　　Every year in the first week of my English class, some students inform me that writing is too hard. They never write, unless homework requires it. They find the writing process painful and difficult.

　　How awful it is to be able to speak in a language but not ____, especially English, with its rich vocabulary . Being able to speak but not write is like living in a large house but never leaving one small room. When I meet students who think they can’t write, I know as a teacher my duty is to show them the rest of the rooms. One great way to do this is by having students write in a journal in class every day .

　　Writing ability is like strength training . Writing needs to be done daily, just like exercise ; just as muscles grow stronger with exercise , writing skills improve quickly with daily practice. I often see a rise in students’ confidence after only a few weeks of journal writing .

　　Expressing oneself in writing is one of the most important skills I teach to strengthen the whole students. When my students practice journal writing, they are practicing for their future professional lives . They build skills so that some day they might write a great novel, a piece of news, or the perfect love letter .

　　Praise and Punishment

　　I experienced my mother’s praise and punishment, which made me feel puzzled.

　　One day, I got a full mark in maths exam but only got 50 marks in the Chinese exam. On my way home, I was in low spirits.

　　When I arrived home, my mother kissed me on the cheek as soon as she knew the result of maths and said she would take me to have a nice meal in KFC as the praise. Seeing her so happy, I quickly took out of my Chinese exam paper. But quite contrary to her behavior just now, she slapped me on my face heavily. At that moment, I couldn’t help crying.

　　I understood my mother cared more for my scores than me and I felt sad. Although I didn’t get a good mark as my parents had expected, I had tried my best actually. As a matter of fact, I needed my mother’s help when I had difficulty with my study rather than her slaps.
