Since we are social beings, the

quality of our lives depends in large

  measure on our interpersonal

  relationships. One strength of the

  human conditions is our possibility

to give and receive support from one

  another under stressful (有压力的)

conditions. Social support makes up of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting (转移注意力) us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support—money aid, material resources, and needed services—that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.

  Goldie's Secret

She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away. No way, not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before. “We're moving house.” “No space for her any more with the baby coming.” “We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present.” People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.

I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could do to make her happy, it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous owner's. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire.

That's why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless. Eventually I couldn't hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.

By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking (舔) the four puppies (幼犬) I started to feel sympathy towards them. “We didn't know what had happened to her,” said the woman at the door. “I took her for a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared.” “She must have tried to come back to them and got lost,” added a boy from behind her.

I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I've got Nugget now, and she looks just like her mother. And I've learnt a good lesson: not to judge people.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the

area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language.

A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of 5, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference it will be.

“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.

It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),”he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34.Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

48.The main subject talked about in this passage is ________.

A.science on learning a second language

B.man's ability of learning a second language

  C.language can help brain power

  D.language learning and maths study

  【答案与解析】 C 主旨题。作者在本文第1段中就提出了本文的主题,然后下文围绕这一主题进行深入地阐述,即“语言学习可以提高你的智力”。

49.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to________.

A.say language is also a kind of physical labor

B.prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language

C.show the importance of using the language when you learn the language

D.make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well

  【答案与解析】 D 推断题。作者在这一段里把语言学习对大脑的促进作用比作体育锻炼能促进肌肉健全的促进作用,就是为了说明语言学习对大脑的促进有类似的作用。

50.The underlined word “bilingual” probably means ________.

  A.a researcher on language learning

  B.a second language learner

C.a person who can speak two languages

  D.an active language learner

【答案与解析】 C 词义猜测题。根据本词后的解释“They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners”可知其意思应是“a person who can speak two languages”。

  One possible version:

  Dear Mr Wang,

Thank you for providing us with an opportunity to share our views.

In the course of the general revision, what we need is solid foundation. So please slow down and make sure we have really mastered what we learn.Besides, we need

a little more time to think for ourselves and to digest. As for those confusing points where we often make mistakes, would you please provide us with typical exercises to practice more? Meanwhile, we need your guidance on writing, for example, how to think in English and write in idiomatic English.I still have another request: select exercises of high quality and assign us less homework.

By the way, as the examination is drawing near, we often feel frustrated, which has a very bad effect on our study. We would appreciate it if you would give us some encouragement from time to time.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
