NEW YORK—So we’re going away on weekends and sticking close to home. But are we traveling with the kids? Here’s how the down economy is changing the way we travel.

  SECONDARY CITIES

Some smaller cities are stealing the glory. Fort Myers, Fla. experienced double digit (位数) growth in January 2009 over January 2008, based on American Express Travel bookings. Cities like Portland, Ore. are also becoming popular destinations, with Travelocity data showing an increase of 38% over last year. Even Philadelphia’s star is rising, said Travelocity senior editor Shaw Brown.

Brown said it’s hard to explain exactly the reason for the boom: it could be a decrease in airfare or hotel prices or excellent marketing. Hotel rates in Fort Myers are down about 10%. But hotel rates in Portland are up, she said. She thinks Philadelphia’s higher popularity is due to good marketing, a decrease in airfare of 16% compared to the overall 8% decrease for domestic flights and more interest in historic destinations in general.

  FAMILY TRAVEL

Rather than take a two-week vacation to Europe, families are going to national parks.

David Mandt, spokesman for the Association of Amusement Parks, is cautiously optimistic about the summer season. He said even when gas was $4 a gallon in 2008, people continued to visit theme parks—they simply selected parks closer to their homes.

While for years, park operators have used special offers, promotions and discounts to encourage families to visit at a specific time, the deals may be easier to find this year, especially when it comes to packages that include accommodations. Universal Orlando Resort has a deal allowing families to book a three-night package and receive two additional nights free. Packages include accommodations at a hotel near Universal and unlimited theme park admission to both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.

FOR Chinese students the end of their senior year is filled with studying and stress as they prepare for the college entrance exams in June. But for American high school seniors the experience couldn't be more different. The end of senior year is a celebration of their time in high school and involves parties, games and fun.

Senioritis is a commonly used expression. It means seniors have a disease which makes them unable to do work. This starts in April when seniors find out whether they have been accepted to university.

Unwilling to do school work, seniors have plenty of other activities to focus on.

Many schools have a "Senior Show", in which only seniors are allowed to perform. Some seniors sing or dance but many of them perform skits (滑稽短剧), where they make fun of their favorite teachers or their friends. For example, a group of boys may dress up

  and

  imitate

a group of their girl friends. It is all very light-hearted.

The "Senior Show" is usually a part of Senior Week, which is a week specifically dedicated (专用的) to seniors. During this week, seniors usually get academic or athletic awards they have won over their high school careers. The seniors also vote for one of their male and female classmates who they believe is the best-looking or funniest or most involved, etc. These are then published in the yearbook.

The yearbook is an important part of high school for seniors. It is usually dedicated to them and has all their pictures and some words from them in it. Then seniors go around and get it signed by their friends so they can always remember their time together.

Keeping a full social calendar may help protect you from dementia(痴呆), researchers said on Monday. Socially active people who were not easily stressed had a 50 percent lower risk of developing dementia compared with men and women who were isolated and prone to distress, they reported in the journal Neurology.

“In the past, studies have shown that chronic distress(长期抑郁) can affect parts of the brain, possibly leading to dementia,” Hui-Xin Wang of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, who led the study, said in a statement. “But our findings suggest that having a calm and outgoing personality in combination with a socially active lifestyle may decrease the risk of developing dementia even futher.”

An estimated 24 million people worldwide have memory loss, problems with direction and other symptoms that signal Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Researchers believe the number of people with dementia may quadruple(变为四倍) by 2050, underlining the importance of better understanding the condition.

The Sweden study involved 506 elderly people who did not have dementia when first examined. The volunteers were given questionnaires about their personality traits and lifestyles and then tracked for six years. Over that time, 144 people developed dementia with more socially active and less stressed men and women 50 percent less likely to be diagnosed with the condition.

“The good news is, lifestyle factors can be modified as opposed to genetic factors which cannot be controlled, ” Wang said. “But these are early results, so how exactly mental attitude influences risk for dementia is not clear.”

(Mr. Jones, the owner of a farm, was one day driven out of the farm by all the animals he raised. The animals were excited to be free and independent. More important, they were masters of their own and, of course, their farm. Animals made seven rules of their own and Snowball painted them on the wall.)

It was very neatly written, and except that “friend” was written “freind” and one of the “S’s” was the wrong way round, the spelling was correct all the way through. Snowball read it aloud for the benefit of the others. All the animals nodded in complete agreement, and the cleverer ones at once began to learn the Commandments by heart.

“Now, comrades,” cried Snowball, throwing down the paintbrush, “to the hayfield! Let us make it a point of honor to get in the harvest more quickly than Jones and his men could do.”

But at this moment the three cows, who had seemed uneasy for some time past, let out a loud lowing. They had not been milked for twenty-four hours, and their udders were almost bursting. After a little thought, the pigs sent for buckets and milked the cows fairly successfully, their trotters (蹄子) being well adapted to this task. Soon there were five buckets of frothing creamy milk at which many of the animals looked with considerable interest.

“What is going to happen to all that milk?” said someone.

“Jones used sometimes to mix some of it in our food,” said one of the hens.

“Never mind the milk, comrades!” cried Napoleon, placing himself in front of the buckets. “That will be attended to. The harvest is more important. Comrade Snowball will lead the way. I shall follow in a few minutes. Forward, comrades! The hay is waiting.”

So the animals trooped down to the hayfield to begin the harvest, and when they came back in the evening it was noticed that the milk had disappeared.

Bargaining is an art at Xiu Shui Market in Beijing. The following tips can help you get good offers for most things you buy, especially for clothing.

Be aware that the starting price offered by the seller is at least 40% over the general price acceptable. It’s usually 80% over. It can be up to 150% over. So, always try to drop the seller’s offering price as much as possible before opening your mouth with a price.

Have an idea of the value of what you want. You can consult your Chinese friends or the hotel staff about the price. You may not be able to get the lowest prices stated at Xiu Shui Market, especially on weekends or festival seasons when there are lots of tourists around.

Do walk away once you’ve offered your final price while the seller is not ready to accept. If you get called back, you know you are close. If you do not get called back, go to a similar stall(摊位) and try again with a slight higher price. Note that if you’ve made a deal, you are then expected to buy the item.

You will help your chances at getting a good price by being confident, patient, and friendly. Treat it as a kind of game to get the most out of it --- getting angry or rude will never help to bring the price down.

  17. When can you get the lowest price at Xiu Shui Market according to the passage?

  A. When the sellers are busy.

  B. On crowded weekends.

  C. When there’re few buyers.

  D. on festival seasons.

  18. The underlined part “a deal” (in paragraph 4) most probably means ____.

  A. an appointment with someone

  B. an agreement in business

  C. a choice in shopping

  D. a delivery of goods

  19. If the seller accepts your final price, you should ____.

  A. walk away and wait for the seller to call you back.

  B. go on bargaining for a lower price

  C. go to a similar stall for a better price

  D. pay the seller for what you want

  20. From the tips we can learn that the seller’s offer may be affected by ____.

  A. the buyer’s manners

  B. the seller’s position

  C. Chinese friends

  D. hotel staff
