Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go backpacking last year.
He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to record his adventures. He says he wished he had gone on his own earlier.
“The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task.” said the 30-year-old, “I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”
One of the greatest concerns of young people who are considering traveling abroad unaccompanied is that they’ll be lonely. Yet, young people are also fascinated by loneliness. Perhaps it is because they have grown up in a world where you are always contactable, and want to know what it’s like to be cut off. Or, perhaps it’s because they believe that only by being without distractions(干扰) can you truly experience the world around you.
The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said: “Only by going alone in silence, without baggage, can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness. All other travel is mere dust and hotels and baggage and chatter.” 独自旅行,真正体会周围的世界,成了许多年轻人了解世界、锻炼自己的新方式。

Homeschooling is the education of children at home, usually by parents, rather than in a formal public school setting. Due to its various advantages, homeschooling is now widely practiced in the United States.
Personalized learning is definitely one of the advantages of homeschooling. Too often in our public schools a lesson has to be repeated many times before moving on even though your child may understand the problem, while homeschooling gives your child the opportunity to skip things that he has already mastered. On the other hand, there is a possibility that your child may not completely grasp a math concept. Then homeschooling may provide the opportunity to repeat necessary issues. Therefore, homeschooling can meet your child’s individual needs for the speed of study. Besides, some children learn best in the morning, in the afternoon or in the evening, and homeschooling allows you to work out a learning schedule that will best work for your child.
Additionally, most public schools have a single teacher to care for a class of many students because of the low student-teacher ratio (比例), which results in lack of attention given to each child, while in a homeschooling environment a child gets the undivided attention of the parent/teacher and thus is able to understand academic issues at a better level as well as a faster pace. As the children can ask questions at just about any time without having to worry about other students, they can move on confidently with their problems solved.
Homeschooling also offers much flexibility (机动性). A day’s learning can end at any time when the child is too tired to go on. Likewise, the timetable can be changed when there is a special learning opportunity, such as attending an interesting event or visiting with informative people. In addition, children can take practical lessons anywhere when they need to do so. Homeschooling parents usually make their classrooms much larger than just their home, making trips to science museums or zoos, or carrying out field trips in other locations. Moreover, flexibility in curriculum is also an advantage. You can choose curriculum that is tailored to your child. Children have different learning styles, and you can use programs that meet your child’s particular style. 41.____________ of Homeschooling Ⅰ. Before jetting off to Paris, Madrid or Rome, holidaymakers should consider a trip to Birmingham, according to a new list of places to visit in 2017.
The New York Times “45 Places to Go in 2017”, published recently, finds room for England’s disreputable second city at number 19, ahead of the likes of Vienna, Jordan, Dubrovnik and Antarctica, while the Italian, Spanish and French capitals missed out entirely.
Birmingham made the list after it was named Britain’s “foodiest town” by Olive, BBC’s food magazine, in October. The New York Times highlights four restaurants run by local chefs: Lasan, Opus, Edmunds and Loves, as well as three Michelin-starred establishments: Purnell’s, Simpsons and Turners of Harborne. It also mentions Birmingham’s famous Balti Triangle, and its no-nonsense cooking heritage—the city is the birthplace of Typhoo Tea, Bird’s Custard and HP Sauce.
Panama topped the New York Times list. The country is recommended for its colorful nightlife, good snorkeling and trendy, up-and-coming capital city.
Helsinki, appointed the World Design Capital for 2017 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, and Myanmar, now back on travellers’ routes after Aung San Suu Kyi withdrew her objection to independent tourism last year, completed the top three.
Neil Rami, Chief Executive of Marketing Birmingham, which manages Birmingham Food Fest—noted in The New York Times listing—said:
“Birmingham has worked hard to improve its reputation as a visitor destination in recent years by showing amongst other attributes, our fantastic and diverse foodie offer. Our Michelin star chefs and fine dining restaurant scene have catapulted the city into the cooking spotlight.”
Other British destinations to feature were London, at number four, Glasgow, at number 12, and Wales, at 31. 51. Which cities ranked the top three on the list of places to visit in 2017? (No more than 5 words)(2 marks)

Reading books not only broadens our horizons but also enriches our minds. Some books are to be overlooked, others are to be tasted, and some few to be chewed, digested all life long. So far, I have read numerous books, such as magazines, novels, story books and so on. Yet one of the books that I like best is My Life Story.
It was created in 1902 by an American writer—Helen Keller, a blind, deaf and dumb person. In the book, she wrote that she had not been able to see, hear or speak since the age of one year and seven months, which made her desperately sad. When she was seven years old, she knew Miss Sullivan, her private tutor. Helen was getting happier every day. Then, Miss Sullivan helped her learn how to write English words. At first, Miss Sullivan wrote some words on Helen’s hands with her own fingers again and again. Helen tried as much as possible to remember words and her efforts paid off. After that, she wrote and published many famous works, among which is My Life Story. My Life Story described her hard struggle to become an outstanding writer and educationist across the world.
It shows us a universal truth: “Nothing is difficult if you put your heart into it!” This is why I like it best.

Are you tired of traveling with family, friends, the loved one or passing acquaintances?
Young people are carrying their passports and trekking around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone with only their backpacks.
Kristina Wegscheider, from San Jose in California, the US, first traveled unaccompanied when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life.
“It opens your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone,” said the 28-year-old, who works in human resources for a technology company.
Foreign lands can be difficult to get through at the best of times. With no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, they are challenging.
This is what drives young people to go alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
