Some of the most painful moments I spend as a vet (兽医 ) are those spent with my customers assisting my animal patients from this world to the next. Making this final decision is not easy, and I have often felt powerless to comfort the sorrowful owners.

That was before I met Shane.

I had been called to examine a ten-year-old dog named Belker who had developed a serious health problem. The dog's owner—Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane—were hoping for a miracle (奇迹). But I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia (安乐死) for the old dog in their home. As we made the arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the euthanasia. They felt Shane could leam something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him.

Shane seemed so calm, patting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

A few minutes later, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's death without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a little while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up: "I know why."

Shocked, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next astonished me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "Everybody is born so they can learn how to live a good life: like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

  1. Shane's parents wanted Shane to witness the euthanasia mainly because ____.

  A. they hoped he could gain something from it

  B. they knew he hated to part with Belker

  C. they wanted him to remember Belker forever

  D. they intended him to learn to carry out euthanasia

  2. What can we learn from the third paragraph?

  A. Belker got sick mainly because of lack of care.

  B. There was no hope for Belker to recover but to suffer.

  C. Shane didn't feel sad about Belker's death.

  D. Belker didn't want to live any longer because of the pain.

  3. We can infer from the underlined sentence that____.

  A. words failed the vet when he tried to comfort Belker's family

  B. the vet was familiar with the feelings of Belker's family

  C. the vet would rather not perform the euthanasia

  D. the vet's throat was uncomfortable with Belker's family around

  4. What would the author say about Shane?

  A. He knew little about animal lives.

  B. He felt unexpected about Belker's death.

  C. He had a unique opinion about life.

  D. He was an outgoing and warm-hearted boy.

It’s no secret that many children would be healthier and happier with adoptive parents than with the parents that nature dealt them. That’s especially true of children of children who remain in abusive homes because the law blindly favors biological parents. It’s also true of children who suffer for years in foster homes because of parents who can’t or won’t care for them but refuse to give up custody (监护) rights.

Fourteen-year-old Kimberly Mays fits neither description, but her recent court victoty could eventually help children who do. Kimberly has been the object of an angry custody battle between the man who raised her and her biological parents, with whom she has never lived. A Florida judge ruled that the teenager can remain with the only father she’s ever known and that her biological parents have “no legal right” on her.

The ruling, though it may yet be reversed, sets aside the principle that biology is the primary determinant of parentage. That’s an important development, though not so much in time.

Shorly after birth in December 1978, Kimberly Mays and another baby were mistakenly switched and sent home with the wrong parents. Kimberly’s biological parents, Ernest and Regina Twigg, received a child who died of a heart disease in 1988. Medical tests showed that the child wasn’t the Twiggs’ own daughter, but Kim only was, thus causing a custody battle with Robert Mays. In 1989, the two families agreed that Mr. Mays would continue to have custody with the Twiggs getting visiting rights. Those rights were ended when Mr. Mays decided that Kimberly was being harmed.

The decision to leave Kimberly with Mr. Mays caused people to debate her suit. But the judge made clear that Kimberly did have rights to make a decision on her own behalf. Thus he made clear that she was more than just possession to be handled as adults saw it.

Certainly, the biological link between parent and child is important. But biological parents aren’t alway preferable to adoptive ones, and biological parentage does not have an complete ownership that cancels all the rights of children.

  1. What was first of all considered in the Florida judge’s ruling?

  A. The biological link

  B. The child’s benefits

  C. The true practice

  D. The parents’s feelings.

由第二段 “A Florida judge ruled that the teenager can remain with the only father she’s ever known and that her biological parents have ‘no legal right’ on her.” 由第三段对判决的评论 “The ruling, though it may yet be reversed, sets aside the principle that biology is the primary determinant of parentage. That’s an important development, though not so much in time.”

  2. We can learn from the Kimberly’s case that

  .

  A. children are more than just personal possessions of their parents

  B. the biological link between parent and child should be paid more attention to

  C. foster homes bring children more pain and suffering than care

  D. biological parents shouldn’t demand custody rights after their child is adopted

由倒数第二段最后一句话 “Thus he made clear that she was more than just possession to be handled as adults saw it.”

  3. The Twiggs demanded custody rights to Kimberly because they

  .

  A. found her unhappy in Mr.May’s custody

  B. thought they could treat her nicer

  C. were her biological parents

  D. felt very sorry about their past mistake

由第四段 “Medical tests showed that the child wasn’t the Twiggs’ own daughter, but Kim only was, thus causing a custody battle with Robert Mays.”

  4. Kimberly had been given to Mr.Mays

  .

  A. by complete accident

  B. at his request

  C. out of her parents’s mistakes

  D. for better care

“Shorly after birth in December 1978, Kimberly Mays and another baby were mistakenly switched and sent home with the wrong parents.”

To get an extra 14 years of life, don't smoke, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly and drink alcohol in a proper amount. That is according to a study published this Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine Journal.

After tracking more than 20,000 people aged 45 to 79 years in the United Kingdom from about 1993 to 2007, Kay-Tee Khaw of the University of Cambridge and his colleagues found that people who adopted these four healthy habits lived all average of 14 years longer than those who didn't.

“We've known for a long time that these behaviors are good things to do, but we've not seen this benefit before, ” said Susan Jebb, head of Nutrition and Health at Britain's Medical Research Council.“The benefit was also seen regardless of whether or not people were fat and what social class they came from.”

Study participants(参与者)scored a point each for not smoking, regular physical activity, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and moderate alcohol intake.

Public health experts said they hoped the study would inspire governments to introduce policies helping people to adopt these changes. But because the study only observed people rather than testing specific changes, it would be impossible to conclude that people who suddenly adopted these healthy behaviors would surely gain 14 years.

“We can't say that any person could gain 14 years by doing these things, ”said Dr.Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization.“The 14 years is an average across the population of what's theoretically(理论上地)possible.”

“Most people know that things like a good diet matter and that smoking isn't good for them, ” Susan Jebb said.“We need to work on providing people with much more practical support to help them change.”

  53. Which of the following DOESN'T belong to the four healthy habits?

  A. Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

BDo proper exercise in the morning every day.

CDrinking alcohol in the proper amount every day.

DHaving a cigarette before going to bed every day.

We can learn from the passage that

  .

ASusan Jebb did not take part in the study.

Bthe study observed people as well as tested specific changes.

Cthere's no need for people under 45 to adopt these good habits.

Donly those from first class can benefit from these healthy behaviors.

What can be inferred from the passage?

  A. All the people are well aware of the harm of their bad habits.

BPeople aged 45 to 70 have bad habits in the United Kingdom.

CGovernments should take measures to help people change their bad habits.

DPeople have adopted the four healthy habits after knowing they're good.

What would be the best title for this passage?

  A. Smoking and Drinking Cuts You 14 Years

  B. How to Live a Much Healthier Life

  C. How to Make Your Life Longer Than Others

  D. Healthy Habits May Give Extra 14 Years

The discovery of an ancient giant panda skull has confirmed its bamboo diet dates back more than 2 million years and may have played a key part in its survival.

A Chinese-US research team reports its results today following studies on a fossil skull found in south China’s Cuangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 2001.

The six fossils unearthed in Jinyin Cave are dated between 2.4 and 2 million years ago, according to the report in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, an influential US journal.

Jin Changzhu, of the chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and lead author of the paper, said the smaller fossil skull indicates the giant pandas were about a third smaller than today’s pandas.

Researchers knew the panda reached its maximum size about 500,000 years ago, when it peaked ,and then gradually became smaller.

Jin, a paleontologist (古生物学者) at the Institute of Vertebrate paleontology and Paleoanthropology (古人类学) attached to the CAS, said the size variation was a basic rule of evolution.

“A species tends to grow bigger when it reaches the peak of its population , but becomes smaller when numbers decline,” he said.

The dental remains of the skull, which is the oldest giant panda skull ever found, are similar to today’s pandas, indicating the type of teeth that could munch (津津有味地嚼)mountains of bamboo. A panda can eat up to 40kg of bamboo per day.

Paleoanthropologist Russell Ciochon, the US co-author at the University of lowa, said the panda’s focus on bamboo could have helped it survive all these years.

“Once an animal begins to rely on a common and stable food source, such as bamboo, it tends to evolve a larger body size,” he said. “As individuals of the evolving species grow bigger, they have a better chance not to be eaten by predators (肉食动物) due to their larger body size.”

  1. According to the research of the CAS , there were most pandas in the world

  .

  A. 2 million years ago

  B. between 2.4 and 2 million years ago

  C. 500,000 years ago

  D. Nowadays

第四段提到了CAS,接下来一段提到 “Researchers knew the panda reached its maximum size about 500,000 years ago, when it peaked ...”

  2. The underlined word “variation” in para 6 means

  .

  A. fall

  B. change

  C. increase

  D. decrease

  3. From the passage, we can learn

  .

  A. pandas began to eat bamboo 2 million years ago

  B. a species tends to grow smaller when numbers decline

  C. the giant pandas were about a third the size of today’s pandas

  D. pandas’ bamboo has played an important role in its development

由第七段 ““A species tends to grow bigger when it reaches the peak of its population , but becomes smaller when numbers decline,” 可知,B选项正确。

由第一段 “...its bamboo diet dates back more than 2 million years ...” 可知,A选项与文章细节不符;由第四段 “...the giant pandas were about a third smaller than today’s pandas.”可知,当时的大熊猫比现在的小三分之一,言外之意就是当时的大熊猫的体型是今天大熊猫的体型的三分之二,正确表达应该是“the giant pandas were about two thirds the size of today’s pandas”,故C选项错误。结合第一段 “...its bamboo diet dates back more than 2 million years and may have played a key part in its survival.” 和倒数第二段 “... the panda’s focus on bamboo could have helped it survive all these years.”

4.The passage mainly tells us that

  .

  A. pandas are endangered

  B. pandas had a long history

  C. pandas had bamboo to beat predators

  D. today’s Pandas are similar to the oldest ones

由文章最后一段的总结 “Once an animal begins to rely on a common and stable food source, such as bamboo, it tends to evolve a larger body size,” he said. “As individuals of the evolving species grow bigger, they have a better chance not to be eaten by predators (肉食动物) due to their larger body size.”
