Some people believe that a Robin Hood is at work, others that a wealthy person simply wants to distribute his or her fortune before dying. But the donator who started sending envelopes with cash to deserving causes, accompanied by an article from the local paper, has made a northern German city believe in fairytales(童话).
The first envelope was sent to a victim support group. It contained 10,000 with a cutting from the Braunschweiger Zeitung about how the group supported a woman who was robbed of her handbag; similar plain white anonymous(匿名) envelopes, each containing 10,000, then arrived at a kindergarten and a church.
The envelops keep coming, and so far at least 190, 000 has been distributed. Last month, one of them was sent to the newspaper's own office. It came after a story it published about Tom, a 14yearold boy who was severely disabled in a swimming accident. The receptionist at the Braunschweiger Zeitung opened an anonymous white envelope to find 20 notes of 500 inside, with a copy of the article. The name of the family was underlined.
“I was driving when I heard the news,”Claudia Neumann, the boy's mother, told Der Spiegel magazine.“I had to park on the side of the road; I was speechless.”
The money will be used to make the entrance to their house wheelchairaccessible and for a course of treatment that their insurance company refused to pay for.
“For someone to act so selflessly, for this to happen in such a society in which everyone thinks of himself, was astonishing,” Mrs.Neumann said. Her family wonder whether the donator is a Robin Hood character, taking from banks to give to the needy.
Henning Noske, the editor of the Braunschweiger Zeitung, said:“Maybe it is an old person who is about to die. We just do not know.”However, he has told his reporters not to look for the city's hero, for fear that discovery may stop the donations.

In the UK,most children have their midday meal at school, but in many schools, parents can choose what their children eat.The children can have a school lunch—a hot, cooked meal;or they can take a packed lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
Often parents prepare lunches on_the_basis_of what
their children want.Cathy,a mother of three children, told us,“My children have packed lunches, because they say they hate school dinners.I make 3 packed lunches every morning,so we're like a sandwich bar in our kitchen in the morning.”
However, another mother,Susan, made her choice based on the nutritious(有营养的)value of the food. She said,“My daughter always has school dinners.I think she probably gets healthier food by having a cooked lunch at school than she would if I made sandwiches.”
But how healthy are school dinners?Kaz,a father, wasn't impressed with them.“Fizzy(有泡沫的)drinks were offered and I think there were a lot of chips.” The question of how healthy school food is was brought to Jamie Oliver, who launched a campaign to improve children's nutrition, after spending a year working in a school kitchen. The TV series about the campaign won an award this week.
He was worried about the junk food he saw being served, which included burgers, pizza and chips. He decided to ban the junk, and started cooking good stews (炖菜)and curries for the children instead.
Jamie improved the school dinners in that particular school, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food. Then he put pressure on the government to improve the standards of school food across the country. And it looks as if the changes have begun.

Moresco struggled to make that long walk a few blocks east.He studied acting, turned out for all the cattle calls(试戏通知)—and during the decade of the 1970s made a total of 2 000.“I wasn't a good actor, but I had a driving need to do something different with my life,” he says.
He moved to Hollywood, where he drove a cab and worked as a bartender(酒吧侍者).His father said,“Stop this craziness and get a job; you have a wife and daughter.” But Moresco kept working at his chosen craft.
Then in 1983 his young brother Thomas was murdered in a mob-linked killing.Moresco moved back to his old neighborhood and started writing as a way to explore the pain and the patrimony of Hell's Kitchen.Half-Deserted Streets, based on his brother's killing, opened at a small Off-Broadway theatre in 1988.A Hollywood producer saw it and asked him to work on a screenplay.
His reputation grew, and he got enough assignment to move back to Hollywood.By 2003,he was again out of work and out of cash when he got a call from Paul Haggis,a director who had befriended him,Haggis wanted help writing a film about the country after September 11.The two worked on the writing, but every studio in town turned it down. They kept pitching it.Studio executives, however, thought no one wanted to see a severe, honest vision of race and fear and lives in collision in modern America.
Moresco believed so strongly in the script that he borrowed money, sold his house. He and Haggis kept pushing. At last the writers found an independent film producer who would take a chance, but the upfront money was too little,Moresco delayed his salary.
Crash slipped into the theatres in May 2005,and quietly became both a hit and a critical success. It was nominated for six Academy Awards and won three—Best Picture,Best Film Editing and Best Writing (Original Screenplay) by Paul Haggis and the kid from Hell's Kitchen.
At age 54,Bobby Moresco became an overnight success.“If you have something you want to do in life, don't think about the problems,” he says,“think about other ways to get it done.”

(2015年河北唐山模拟)My
16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.
Still, the firefighter's first words” You need to come up here to the Still water River” made me catch my breath, and his follow-up words gave me relief: “You son is OK.”
When I got to the river, I immediately saw the fire truck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.
I hurried over to him. “You OK?” I asked.
“Yeah,” was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation, I didn't get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his vest.
The story was this; a woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore.
In an age in which the wore “hero” is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who make it through the day, I realized the real thing in my son. The teens are stubborn and self-centred, but that didn't mean they have no desire to do good.
Still shocked by my son's daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him—but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were, “What's for supper?”
I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I half expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day. Watching from the window. I was reminded that still water often runs deep.
Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?
He was an excellent swimmer.
The water of the river is shallow.
He was old enough to swim
The rocks can be of help of there's danger
The underlined part “who tends to play his cards close to his vest” probably means
.
Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kids
Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinks
Anton always has a desire to help others
Anton seldom changes his mind
In the mother's eyes, what her son did was
Dangerous but interesting
B. meaningful but difficult
C. unexpected and courageous
D. awful and absurd
4. What might be the best title for the passage?
A, My Son, My Hero
B. Anton, A Silent Boy
C. A Good Deed
D. A proud Mother
