Italians like to say that when it comes to alcohol, they have a sipping(小酌) culture rather than a drinking culture. That means that while Italians may enjoy a

glass of wine or beer, they don't usually get very drunk.

That's not true any more. The new study by the Italian National Health Institute found that 63 percent of Italians under age 18 get drunk on the weekends. Now, the city of Milan has created a law that will stop anyone under 16 from buying alcohol. Anyone who sells or gives alcohol to a person under 16 can be fined up to $700.

Young people who feel that the new law is unfair should go to the US for some perspective (观点). The US has the highest drinking age in the world: It's illegal for anyone under 21 to buy alcohol, and stores or restaurants that are caught selling alcohol to people under the legal age risk losing their licenses.

Many young Americans complain that the drinking laws are unfair: They are allowed to vote in elections and join the army at age 18, so why wait another three years just to buy a bottle of beer?

These young people have found help in an unusual place. Last year, more than 100 presidents of US universities joined together to ask lawmakers to consider changing the drinking age. They argued that the law doesn't stop underage college kids from getting drunk—it just makes them want to drink more.

For now, the law seems unlikely to change. But US teenagers who want alcohol can go north to Canada, where the drinking age is 18—19, or south to Mexico where the legal age is 18. Throughout much of Asia, Africa and Europe, the legal drinking age ranges 16~18.

In plenty of places though, the official drinking age is ignored, and even young children can buy alcohol if they have the money to pay for it.

No matter how old you are, you should always be responsible with alcohol. Teenagers in Milan are now learning that their reckless (不顾后果的) drinking behavior may come at a high price.

By Ariel Lown Lewiton, 21st Teens Staff

  A. aims to keep Italy's sipping culture alive

  B. forbids selling alcohol to people under 16

  C. is welcomed by Italian young people

D.has reduced the number of underage youths getting drunk

由第二段的第三、四两句话“Now, the city of Milan has created a law that will stop anyone under 16 from buying alcohol. Anyone who sells or gives alcohol to a person under 16 can be fined up to $700.”

57.Which of the following places has the lowest drinking age?

  A. Milan

  B. New York

  C. Mexico

  D. Canada

58.Many US university presidents want lawmakers to consider changing the drinking age because________.

A.they've received complaints from many young Americans about the unfairness of the laws

B.they agree that people old enough to vote and join the army should be allowed to drink

C.they believe the law is pushing underage youths toward alcohol instead of stopping them

D.they don't want to see US teenagers going to neighboring countries for a drink

由第五段最后一句话“They argued that the law doesn't stop underage college kids from getting drunk—it just makes them want to drink more.”可知。

59.What can we infer from the passage?

A.Restaurants in the US don't sell alcohol to people under 21 for fear of a $700 fine.

B.The author thinks that US teenagers should go to Canada or Mexico to drink.

C.In many places, shop owners don't mind selling alcohol to underage customers.

D.Teens in Milan have to pay a lot of money for their reckless drinking behavior.

由倒数第二段“In plenty of places though, the official drinking age is ignored, and even young children can buy alcohol if they have the money to pay for it.”

One of my main concerns when I am helping people achieve their goals is how they measure success. I see individuals getting frustrated (挫败) as they struggle hard for success.

One of the main reasons that cause this frustration is that people allow their definition (定义) of success to be determined by someone or something else.Another is that they become frustrated at their own apparent (表面的) lack of success when comparing themselves to other people.

We are individuals with individual wants, skills and experiences. We should look our own skills to determine what is successful to us.We should look inward to determine what it would mean for us to be successful in our own mind rather than someone else' s.

Evaluating (评价) a successful person needs to look at his pathway to success, his actions, his determination and translate that into his own experience to see how he can improve himself.

You must set your own course of action, and stay on your course. You alone must determine what success means to you.Do what you do to the best of your ability and the rest will take care of itself. For example, I believe that I am successful but I am not a millionaire! Others may not see me as successful in their eyes but that does not matter. It is how I see myself that is important to me and my life.

Here is the truth.Being a success is doing your best, not being the best.Success is not something you become; it is something you continue being.

When we get to that point, we will experience a lot more joy and a lot less frustration. And that sounds good to us!

Remember the great quote from Napoleon Hill, “If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.”

A.It is important to do small things.

B.What matters is the course of trying to succeed.

由第六段“Here is the truth.Being a success is doing your best, not being the best.Success is not something you become; it is something you continue being.”

An Airbus A321 completed the one hour 10 minute flight from Hamburg to Frankfurt using a 50—50 mix of conventional and alternative fuel.

The trial, which will last six months, will take on 1,200 flights. Should the programme be successful, the use of biofuel—in this case biosynthetic kerosene(煤油) —will be extended to other routes.

According to Lufthansa the programme will reduce carbon emissions by 1,500 tons.

Environmental lobby groups have been skeptical of the programme, arguing that aviation's use of biofuels is less environmentally friendly than the aviation industry says.

But Christoph Franz, Lufthansa's chief executive insisted the airline's trial didn't have to use material which could otherwise be used for food production.

“Lufthansa is the first airline worldwide to use biofuel in scheduled daily flight operations. We are thus continuing to steadily implement our proven and successful strategy for sustainability,” he added.

The International Air Transport Association, which represents the world's major airlines has said that biofuel will account for 10 per cent of the total used by the industry by 2017.

It has also pledged(保证) to cut the industry's carbon footprint by improving energy efficiency and improved air traffic control which will cut the time aircraft spend in the air.

Meanwhile British Airways has entered a partnership with an American company, Solena, to turn household waste into jet fuel.

But the latest initiative(倡议)by Lufthansa has failed to satisfy Robbie Blake, biofuels campaigner for Friends of the Earth Europe.

“Lufthansa is painting itself green with biofuels—but these flights are anything but environmentally friendly,” he said.

“Biofuels exacerbate poverty and hunger, drive land grabbing and deforestation, push up food prices, and make climate change worse.

“Shorthaul flights from Hamburg to Frankfurt, biofuelled or not, can never be green. Lufthansa's passengers, and the climate, would be better off catching the train.”

63.The name “Lufthansa” mentioned in the passage might be________.

  A. the first plane using biofuel

  B. the chief executive of an airline

  C. the first airline to use biofuel in passenger flights

  D. the first pilot flying a plane using biofuel

根据第六段第一句中的“Lufthansa is the first airline worldwide to use biofuel in scheduled daily flight operations.”

64.What is the purpose of aviation's use of biofuels?

  A. To decrease the cost of the airlines.

  B. To reduce carbon footprint.

  C. To improve the flying speed of the plane.

  D. To save petrol and money

根据第三段的“According to Lufthansa the programme will reduce carbon emissions by 1,500 tons.”

65.The underlined word “exacerbate” in the passage probably means________.

  A. make something bad worse

  B. get something better

  C. weigh something

  D. change or cancel

根据下文的“...,drive land grabbing and deforestation, push up food prices, and make climate change worse.”

66.In which part of a website may the passage appear?

  A. Entertainment.

  B. Advertisement.

  C. Travel.

  D. Education.

根据第一段的“An Airbus A321 completed the one hour 10 minute flight from Hamburg to Frankfurt...”

Reading minds isn't quite simple, but it may not be impossible, either. What if a brain scan could reveal your memories?

A team of British scientists recently did just that—they used brain scans to look at spatial(空间的) memory in four people.Spatial memory is the kind of memory you use to remember where you are.You use spatial memory to remember how to get from your house to school.People build spatial memory as they explore a new city or a new building and take in information about their surroundings.

The scientists asked each participant to sit down at a computer and wander through rooms. These virtual rooms contained images of objects, like clocks and doors, so that the people could know where they were. Each person was encouraged to explore the virtual space.

As the people became familiar with these rooms, their brain cells were taking notes of where things were, and how to get from one point to another. After perusing(详细考察) these rooms, the participants were instructed to go to a specific location within the rooms. At this point, the scientists took pictures of the subjects' brains using an instrument called FMRI

As participants stared at the floor, the scientists took FMRI scans to measure brain activity. They repeated this process multiple times. After a few repetitions, the scientists could identify patterns in the subjects' brains.By looking at patterns on the brain scans, the scientists were able to read the spatial memory of the test subjects.

This experiment shows that it is possible to use FMRIs to gather some kinds of memories from people, but your secret thoughts and personal memories are safe—for now.“It is not the case that we can put someone in a brain scanner and simply read their private thoughts,” says one of the scientists who worked on the project.

67.Which of the following about spatial memory is TRUE?

B.Because scientists can't understand all pictures taken by FMRIs.

C.Because FMRIs can't gather any memories from people.

D.Because FMRIs can't be completely reliable now.

  C.a very important research

  D.spatial memory and FMRIs

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive experiences in nightmares.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly wipe out, the effect of painful memories.

In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are wiped out. They are not sure to what degree people's memories are affected.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.

Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war.

They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.

“Some memories can ruin people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,” said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry (精神病学) at Harvard Medical School. “This could relieve a lot of that suffering.”

But those who are against the research say that maybe the pills can change people's memories and changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out,” said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

Good morning, everyone. It was an honor to have been selected to go on a study tour to Britain. On the morning of July 26th, we arrived at Heathrow Airport where we were warmly welcomed by our homestay families. Then we went to different families where we had traditional English food and chatted happily. Later we went to Westminster College to attend a presentation about the school. A professor gave us a vivid introduction and we learned a lot about that school. In the following days we visited some famous scenic spots such as Big Ben and London Eye.

We took many photos there. On the last day we had a farewell party at which students from China and Britain gave fantastic performances including songs and dances.

From the study tour, we have improved our speaking skills and also we have got a better understanding of British culture.

  That's all. Thank you.
