Ariana Miyamoto entered the Miss Universe Japan beauty contest after a mixed-race friend killed herself. And she endured abuse
1
winning the crown(王冠) because of her skin color.
Far from being put off by the backlash(强烈抵制), Miyamoto decided to use the fame she
2
to help fight racial prejudice. 揑 was prepared for the
3
. I didn抰 feel any added pressure because the reason I took part in the contest was my friend抯
4
. Mylor goal was to
5
awareness of racial prejudice,” said Miyamoto. “Now I have a great platform to
6
that message as the first black Miss Universe Japan.”
After Miyamoto’s victory, many critics
7
the title should have gone to what they called “pure” Japanese rather than a“haafu” (the Japanese word used to describe mixed race).
Miyamoto who turns heads in Japan with her
8
skin admitted she has had to toughen up. “I used to get bullied(欺负) as a kid but I’ve got mentally
9
to protect myself,” said the model. “When I was small, I stood out and always felt I had to fit in with everyone. I’d try not to bring
10
to myself, but now I say what I feel. I do things my
11
way.”
?Some conservative people might feel I don’t
12
the traditional Japanese image to represent the country,” said Miyamoto. “
13
I certainly have the chance to be a pioneer and it’s a(n)
14
opportunity for Japan to become more globally aware. In Japan there are
15
any black models or TV personalities. Hopefully I can help
16
a Japan where anyone can make things happen.”
But
17
her noble intentions, Miyamoto has no plans to run for government officials just yet. “I’d like to use my position to become a leader,” she smiled. “I’m like a sponge(海绵) — always
18
new things. But I haven’t thought too deeply about
19
yet. It’s still a bit
20
to think about becoming Prime Minister!”
