumberjack art.

We know the famous ones—the Thomas Edisons and the Alexander Graham Bells—but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper (雨刮器)?Shouldn’t we know who they are?

Joan McLean thinks so.In fact,McLean,a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she’s developed a course on the topic. In addition to learning “who” invented “what”,however,McLean also likes her students to learn the answers to the “why” and “how” questions.According to McLean,“When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try.”

Her students agree. One young man with a patent for an unbreakable umbrella is walking proof of McLean’s statement.“If I had not heard the story of the windshield wiper’s invention,” said Tommy Lee,a senior physics major,“I never would have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rainstorm into something so constructive.” Lee is currently negotiating to sell his patent to an umbrella producer.

So,just what is the story behind the windshield wiper?Well,Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights,so she jumped aboard a streetcar.Noticing that the driver was struggling to see through the snow covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why there couldn’t be a builtin device for cleaning the window.Still wondering about this when she returned home to Birmingham,Alabama,Anderson started drafting out solutions. One of her ideas,a lever (操作杆) on the inside of a vehicle that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield wiper.

Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations. It’s hard to imagine driving without Garrett A.Morgan’s traffic light. It’s equally impossible to picture a world without Katherine J.Blodgett’s innovation that makes glass invisible. Can you picture life without clear windows and eyeglasses?

4.By mentioning “traffic light” and “windshield wiper”,the author indicates that countless inventions are

  .

  A.beneficial,because their inventors are famous

B.beneficial, though their inventors are less famous

C.not useful, because their inventors are less famous

D.not useful, though their inventors are famous

  答案 B

解析 推理判断题。由文章最后一段第一句“Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations.”可知信号灯和雨刮器这些小的发明使我们受益。由第一段可知信号灯和雨刮器等的发明者不怎么出名,故选B项。

5.Professor Joan McLean’s course aims to

  .

A.add colour and variety to students’ campus life

B.inform students of the windshield wiper’s invention

C.carry out the requirements by Mountain University

D.prepare students to try their own inventions

  答案 D

解析 细节理解题。由第二段最后一句“When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try.”可知应选D项。

6.Tommy Lee’s invention of the unbreakable umbrella was

  .

A.not eventually accepted by the umbrella producer

B.inspired by the story behind the windshield wiper

C.due to his dream of being caught in a rainstorm

D.not related to Professor Joan McLean’s lectures

  答案 B

解析 细节理解题。由第三段中Tommy Lee的话“If I had not heard the story of the windshield wiper’s invention...I never would have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rainstorm into something so constructive.”可知他的发明是因为受到了雨刮器的发明故事的启发。

7.Which of the following can best serve as the title of this passage?

A.How to Help Students to Sell Their Inventions to Producers?

B.How to Design a Builtin Device for Cleaning the Window?

C.Shouldn’t We Know Who Invented the Windshield Wiper?

D.Shouldn’t We Develop Invention Courses in Universities?

  答案 C

  解析 标题归纳题。全文讲述一些小的发明,虽不为人知,却非常有益,借以鼓励年轻人要善于把握发明的契机,故选C项。其他选项都比较片面。

  Tips for Summer Reading

Summer holds many of my strongest and most powerful reading memories.I remember sitting under a tree in the backyard as a child, reading Anne of Green Gables as the shadows crossed the grass.I remember sitting in the back seat of the car on a long family road trip, sharing joke books with my brother and sister and laughing until we cried.

  8

I want all kids to enjoy the fun of summer reading, because summer reading has secret power.

  9

Here are some ways to motivate kids for summer reading.

Make children the curators(管理人) of their reading lives.

Have students set summer reading goals for themselves.

  10

Students can act as “chief curators” of the blog in turn so that over the course of the summer each of them takes on the responsibility of replying to posts and highlighting a popular title.

  11

Taking “curiosity walks” is a fantastic way to bring informational text into a child’s reading list. These walks also provide opportunities for authentic writing.Have children take an inspiration notebook on a class walk outside and write down anything they see that they would like to learn more about.

Make reading more like summer camp.

Let’s combine reading with handson activities and make reading more like summer camp.We can take field trips to the library and search the shelves for books on a topic chosen out of a hat.

  12

Then they can bring that creation in to share on the first days of school.

A.It will set the stage for academic success.

B.Bring the outdoors back into summer reading.

C.Select some books and share them with your students.

D.Set up a summer blog so you can all share recommendations.

E.These memories became important stepping stones in my life.

F.It is important to build and shape a strong reading life during school months.

G.We can ask our students to create something in response to one of the books they’ve read.

  Reading Matters

  Dear fellow students,

It is reported that the annual average reading amount of per Chinese is less than onetenth of that of some other countries in the world, which causes certain worries among us.How did this come about?

The causes consist of two aspects.Firstly, people’s lack of reading habits explains the main reason, which is the most urgent and difficult thing to change.Secondly,it is obvious that people nowadays care more about material gains than the enrichment of the mind.

It’s high time that we paid attention to developing a good reading habit as it can bring us enormous benefits. For one thing, reading enables us to acquire knowledge and thus broadens our horizons. For another,it provides enough food for thought and improves our practical skills. What’s more, reading enriches our mind and makes it possible for us to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life.

  Thanks for your listening!
