(2016·山东潍坊一模)The poaching,or illegal killing,of rhinos (犀牛) in South Africa is growing worse each year. The government recently reported that a record number of rhinos were poached in 2017,a year which had more rhinos killing in South Africa than ever before.
The World Wildlife Fund,or WWF,says about 20,000 rhinos live in South Africa. That is more than 80 percent of the rhinos in the world.Edna Molewa,South Africa’s Environment Minister, says,“During 2017,we are sad to say this,1,215 rhinos were killed. This is a rise in the number of poached rhinos from 1,004 in 2017 and indeed very worrying.”
The animals are hunted for their horns (角).Many people in Asia believe the horn has curing power, which drives poachers,at all costs, mad for more horns. But there is no scientific evidence for this belief. The horn is made of keratin. That is the same thing as human hair, fingernails and toenails.
Ms.Molewa said 386 suspected poachers were arrested last year,an increase from the year before. But rhino protection workers say poachers often go unpunished after arrest.South Africa’s legal system is ineffective.Ms.Molewa said more needs to be done and South Africa is taking strong measures to protect rhinos. The efforts include moving some of the animals to secret places in neighboring countries.“Now approximately 100 rhinos have been moved to neighboring states in the SADC region during 2017 and 200 more rhinos will be moved this year,”Molewa said.
Jo Shaw, the rhino program manager at the WWF,said,“We’re talking about a loss of a hundred rhinos a month,or more than three a day.We really need to see effective action not just at a national level but internationally.”She says officials should find the criminal groups responsible for the poaching and punish them.Government officials are to meet in Botswana in March at the Intergovernmental Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade.

(2016·淄博市高三模拟考试)The longer a teenager spends using electronic devices such as computers and smartphones, the worse their sleep will be,a study of nearly 10,000 16to 19yearolds suggests.
More than two hours of screen time after school was strongly linked to both delayed and shorter sleep.Almost all the teens from Norway said they used the devices shortly before going to bed. Many said they often got less than five hours sleep a night.
The teens were asked questions about their sleep routine on weekdays and at weekends,as well as how much screen time they clocked up outside school hours. On average, girls said they spent around five and a half hours a day watching TV or using computers, smartphones or other electronic devices. And boys spent slightly more time in front of a screen—around six and a half hours a day,on average.Playing computer games was more popular among the boys, whereas girls were more likely to spend their time chatting online!
Any type of screen use during the day and in the hour before bedtime appeared to disturb sleep—making it more difficult for teenagers to nod_off.And the more hours they spent on these devices, the more disturbed their sleep became. When daytime screen use totalled four or more hours, teens had a 49% greater risk of taking longer than an hour to fall asleep. These teens also tended to get less than five hours of sleep per night.
Dr.Hysing said her findings had suggestions for the wider population as so many people use these devices.“We know that sufficient sleep is essential for good physical and mental health.Logging off may be one important step toward securing a good night’s sleep.”
Prof Russell Foster,an expert at the University of Oxford, said,“This is an important study as it provides practical evidence that the use of electronic devices before bed does indeed reduce sleep duration.”He said teenagers should be warned of this.
【文章大意】 本文是一篇说明文。一项研究发现,青少年花在电子设备上的时间越长,睡眠时间就越短,睡眠质量也越差。因为足够的睡眠对于身心健康都有好处,所以青少年们在睡前应远离电子设备。
5.What is stressed in the first two paragraphs?
A.Teens now tend to have more problems with studies.
B.Teens get harder to fall asleep with more screen time.
C.Teens addicted to screen are likely to be more energetic.
D.Teens’ sleep duration has nothing to do with their screen time.

6.By asking questions,the study finds________.
A.boys are more likely to chat online than girls
B.girls are more frequent on the screen than boys
C.teens are attracted by different electronic devices
D.teens use the screen for the same purpose
解析:选C。细节理解题。根据第三段第二、三句“On average, girls said they spent around five and a half hours a day watching TV or using computers, smartphones or other electronic devices. And boys spent slightly more time in front of a screen—around six and a half hours a day,on average.”可知,青少年使用的电子设备包括电视、电脑、智能手机等,C项正确。
7.What does the phrase “nod off” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A.Shut off. B.Get excited.
