  1.Which of the following statements is(not) true/correct?

2.Which of the following is not mentioned?

3.All of the following are true except...

  4.According to the passage,when/where/why/how/how/what/which,etc...?

A giant dam was built many years ago to control the Colorado River in the U.S.This dam was built to protect the land and houses around the river.

This huge dam is in the Black Canyon. It is possible to drive a car from one side of the river to the other on a road, which is on the top of the dam. This dam is so big that there is an elevator inside. The elevator goes down forty-four stories from the road to the bottom. There is enough concrete in this dam to build a highway from New York to San Francisco.Thousands of people worked on this dam for five years.

This huge dam was called Boulder Dam when it was finished in 1936.Later it was renamed Hoover Dam in honor of a president of the United States.Hoover Dam,one of the highest dams in the world,is situated between the states of Arizona and Nevada.

  Q:Hoover Dam lies______ .

  A.between Arizona and Nevada

  B.in the Black Canyon

C.between New York and San Francisco

  D.both A and B

Invited by Mr.Ye Huixian, host of the well-received TV programme“Stars Tonight”,Miss Luo Lin,Miss Asia of 1991,appeared as the guest hostess on the Shanghai TV screen last Sunday.

Born in Shanghai and taken to Hongkong when she was only six years old,Luo Lin has never dreamed of being Miss Asia. Her childhood dream was to be an air hostess. Before she took part in the competition, she had been an airhostess in Cathay Airline for seven years. However, it still took her three months to learn the art of walking on the stage,dancing,singing,making-up and other proper manners, designed by the Asia TV Station.

“It’s really a hard job for me.I won’t enter for such competition any more.Anyhow,I am quite lucky.I am also glad to have had more chance to work for the social welfare since I won the title. This time,in Shanghai,I’d love to make a deep impression on my TV audience,”said Luo Lin with a sweet smile.

Q:Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Luo Lin is a native of Shanghai.

B.Luo Lin moved to Hongkong with her parents.

C.Luo Lin won the title of Miss Asia in 1991.

D.Asia TV Station helped Luo Lin to become Miss Asia.

【解析】A、C和D项都可在原文找到答案,而B项原文所给的是:taken to Hongkong可判断不是moved to Hongkong with her parents,因此选B。

If you register both the VIEW qualification course and the Forum at the same time, you will save_______ .

  A.$100

  B.$300

  C.$350

  D.$400

  1.短文的标题(title,headline);

  2.短文或段落的主题(subject);

  3.中心思想(main idea);

1.What would be the best title for the text?

2.What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?

3.What is the passage mainly about?

4.The main purpose of announcing the above events is__________.

1.We can infer from the Passage that__________.

2.What can be inferred from the Passage?

3.Which of the following can be inferred from the Passage?

4.It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that__________.

5.The author suggests in this paragraph that__________.

  6.The writer implies that__________.

  7.It can be inferred that__________.

10.From the text we can conclude that__________.

  11.After reading the Passage

  we may conclude that__________.

12.What conclusion can be drawn from the Passage?

13.The author is inclined to think that__________.

14.When the writer talks about, what he really means is that__________.

  15.What’s the writer’s attitude/feeling towards...?

  16.In the writer’s opinion,...

According to the passage...,It can be inferred from the passage that...;It can be concluded from the passage that... It can be inferred from the passage that...;It can be concluded from the passage that...

1.The word “...”in Line...means/can be replaced by...

2.As used in the passage, the phrase “...”suggests...

  3.From the passage,we can infer that the word/phrase “...” is/referred to...

4.The word “...” is closest in meaning to...

Annealing is a way of making metal softer by heating it and then letting it cool very slowly.

It will be very hard but also very brittle—that is,it will break easily.

The herdsman, who looks after sheep, earns about 650 yuan a year.

They traveled a long way and at last got to a castle,a large building in old times.

同位语部分a large building in old times 给出了 castle 的确切词义,即“城堡”。

We are on the night shift—from midnight to 8 a.m.—this week.

She is usually prompt for all her class, but today she arrived in the middle of her first class.

Perhaps,we can see some possibilities for next fifty years. But the next hundred?

The lack of movement caused the muscles to weaken.Sometimes the weakness was permanent. So the player could never play the sport again.

There are many places to go on safari(观赏野生动物)in Africa, but riding a horse through the flooded waters of Botswana's Okavango Delta must rank as one of the world's most exciting wildlife journeys.

Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure, providing unique rides twice a day to explore deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, professional guides and lots of support workers. They have a reputation for providing a great riding experience.

The morning ride, when the guides take you to beautiful, shallow lakes full of water lilies, tends to be more active. It is unlike any other riding experience. With rainbows forming in the splashing water around you and the sound of huge drops of water bouncing off your body and face. It is truly exciting. You are very likely to come across large wild animals, too. On horseback it is possible to get quite close to elephants, giraffes and many other animals. The sense of excitement and tension levels rise suddenly though, as does your heart rate, as you move closer to them.

In the evening, rides are usually at a more relaxed and unhurried pace. With golden light streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink. Sedate though they are, rides at this time of day are still very impressive. As the sun's rays pass through the dust kicked up by the horses, the romance of Africa comes to life.

Back at the camp you can kick off your boots and enjoy excellent food and wine. Looking back on your day, you will find it hard to deny that a horseback Safari is as close as you will ever come to answering the call of the wild.

The Curse of the Were-Rabbit(2005) is the first full-length feature film made by directors Nick Park and Steve Box with their amazing plasticine(粘土) characters Wallace and Gromit. It won an Oscar in 2006, and if you watch it, you’ll understand why. It’s an absolutely brilliant cartoon comedy.

Cheese-loving inventor Wallace and his brainy dog Gromit have started a company to protect the town’s vegetables from hungry rabbits. However, just before the annual Giant Vegetable Competition, an enormous rabbit begins terrorising the town. It is attacking all the vegetables and destroying everything in its path. The competition organizer, Lady Tottington, hires Wallace and Gromit to catch the monster alive. But they will have to find the were-rabbit before gun-crazy hunter Victor Quartermaine who is desperate to kill it.

The screenplay is witty and full of amusing visual jokes. As usual, the voice of Peter Sallis is absolutely perfect for the role of Wallace, and Gromit is so beautifully brought to life, he can express a huge range of emotions without saying a word. And both Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays the part of Lady Tottington, and Ralph Fiennes as Victor are really funny.

To sum up, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is an amazing film which is suitable for both children and adults. If you liked Wallace and Gromit’s previous adventures and you appreciate the British sense of humour, you’ll love this film. Don’t miss it!

Here is some must-know information from a handbook on how people behave in doing business in some countries.

  In Brazil

Brazilians are warm and friendly. They often stand close when talking and it is common for them to touch the person on the shoulder. People often greet each other (particularly women) with light cheek kisses. Schedules tend to be flexible, with business meetings sometimes starting later than planned. But to be safe, be on time. Meals can stretch for hours—there’s no such thing as rushing a meal in Brazil. Lunches also can start in the mid to late afternoon. Brazilians are social, preferring face-to-face communication over mails or phone calls.

  In Singapore

Singaporeans shake hands when they meet and often also greet each other with a small, polite bow. Business cards should be offered and received with two hands. Arriving late is considered disrespectful. So be on time. Efficiency(效率) is the goal, so meetings and dealings often are fast-paced. Singaporeans are direct in their discussions, even when the subject is about money. Rank is important and authority is respected. This determines both people interact in meetings. For example, people avoid disagreeing outright with someone with a higher rank.

  In the United Arab Emirates

In the UAE, status is important, so the most senior or oldest should be greeted first with their titles. The handshake seems to be longer than elsewhere. So, do not pull away the handshake. Women should cover themselves when it comes to dress. Men also tend to be covered from neck to elbows(肘部) and down to the knees. People do not avoid entertaining in their homes, but they also hold business meals at restaurants. Touching or passing food or eating with your left hand is to be avoided. When meetings are one-to-one, if your host offers you coffee, you should refuse. It might seem odd, but it is a cultural tradition. Coffee should only be accepted if it is always set out or presented.

  In Switzerland

The Swiss tend to be formal and address each other by last name. They also are respectful of private lives. You should be careful not to ask about personal topics. Punctuality (守时) is vital, something that comes from a deep respect for others’ time. Arrive at any meeting or event a few minutes early to be safe. They also have clear structure in their companies. Higher-ups make the final decisions, even if others might disagree. Neat, clean dress is expected. The Swiss follow formal table manners. They also keep their hands visible at the table and their elbows off the table. It is polite to finish the food on your plate.

The passage is mainly about ________.

  A. communication types

  B. the workplace atmosphere

  C. customs and social manners

  D. living conditions and standards

Why do Singaporeans avoid arguing with their boss?

  A. They put efficiency in the first place.

  B. They dislike face-to-face communication.

  C. They want to finish meetings as quickly as possible.

  D. They are supposed to obey the person of a higher rank.

In the UAE, when should you refuse the coffee if it is offered?

  A. When greeting seniors.

  B. When meeting the host alone.

  C. When attending a presentation.

  D.When dining with business partners.

. In which country do people care about where to put their hands at the dinner table?

  A. In Brazil.

  B. In Singapore.

  C. In the United Arab Emirate.

  D. In Switzerland.

It tells of Freedom, Success, and of the Architecture of big American cities. Because that is where it started: in the second half of the 19th century!

Welcome to a new Era of Kitchen Interior Design

Back then, a Generation of successful American Entrepreneurs dreamt of a new style of Architecture to express their personal wealth. This dream was realized by young architects such as Daniel Burnham and Stanford White. They all had studied at the E'cole des BeauxArts in Paris. And they created a new style for Architecture and Interior Design, named after the famous French Art Institute: BeauxArts.t a new style at all, but a composition of styles from different periods and cultures. Many worldfamous structures such as the Chicago Art Institute and the Statue of Liberty account for it. But what does that have to do with your kitchen? Just as much as you want it to. Because in the same way that the anticonventional architects back then took the freedom to combine elements from different historical eras, today, you too can break the conventional rules of style and create something new: your own personal composition of your kitchen. For that, SieMatic BeauxArts offers unique opportunities: A broad range of seemingly conflicting features that you combine to a harmonious design of your own. You can choose from menu of various forms, appealing colours, and precious materials, to create an environment that is much more than just a kitchen: a reflection of your personality.

Why did the BeauxArts style attract American entrepreneurs?

If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do Yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a distance or time challenge.

  No pain, no gain

Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. The editor of the new Cool Camping Britain guide chooses some of his favorite new finds in England, Wales and Scotland.

Cleadale, Isle of Eigg, Inner Hebrides

Is this Britain’s most beautiful campsite? From the grassy point looking seaward to the mountains, it’s not hard for campers to see how the island inspired The Lord of the Rings author’s fantasy landscapes. The campsite itself is as wild and wonderful as its setting.

Open April — September, from £5 per tent per night.

  Swattesfield, Thornham Magna, Suffolk

Deep in the wilds of north Suffolk, this seven-acre campsite has only been open for a few years, with two fields separated by a lake and surrounded by woodland. The position is perfect. It’s a great place to do nothing

Open Easter — October, from £10 per tent per night.

Pleasant Streams Farm, near St Austell, Cornwall

This site, by a lake, is all about simple pleasures. Located in the former mining village, it has a summerhouse(凉亭)with books and games for a rainy day. There are many animals including pigs, hens, goats and ducks on the farm and a pub just a 10- minute stroll away. There’s very little to do here, no bells and no whistles. Campfires are encouraged.

Open Easter — September, from £10 per tent per night.

Troytown Campsite, St Agnes, Isles of Sciily

Its only campsite, Troytown, couldn’t be in a more remote position. Isolation is its greatest advantage — so bring plenty of books to read and don’t expect a phone signal. But at least one of life’s necessities is available. Lying on the hillside overlooking the bay and near the island of the Gugh, it might just win the prize for best beer garden view in England.

  Tayka Hotel de Sal

  Where: Tahua, Bolivia

  How much: About $ 95 a night

Why it's cool: You've stayed at hotels made of brick or wood, but salt? That's something few can claim. Tayka Hotel de Sal is made totally of salt-including the beds (though you'll sleep on regular mattresses and blankets). The hotel sits on the Salar de Uyuni, a prehistoric dried-up lake which is

the world's biggest salt flat. Builders use the salt from the 4,633-square-mile flat to make the bricks, and glue them together with a paste (糊) of wet salt that hardens when it dries. When rain starts to dissolve the hotel, the owners just mix up more salt paste to

  strengthen the bricks.

  Green Magic Nature Resort

  Where: Vythiri, India

  How much: About $ 240 a night

  Why it's cool:

Taking a pulley(滑轮)-operated lift 86 feet to your treetop room is just the start of your adventure. As you look out of your open window-there is no glass!

-you watch monkeys and birds in the rain forest canopy(罩篷). Later you might test your fear of heights by crossing the handmade rope bridge to the main part of the hotel, or just sit on your bamboo bed and read. You don't even have to come down for breakfast-the hotel will send it up on the pulley-drawn “elevator" .

  Dog Bark Park Inn B&B

  Where: Cottonwood, Idaho

  How much: $ 92 a night

Why it's cool: This doghouse isn't just for the family pet. Sweet Willy is a 30-foot-tall dog with guest rooms in his belly. Climb the wooden stairs beside his hind leg to enter the door in his side. You can relax in the main bedroom, go up a few steps of the loft(阁楼) in Willy's head, or hang out inside his nose. Although you have a full private bathroom in your quarters, there is also a toilet in the 12-foot-tall fire hydrant(消防栓)

  outside.

  Gamirasu Cave Hotel

  Where: Ayvali, Turkey

  How much: Between $ 130 and $ 450 a night

Why it's cool: This is caveman cool! Experience what it was like 5,000 years ago, when people lived in these mountain caves formed by volcanic ash. But your stay will be much more modern. Bathrooms and electricity provide what you expect from a modern hotel, and the white volcanic ash, called tufa, keeps the rooms cool in summer. (Don't worry-there is heat in winter. )

How can we reduce the risk?

There are four general approaches to dealing with volcanic(火山似的) dangers. We can try to keep the danger from occurring-often an impossible task. We can try to change its path or reduce its impact on existing development. We can take steps to protect future development. We can also do our best to have disaster response plans in place before they are needed.

  Removing the Threat

Clearly, there is no way to stop an eruption. We can, however, attempt to reduce the eruption’s effects by strengthening structures, for example, building protective works such as walls to make lava(熔岩) flow away from developed areas. Such efforts can be and have been successful, but are of limited use in a large-scale(范围)eruption.

  Planning for the Future

Protecting future development from volcanic dangers is a simple task. Before building houses, we should judge the risk. If the risk seems too great, a safer location should be found. This type of planning is very effective, but all too often, people are drawn to the lush(葱郁的),rolling land of a quiet volcano.

  Disaster Preparedness(预案)

When a volcano comes to life, a few weeks may not be enough time to avoid a tragedy. Planning is the key to saving lives. Well before the warning signs occur, people must be educated about volcanic dangers. Escape plans must be in place. Communication between scientists, officials, the media, and the general public should be practiced. Emergency measures must be thought out and agreed upon.

If you doubt the importance of these efforts, take another look at past volcanic tragedies, such as the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz. Communication failures left the town of Armero unprepared for escape. When a deadly mudflow came down the slope(斜坡), 21,000 people--90 percent of the town’s people--died.

  25. The passage is intended for ________.

  A. the general public

  B. architects

  C. adventurers

  D. geographers

  26.

When building houses , people tend to ________.

  A. judge volcanic dangers carefully

  B. take volcanic dangers seriously

  C. like to live near a quiet volcano

  D. find a safer place far away from a volcano

  27.

The writer mentioned Nevado del Ruiz to prove ________.

  A. The failure to keep volcanic dangers from happening

  B. The importance of preparing for a volcanic eruption

  C. The bravery of the people in Armero Town

  D. The uncertainty of volcano’s damage

  28. The passage is mainly about ________.

  A. why volcanoes can erupt suddenly

  B. who can predict the eruption of volcanoes

  C. where the volcanoes are most active

  D. how we can reduce the risk of volcanoes

  Skydive Greene County

Come out and let us teach you how to skydive today! We are located in Xenia, Ohio and is within a reasonable driving distance of major cities in Ohio. Situated on a private airport, Skydive Greene County offers world-class training. We didn’t start skydiving but we are Ohio’s oldest skydiving school which opened in 1961!

  Tandem Skydiving

Tandem skydiving is required if this is your first time skydiving. After filling out paperwork and watching a short video, you will be ready to make your skydive. Somewhere around 11,500 feet you will be secured to your tandem instructor. The door will open and you exit the plane.

Your freefall with your instructor will last for approximately 40-50 seconds. We can almost guarantee this will be the most exciting minute of your life as you reach the speed of around 120 mph, falling for about two miles back to the earth!

Don’t forget to have a video taken of your skydive to show all those that didn’t think you would jump from an airplane!

  Static Line Courses

Once you have made your tandem skydiving, you can move on to our Static Line Program. The Static Line Jump is the traditional way to learn to skydive. We have classes throughout the year. Every student will be led through the entire day by a licensed instructor. Never does the student feel unattended.

Once training is over, students will make their first jump on that very same day! If the weather does not cooperate, you can come back the next day, or we will re-schedule a time to make your skydive.

  Price

  $165.00 Tandem skydiving only

  $175.00 Static Line Course only

Invite one of our professional videographers on your skydive:

  My Left Foot (1989)

Imagine being a prisoner of your own body, unable to make any movements except to move your left foot. The main character in My Left Foot, based on the real story of cerebral palsy (大脑性麻痹) sufferer Christy Brown, can barely move his mouth to speak, but by controlling his left foot, he’s able to express himself as an artist and poet. For his moving performance of Brown, Daniel Lewis won his first Academy Award for best actor.

  Shine (1996)

Do you have a talent you’re afraid to share with the world? David Helfgott seemed meant from childhood to be “one of the truly great pianists,” but the pressures of performing (and pleasing his father) resulted in a complete breakdown. Ten years in a mental institution didn?t weaken Helfgott?s musical gift: When he was rediscovered, he was playing concertos in a bar. Shine received seven Oscar nominations (提名), and Geoffrey Rush won best actor for his performance of Helfgott.

  Life Is Beautiful (1997)

Nothing’s more powerful than the love between a parent and a child. In this heartbreaking Italian film, a father (Roberto Benigni) makes an unbelievable sacrifice for his 4-year-old son: trapped in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945, the Jewish man convinces his boy that they are playing a complicated game. He manages to spare him the horror of the terrible war, and even in his final moments of life, keeps his son smiling and hopeful. Benigni won the best actor Oscar.

  Stand and Deliver (1988)

Few people can inspire us more than a good teacher. Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos got Oscar nomination for best actor) is a great one. Employed at a high school where kids are expected to fail, Escalante challenges his math students to struggle for better things, like getting good grades in the AP exam. Despite the obstacles in their lives, the classmates accomplish their goals, thanks to Mr. Escalante’s support. The real Jaime Escalante, the Best Teacher in America, says that Stand and Deliver is ?90% truth, 10% drama.”

The Internet of Things (IOT) aims to get everything and everyone talking. Attaching sensors to “things”, such as cows, cars and refrigerator, and then assigning them unique IP addresses allow them to “talk” to the Internet. Of course, the IoT will involve much more than a handful of sensors. Networking company Cisco estimates that 50 billion Internet-connected devices and objects will

be sending over data by 2020.

  Specific Benefits

The IoT will allow people to track things and processes like never before. Airplane manufacturers will be able to continuously track the condition of airplane parts, allowing them to do preventive maintenance and avoid costly downtime. Consumers could install smart meters in their homes to monitor energy usage and observe energy price changes in real time. That would allow people to adjust their habits and use electrical appliances during lower-priced hours.

  Some Fears

Some critics fear that the IoT could end up being a fashion that people lose interest in over time. Having Twitter feeds on refrigerator doors may sound cool at first, but the attraction could fade as quickly as the excitement over last year’s smartphone! Other critics are doubtful that companies making Internet-connected appliances will provide long-term software updates. If that happens, a refrigerator or washing machine that should last 10 years or more could last two or three due to software that’s outdated.

  A Positive Example

Early this year, owners of the Tesla Model S electric car received a recall notice alerting them to a charger plug needing to be fixed. Amazingly, owners of the Model S sat back while the company performed an “over the air” wireless update. Customers confirmed the update by tapping on the car’s touchscreen console to see that the Model S was running the latest software version. No trip to the dealer was required!

Perhaps Tesla’s remote fix is a sign of things to come. Someday soon, people’s lives might become a lot more efficient and convenient thanks to the IoT.

. How do researchers get everything and everyone talking?

  A. By establishing the IoT and launching a handful of sensors.

  B. By connecting sensors with them and appointing them unique IP addresses.

  C. By communicating with them all the time through the IoT.

  D. By sending people to track them day and night and collect useful data.

. According to the article, which of the following is NOT TRUE?

  A. IoT can help people do preventive maintenance and save money.

  B. IoT can help people monitor energy usage and observe price changes timely.

  C. IoT can help people adjust their habits and use electrical appliances more smartly.

  D. IoT can help people investigate things and update a lot of important data.

. What else do critics worry about the IoT besides its probably ending up being a fashion?

  A. People will lose interest in it as quickly as the thrill over last year’s smartphone.

  B. Refrigerators and washing machines will be replaced by other devices in a few years.

  C. Whether related companies will provide long-term software updates or not.

  D. The software provided by companies will be outdated easily and quickly.

. According to the passage, when owners of the Tesla Model S electric received a recall notice, they ______.

  A. just waited in the car while the maintenance is being done through wireless update

  B. were required to go to the nearest 4s store to make some adjustments or repairs

  C. could definitely depend on the IoT to send them the charger plug to be fixed

  D. had to confirm the update with the help of the equipment provided by the company

  D. Penguins have to wrestle with problems in District 13.

The similarity that exists in the four films is that ________.

  A. each of them is a branch of film series

  C. they all have the best actors and actresses in the world

  D. the four films all have something to do with exploration

Are you looking for something to do? You might like to try one of these four experiences.

  Crocodile watching

Do you fancy getting up close to some of the most terrifying animals on earth? Crocosaurus Cove, in Darwin (Australia) has the “Cage of Death”. This gives you a 360-degree view of a crocodile as it’s being fed. Apparently, the cable broke once and the cage sank to the bottom, but they’ve fixed it since then.

  Edge Walk

How about walking along the edge of a building several hundred meters up in the air? If that sounds fun, head off to the CN Tower in Toronto (Ontario, Canada). Built in 1976, the tower is 553.33 meters tall.

The Edge walk consists of a 20-30 minute stroll (散步) along a 1.5-metre-wide platform that runs around the tower’s restaurant roof.

  Plastic-ball rolling

Do you fancy rolling down a hill in a plastic ball?

Plastic-ball rolling is popular all over the world, but the place to give it a go is in Rotorua (New Zealand). Brothers David and Andrew Akers came up with the idea in New Zealand in 1994. A typical ball is about 3 meters in diameter, with an inner ball the size of about 2 meters.

  Volcano bungee jumping (蹦极跳)

If you’re looking for the adventure in your lifetime, how about going bungee jumping off a helicopter into the crater (火山口) of a live volcano? As part of the jumping, a helicopter ride takes you to the Villarrica volcano. Once you’re at the drop zone, you leap off the helicopter and fall into the volcano.

Attracted by the above? If so, please contact us. Only half price from June 22nd to July 25th. For more information, please click here: http://zorbingsa.com.

Eight in 10 Americans eat fast food at least once a month and half eat it every week according, to a Gallup Poll. Yet most people who eat fast food know it’s bad for them. So why do they keep eating it?

The answer is simple: the benefits of eating fast food outweigh the long-term implications for most people. However, once you read these reasons why all those trips to the drive through may be slowly killing you, you may just want to stop eating fast food after all.

  1. Fast food makes you fat.

A 15-year study of over 3,000 people found that eating fast food is linked to weight gain and insulin resistance. In others words, fast food makes you fat and increases your risk of type 2 diabetes. You probably know this already. But here’s something you may not know.

  2. Fast food is addictive.

The more you eat fast food, the more you crave it. One study found that fast food is “a potentially addictive substance that is most likely to create dependence in vulnerable populations.” If you eat fast food once a week or more, you may be addicted to it.

  3. Fast food is affecting your kids.

According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Kids have an amazing ability to recall ads they’ve seen. Fast food marketers know this, and design ads accordingly. Research shows strong associations between increases in advertising for non-nutritious foods and rates of childhood obesity.

  4. Fast food “burgers” don’t have much burger in them.

One study found that most fast food burgers are composed of about 50 percent water and the actual meat content is only 2.1 to 14.8 percent. So what makes up the rest of it, you ask? Chemical fillers and preservatives, mostly. That’s why we see read horror stories about burgers that don’t go bad.

  5. Even “healthy” fast food isn’t that healthy.

Fast food restaurants are catering to consumer demands to produce healthier options. The problem is, their definition of “healthy” is quite lax. One of the healthiest dishes at Burger King, the Garden Fresh Salad Chicken Caesar with TENDERGRILL Chicken and dressing, still has almost 500 calories and 28 grams of fat, and nearly a day’s worth of sodium.

  6. Fast food is inhumane to animals.

Okay, this one may not be a reason why fast is killing you, but it’s still a compelling reason to stop eating fast food. 9 billion animals were slaughtered in the US alone in 2017 and much of that meat is for your fast food burgers and chicken sandwiches. Large factory farms resemble more of a “business” than a “farm.” Animals suffer in crowded spaces where they rarely have access to the outdoors or sunlight. They are pumped full of antibiotics to combat disease, which runs rampant in these conditions. Livestock is one of the biggest sources of pollution and environmental negligence, according to the UN.

  7. Fast food sodas are loaded with sugar.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is the cheap sweetener most fast food restaurants use in their sodas, desserts, and many other products. Princeton University researchers linked HFCS consumption to obesity in an animal study. Rats given HFCS gained more weight and body fat than those given table sugar.

  56. How many factors are mentioned which can account for the reason why fast food is slowly killing you?

  A. Seven.

  B. Three.

  C. Four.

  D. Five.

57.According to the text, we know that_____.

  A. many people keep eating fast food because they know nothing about the harm which fast food will bring them

  B. fast food plays a key role in children’s growth

  C. eating fast food is connected to weight gain and insulin resistance.

  D. many fast food restaurants are can offer a good and healthy meal to consumer

【】Forbes asked a panel of architects and campus designers to nominate their picks for the best-looking campuses in the world. These are their top choices.

  Kenyon College Gambier, Ohio, US

Mike Evans, a principal at Norfolk, Va., design firm Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company, says to be beautiful a campus must have a “signature campus space as a carrier of the campus brand.” At Kenyon College, that space is “Middle Path,” a 10-foot-wide footpath that serves as the Gothic hilltop campus’ central artery. More than just a trail, it’s a village green for the tight-knit campus community. Sergei Lobanov-Rostovsky, who teaches 17th-century poetry at Kenyon, says the college, both isolated and pastoral, is “a small place to think big thoughts.”

  Oxford University Oxford, England

Teaching within Oxford’s stone walls dates as far back as the 11th century, and the school is considered a paradigm(典范) for all college campuses. With its labyrinth of quads, cloisters, and archways, it evokes elegance and tradition at every turn. “Its monastic roots and the spectacular quality of its buildings make it an architectural wonderland,” says David Mayernik, associate professor at Notre Dame’s School of Architecture.

  Princeton University

  Princeton, N.J., US

Princeton’s style is pure Collegiate Gothic(学院派哥特式; most of it executed in gray stone covered in, yes, ivy. As imposing as these old stone structures are, the campus keeps life on a “human scale” by preserving green spaces and walkability.Sinuous footpaths, archways, plazas – all are designed to inspire spontaneous discussion and learning.

  Scripps College

  Claremont, Calif., US

The total plan of this women’s college, founded in the 1920′s, has always called for artistic connection between buildings and landscape. Together, architect Gordon Kaufmann, in collaboration with landscape architect Edward Huntsman-Trout, created a distinctively Southern Californian blend of Mission Revival-inspired architecture and landscape, which is lovely, evocative and intact. An expert in deciduous trees, Trout planted rows of liquid amber trees to give the students “a sense of autumn” come fall. He also peppered the campus with tulip trees, sycamores, almond and orange trees, as well as rare shrubs.

  Stanford University

  Palo Alto, Calif., US

New additions like the Science and Engineering Quad manage to gracefully blend modern and technological elements with the timeless, elegant aesthetics of the campus’ early California Mission Revival architecture. The campus also scores big points for its dramatic entrance via Palm Drive, its romantic Spanish red-tile roofs and myriad patches of green.

  Tsinghua University

  Beijing, China

Forbe’s panel of architects says natural setting plays a big part in assessing a campus’ beauty. In that regard, this campus is blessed: Founded in 1925, Tsinghua sits on the former site of the Qing Dynasty’s royal gardens. Many of Beijing’s most notable historical sites, like the Summer Palace, are close by. The campus is peppered with artificial ponds where stone benches and floating lotus blossoms inspire reflection.

From the outer of New York to the heart of Singapore, nature is everywhere you're not looking in some of Earth's most crowded big cities. Outdoor adventure is often just a few stops on the train - or a short drive- away from the annoying crowds. Here are a few favorites to get you going:

  Mount Hollywood Trail, Los Angeles

It's not a skyscraper or a Ferris wheel, and there's no expensive restaurant up top. But if you want an absolutely unforgettable, no-admission-charged, 360-degree view of the entire Los Angeles region, it's yours. All you have to do is walk a little. One of the preferred exercise routes, the Mount Hollywood Trail, is easily accessed from the parking lot of the famous Griffith Observatory; you see what you get at the end of this steep 1.5-mile trail, which winds its way through the Griffith Park wilds up to the mountain's 1,640-foot peak.

  Bronx River, New York

It may not be on your Top 10 list of things to do when you finally get to the Big Apple, but exploring the almost-secret river that flows through one of New York's most mysterious boroughs (自治市) is an unforgettable experience. The Bronx River Alliance, a non-profit group that has worked tirelessly to bring the much-abused river back to life , operates cycling and canoeing trips along the river, from the rugged Hunts Point section down near the harbor on up through the borough.

  Southern Islands, Singapore

Believe it or not, tightly packed Singapore does have plenty of open space left. There are actual trails right in the middle of everything, if you know where to look. But to really get away from it all, the Southern Islands, a small group of little green dots just off the city-state's southern shoreline, are just the thing.

  Lee Valley, London

This East London river valley changed last summer, when anyone near a television got an eyeful of Olympic Park, built directly in the middle of the valley. Inside the park, beautifully landscaped sections quickly became a favorite relaxation spot for games goers. At present, you'll find miles of walking paths worth exploring. Start at the Waltham Cross train and follow the signposted walking route southbound, guiding you past important historic industrial areas, through interesting city neighborhoods, past the western side of Olympic Park and on to the Thames.

  60. If someone wants to enjoy an unforgettable experience for free, he can go to ______.

  A. Mount Hollywood Trail and Bronx River B. Mount Hollywood Trail and Southern Islands
