The market is a concept. If you are growing tomatoes in your backyard for sale you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbor and some to the local manager of the supermarket. But in either case, you are producing for the market. Your efforts are being directed by the market. If people stop buying tomatoes, you will stop producing them.

The market may be something abstract(抽象的). But for each person or business who is making and selling something, it is very concrete. If nobody buys your tomatoes, it won’t be long before you get the message. The market is telling you something. How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups, and, old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What’s more, life is always giving new things to the child——things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done.
When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
51.According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that
.
A.life for a child is fairly easy
B.a child is always loved whatever he does
C.if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
D.only children are interested in life
52.The main idea of the passage is that
.
A.life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
B.young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
C.childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s life
D.one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life
53.The paragraph following this passage will most probably discuss
.
A.examples of successful young men
B.how to build up one’s position in society
C.joys and pains of old people
D.what to do when one has problems in life
C
In the United States today, a large group of people want a college education. However, everyone is not able to attend a four-year college. Many four-year colleges are already too crowed. To give more people a chance to get a college education, some cities and towns have built junior colleges.
The junior college offers a two-year courses of study in a wide range(范围)of subjects. It prepares some young people to go on to a four-year college. It trains others for jobs in business, government, or industry.
Because junior colleges are built in cities, they can serve many people who live in a large community. Many students can not afford to go to a four-year college. But they can save enough to go to a junior college. The entrance fee at a junior college is low. Students can also save money by living at home.
A junior college admits some high school graduates who would not be accepted at other schools. The four-year college turns down students whose high school grades are low. The junior college will often admit a student who might do well in taking a two-year course.
One of the goals of our country is to educate as many people as possible. The junior college is a school meant to serve many people. It puts a college education within the reach of a great number of people. Without these schools, many people would not be able to continue their education past high school.
54.The main idea of paragraph One is that junior colleges
.
A.offer two-year courses B.are as good as four-year colleges
C.are badly needed
D.are too crowed
55.According to the passage, junior colleges

B.can admit more students than four-year colleges

D.only train students for jobs in business
56.It is known the passage that
.
A.all high school graduates can go to colleges
B.junior colleges are built in cities while four-year colleges are in the country
C.junior colleges are replacing four-year college
D.junior college help to make college education popular
D
If you planning to study in the United States, you need to consider several factors (因素). Everyone has different opinions about where is the best place to live in. Also, the best places to live in are not always home to the best schools. What’s more, many schools specialize in different areas of study. They Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for example, is a great school for computer science. And if you want to study oceanography, your interests may be better served by attending school in a place which is near the ocean.
Now I will tell you about which states I believe are the best to live in. California is a nice state. Northern California especially has very good weather. As for me, I enjoyed the time I spent in Massachusetts, Virginia and Mary land. These states have a lot of history and culture. The weather is not so perfect as that in California, but is still quite nice. My favourite of America is the Midwest. Middle America, I think, is home to the true American sense of values. Besides, there are many good universities, too.
Also you need to think about your likes and dislikes and then research the different areas. You like sunshine and hate snow? Then you probably won’t like the Midwest or even the Northeast. Open space, nature, peace and quiet? Then you’d better stay away from America’s larger cities. Are you interested in government? Then Washington D.C. is the only place for you. Whatever you decide, put some thought into it.
57. From the first paragraph we can infer that in the USA
.
A. all colleges and universities lie in big cities
B. all colleges and universities lie in beautiful places
C. famous colleges and universities lie in nice places
D. famous colleges and universities may not lie in nice places
58.
should be considered first if you want to study in the USA.
A. The climate B. The scenery C. The study condition D. The living condition
59. The writer likes Middle America best because
.
A. he feels the real character of the nation here
B. the weather is fine here
C. the life is full of excitement
D. he likes sunshine and hates snow
60. The passage mainly
.
A. tells us something about American universities.
B. gives us some advice on studying in America
C. lets us know about America
D. describes the scenery of America
