[2016·冀州中学月考]It's an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My wife says no because we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and what's the point if you can't go on holiday. The joy of a recession (不景气) means no argument next year—we just won't go.
Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov survey of 2,000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples.
Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money may be different things to men and women. “People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it's for,” he explains. “They'll say it's to save, to spend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them.” He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that they've achieved something.
“The biggest problem is that couples assume each other know what's going on with their finances, but they don't. There seems to be more of a taboo (禁忌) about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what you're doing, who's paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you don't have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.”
★1.What does the author say about going on holiday in Paragraph 1?
A.It will cost them too much money.
B.Few people can afford it without working hard.
C.It makes all the hard work worthwhile.
D.It is the chief cause of family quarrels.
根据文章第一段第四句“I say you only live once and we work hard and what's the point if you can't go on holiday.”
★2.According to the text, what does Kim Stephenson believe?
A.Money is often a symbol of a person's status.
B.Money means a great deal to both men and women.
C.Men and women spend money on different things.
D.Men and women view money in different ways.
根据文章第三段前两句“Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money may be different things to men and women.‘People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it's for,’ he explains.” 根据第三段最后一句“He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status...”
★3.The author suggests that couples should________.
A.put their money together instead of keeping it separately
B.discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationship
C.make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgets
D.avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic
根据文章最后一段最后一句“In a healthy relationship, you don't have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.”

[2016·武邑中学周测]I've often wondered if I might do more good as a travel agent rather than as a psychologist. It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have.
My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that. The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut in Iceland. I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks, smoky volcanoes, and lakes with floating icebergs.
The moment after we arrived, the weather turned extreme making visibility impossible. It snowed so much and the wind blew so hard that we couldn't leave the tiny hut. We tried to call for help but the radio did not work.Day after day, we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short. We got acute cabin fever (幽居病) and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside. Even when the weather finally broke, nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup. By the time the rescue team came to pull us out, we had all given up hope.
From then on, the world looks different to me, as does my life. It would have taken me years of psychotherapy to get to the same point.
Almost everyone has a story to tell, and interestingly, most of these experiences were not
altogether pleasant at the time. In fact, it appears that the most constructive lifechanging journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources, increase confidence, and solve problems in new ways.

3.From Paragraph 3, we learn that the travelers________.
A.were in despair before they were rescued
B.stayed in the hut for three days altogether
C.got sick because of going for ski outside
D.got rescued immediately the weather turned fine
根据第三段的困难描写及最后一句“By the time the rescue team came to pull us out, we had all given up hope.”可知选A。be in despair意为“绝望”。]
★4.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The writer is a travel agent who loves difficult challenges.

[2016·枣强中学猜题]Researchers are placing robotic dogs in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans. Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people's depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction. “No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active,” Edwards points out. “The problem is how we promote that,_especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog could be a solution.”
In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBO.
Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.
“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,” says a seventyyearold lady. “When I'm watching TV, he'll stay in my arms until he wants down.
He has a mind of his own.”
The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.
“At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog because it was metal and not furry,” Beck says. “But it's amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”“Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more valuable health helper. They will record their masters' blood pressure, oxygen levels, or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people's minds.”
★1.What did Beck think of robotic dogs at first?
A.People can't be able to understand them.
B.People will like them to be covered with fur.
C.People won't accept them as pets.
D.People will make them out of metal.
根据最后一段中的“At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog because it was metal and not furry”可知,开始的时候,Beck认为机器狗都是金属制成的并且没有毛发,所以人们不会理解和懂得它们。故选A。]
2.What does the underlined word “that” refer to?
A.Curing old people's depression.
B.Making older people active.
C.Getting robotic dogs for the old.
D.Placing robotic dogs in the homes.
根据画线词前面的“‘No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active,’ Edwards points out.”
★3.What is the advantage of AIBO over live dogs?
A.It can watch TV with its owner.
B.It can help the disabled people.
C.It responds to all the human orders.
D.It is easier to keep at home.
根据倒数第二段中的“Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.”
★4.The author seems to suggest that the future robotic dogs may________.
A.keep old people active
B.cure certain diseases
C.change people's beliefs
D.look more like real dogs
根据最后一段中的“these robotic pets could become a more valuable health helper... AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people's mind.” 故选A。]

Choosing the Right Resolution (决定)
Millions of Americans began 2017 with the same resolution they
started
2017
with, a goal
of losing weight. However, setting weight loss
as a goal is a mistake.
To reach our goal of losing weight—the output, we need to control what we eat—the input
That is, we tend to care about the
output but not to control the input. This is a bad way to construct
goals. The alternative is to focus your resolution on the input. Instead
of resolving to lose weight, try an actionable resolution:“I'll stop having dessert for lunch,”
or “I'll walk every day for 20 minutes.” Creating a goal that focuses on a wellspecified input will likely be more
effective than concentrating on the outcome.
Recently a new science behind incentives (激励), including in
education, has been discussed. For example, researcher Roland Fryer
wanted to see what works best in motivating children to do better in
school. In some cases, he gave students incentives based on input,
like reading certain books, while in others, the incentives were based
on output, like results on exams. His main finding was that incentives
increased achievement when based on input but had no effect when
based on output. Fryer's conclusion was that the incentives for inputs
might be more effective because students do not know how to do
better on an exam, aside from general rules like “study harder”. Reading certain books, on the other hand, is a wellset task over
which they have much more control.
As long as you have direct control over your goal, you have a
much higher chance of success. And it's easier to start again if you
fail, because you know exactly what you need to do.
If you want to cut down on your spending, a good goal would be
making morning coffee at home instead of going to a café,
for
example. This is a wellspecified actionbased goal for which you can
measure your success easily. Spending less money isn't a goal because
it's too general. Similarly, if you want to spend more time with your
family, don't stop with this general wish. Think about an actionable
habit that you could adopt and stick to, like a family movie night
every Wednesday.
In the long run, these new goals could become a habit.
★1.The writer thinks that setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake because________.
A.it is hard to achieve for most Americans
B.it is focused too much on the result
C.it is dependent on too many things
D.it is based on actionable decisions
根据第二段第一、二句“To reach our goal of losing
weight—the output, we need to control what we eat—the input. That is, we
tend to care about the output but not to control the input.”
★2.In Roland Fryer's research, some students did better than the others because________.
A.they obeyed all the general rules
B.they paid more attention to exams
C.they were motivated by their classmates
D.they were rewarded for reading some books
★3.According to the writer, which of the following statements is a good goal?
A.“I'll give up dessert.”
B.“I'll study harder.”
C.“I'll cut down my expenses.”
D.“I'll spend more time with my family.”
根据文章第二段最后一句“Creating a goal that
focuses on a wellspecified input will likely be more effective than concentrating on the outcome.”
4.The writer strongly believes that we should ________.
A.develop good habits and focus on the outcome
B.be optimistic about final goals and stick to them
C.pick specific actions that can be turned into good habits
D.set ambitious goals that can balance the input and output
作者在文章的倒数第二段举例说明了设立目标应挑选具体的行动,最后一段又再次强调“In the long run,these new goals could become a habit.”

As a substitute teacher,
my daily routine involves driving to a new school almost every day so I'm usually unable to anticipate (预料) the day's events, good or bad!
On one particular day, I was teaching in a very difficult class. I was managing behavior all the morning and by lunch time, I knew I needed coffee to even consider surviving the afternoon. So on my lunch break, I drove to a nearby plaza to get a cup of coffee.
Upon returning to the car I realized I had locked my keys and my phone inside! I had about 15 minutes to get back to the school which was a good 4 or 5-minute drive away.
I contemplated (考虑)
rushing back,
but it being winter, I thought a nasty fall on ice would only make the situation much worse.
So I ran into a McDonald's which was in the same plaza and asked the man at the counter who happened to be the manager to please call me a cab. I briefly explained my situation to him, and I could tell by the look in his eyes that he empathized. He hurried to the back to use the phone while I paced in the restaurant. I had less than 10 minutes to get back to my school at this point.
The manager returned only to tell me that the cab company had put him on hold and then the line got disconnected, and that he was now on hold again, but had not been able to request the cab yet. My expression, I assume, began to resemble some combination of hopelessness and fear.
Without a thought, he grabbed his coat and offered to drive me to the school. Without hesitation, I followed him into his car and made it back into my classroom with 2 minutes to spare before the bell!
Upon arriving at the school, I thanked this man endlessly. His calm behavior and kind nature made me think he was probably a wonderful manager to work for, and also a wonderful human being to have on this earth. This experience makes me realize that out of every seemingly hopeless situation, there is the opportunity for acts of kindness to transpire (发生),
which can have an unimaginable impact (影响) on those who receive them.

We encourage guests to arrive at the Aquarium with plenty of time to park, enter, and check into the program. Adventurers should report to the main entrance at least ten minutes ahead. The sessions will begin quickly at the scheduled time. Please plan accordingly.
