An armless villager picked up a new life by equipping himself with homemade mechanical hands and helping hundreds of others who lost their hands to live a normal life.

Sun Jifa, now 63 years old, is living in Guanma village in northeast China抯 JiLin Province. He joined the army and served as an artillery soldiert(炮兵) in 1974 and since then he was fond of explosion.

Sun Jifa retired five years later and got married after returning home. One day in 1980, he planned to use a homemade detonator(雷管) to blow up fish from a fish pond. Because of the serious injury, doctors had to cut off his hands and elbows. At that time, he was only 27 years old. When Sun Jifa gave the man the mechanical hands some days later, the man thanked him again and again.

Madeline Domian remembers how sick her Aunt Kathi looked when she visited her in the hospital. “I didn’t think anyone would ever want to be that sick, especially kids, because all they want to do is having fun,” Madeline, 10, said.

After her aunt passed away on Sept. 1 from cancer at 65 years old, Madeline wanted to do something bigger in honor of her special aunt. Madeline came up with the idea to create chemotherapy kits (化疗箱) for kids fighting cancer.

Madeline came up with the idea to hold a contest between the grades to see who could collect more items. Students in kindergarten through the second grade were in charge of comfort items, such as socks and blankets, while the third-, fourth- and fifth-graders were focusing on activity items, such as colored pencils and games. In the kit, she抯 also including items such ras gum and hand sanitizer (洗手液) to help kids cope with the side effects of chemotherapy.

“Kids at my school love to be happy, so the fact that we’re making other kids happy makes them happy. I’m hoping to make kids with cancer smile and realize that other people care about them and believe that they can fight and win,” Madeline said.

Madeline and her schoolmates assembled (装配) 50 Katie-Do Kare 4 Kids, and she dropped them off at St. Louis Children’s Hospital on Friday. Kinsey Siadek, an 11-year-old girl with osteosarcoma (骨肉瘤), was so excited and surprised to receive a kit.

“Some of the items came at a time when I really needed them,” said Siadek, “I was just talking to my mom about how I desperately needed to cut my nails.” The blanket was her favorite item. “Knowing that the blanket was handmade gives it an extra special meaning,” Siadek said. “I can’t believe a young girl did this out of the goodness of her heart.”
