  Part A

At six weeks of age, little Nathan,Mal and their sister who is yet to be named, resemble three kittens purring and napping for the majority of the day.

But by the end of the year,Ben Britton,37,expects his current African lion roommates to weigh up to 40 kilograms each and no longer fit on his couch.

As the director of Wild Animal Encounters in Western Sydney,Mr Britton has taken on the role of the lions’ mother from the day they were born, after their natural mother rejected them.

“They’re sleeping around 20-22 hours a day at the moment so they’re not very active, they only have short bursts of energy when they’re fed which is about four times a day,and then they crash about half an hour after that.”

“Yeah—they have already worked out how to get on the lounge. They just take a little run and jump.”

But as their weight grows by one kilogram a week,it won’t be long before the big cats can no longer find a space on the couch.

Bringing the animals out of their enclosures and into new environments, including his home,is a regularly practiced thing at the Wild Animal Encounters park.

“Animals have got so much going on in the wild—food, shelter, predators, prey and so on.When they come into captivity we supply and delete a lot of that. The mental side in captivity is hard to match,so we try to enrich their lives as much as we can which includes investigating new areas,”Mr Britton said.

1.The three lion kittens live .

A.at the zoo B.in the forest

  C.in Mr Britton’s home D.in the nature

2.Mr Britton takes the responsibility to take care of the lions because .

A.this is his duty B.he likes them very much

C.he takes them as his pets D.their mother rejected them

3.The underlined word “captivity” in the last paragraph has the similar meaning as in the passage.

  A.enclosure

  B.wild

  C.environment

  D.the Wild Animal Encounters park

4.The animals living in the wild have the following advantages except .

  A.doing many things

  B.always getting enough food

  C.their mental side being matched

  D.rich lives

根据第二段中的“...and no longer fit on his couch.”以及倒数第二段中的“Bringing the animals out of their enclosures and into new environments, including his home”可知,三只小狮子生活在布里顿的家里。

根据第三段中的“Mr Britton has taken on the role of the lions’ mother from the day they were born, after their natural mother rejected them”可知,因为三只小狮子的妈妈不愿照料它们,布里顿就承担起了母亲的职责。

划线词后的that即指代上文提到的“so much going in the wild—food, shelter, predators, prey and so on”,结合划线词所在句子可知,这里是指我们为动物提供了食物、栖息地等,同时限制了它们的活动,说明它们是被圈养起来了。

The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter,so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota,Florida,my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”.I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C(维生素C),thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air,I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness.Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets(at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon)filled the weekend, but the best part—particularly to my taste, dulled by months of cold-weather root vegetables—was a 7 am adventure to the Sarasota farmers’ market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call.

The market, which was founded in 1979,sets up its tents every Saturday from 7 am to 1 pm,rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets.Baskets of perfect red strawberries;the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck;and most of all,the tomatoes:amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.

Disappointed by many a broken,vine-ripened(蔓上成熟的)promise,I’ve refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they’re unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in,with uncertainty,on one particular table at the Brown’s Grove Farm’s stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal—and at that moment,I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn’t be experiencing again for months.

Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight,my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown’s Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty,a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where—luckily for me—I was planning to have dinner that very night.Without even seeing the menu,I knew I’d be ordering every tomato on it.

A.They are soft. B.They look nice.

C.They taste great. D.They are juicy.

  C.Eat in a restaurant. D.Buy fresh vegetables.

根据第一段中的“The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter”以及第三段中的“back home in New York...”

根据第一段结尾“a 7 am adventure to the Sarasota farmers’ market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call”可以知道,到当地的农贸市场去买菜,让作者觉得早起是很值得的。

根据第三段中的“No matter how attractive they look in the store...”

  3.delighted。be delighted with为固定搭配,意为“对……感到高兴”。

  5.pushed。由上文“people stepped on your feet”可知,此处需用一般过去时。

  6.hurrying。

  7.where。

  8.choice。

  How to protect your ears

You and your friends are leaving a concert on a Friday night. When you get outside, your ears are ringing. You have to shout to be heard. 1 So no harm done...right?

Not quite.Temporary buzzing may be easy to ignore, but repeated exposure to loud noise will eventually cause serious and irreversible(无法治愈的) hearing loss.A new study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston shows that one in five people between the ages of 12 and 19 are experiencing slight hearing loss, and one in 20 have mild hearing loss. 2

But the good news is that there are plenty of ways you can use to protect your ears from further damage—and still listen to the music you love:

Ask around.Put your earbuds in or your headphones on,and then ask a friend next to you whether or not he or she can hear what you’re listening to. 3 Turn it down.

Buy noise-canceling headphones.A pair of earbuds or headphones that fits comfortably will limit outside noise so that you can hear your music better at lower volumes.

Take breaks. 4 So when listening to music, take your headphones off for 15 or 20 minutes and let your ears enjoy the quiet.

5 You can buy a cheap pair at any drugstore as an easy way to lower volume at concerts—or while playing or practicing your own music—without changing the quality of the sound.

  A.Use earplugs.

B.Keep the volume below 70 percent.

C.If the answer is yes, your music is too loud.

D.But by morning, your hearing is totally back to normal.

E.Like every other part of your body, your ears need rest.

F.Unfortunately, there’s no way to get back hearing you’ve already lost.

G.The exposure to noise is louder and longer than in any previous generation.

2.F 根据下一句中的“But the good news is that there are plenty of ways you can use to protect your ears from further damage”可知,有很多方法可以保护耳朵免受更多伤害,可推知上一句是说没有方法恢复已丢失的听力,故选F项。

5.A 根据下一句中的“You can buy a cheap pair at any drugstore as an easy way to lower volume at concerts”可知,下一段是讲要使用耳塞,A选项作为标题符合语境。故选A项。

I’m Senior Three student.I often stay up lately doing my homework.Above my desk scores of books pile in front of me.Unfinished papers and solved problems are always there, seeming to have no ending.Time are never long enough for a student of Senior Three. How I do every day is to listen to the teachers’ lectures, taking notes and do my homework, which seems to be endless.I hope our teachers will help us getting more knowledges with fewer lectures, exercises and less homework.Only in this way will they have more spare time to enjoy our lives.

  3.第3句:Above→On。

  5.第5句:are→is。

  6.第6句:How→What。

  7.第6句:taking→take。

  8.第7句:getting→get。help sb.(to) do sth.

  10.第8句:they→we。
