Frederick M. Hess is the director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, which is a nonprofit organization that conducts research on many public issues. He says that a long summer vacation doesn’t make sense in today’s world.

Can American students afford to take a summer vacation? In a summer vacation, millions of kids spend valuable time sending messages, watching TV, playing video games and doing shopping in the mall. They will also be putting their academic futures at risk.

Summer vacation once made sense in the past when you didn’t need an education to get a good job. But now things have changed. For today’s students, academic skills are important to students’ future success, but such skills are affected in the summertime. Many nations don’t give kids an Americanstyle summer vacation. They offer no more than seven consecutive(连续的)weeks of vacation. Most American school districts offer up to thirteen weeks. To compete in the global marketplace, Americans must be prepared to go up against international competitors.

Summer vacation also causes challenges for today’s families. In the 1960s, more than 60% of families had a stayathome Mom. Now, twothirds of American children live in households where every adult works. For these families, summer vacation can be more burden than break. Someone must watch the kids.

But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement. Researchers have found that disadvantaged students lose significant ground in the summertime.

A longer school year does not have to be an invitation to hard boring work. Rather, it should allow timepressed teachers to conduct richer and more imaginative lessons. Schools would have more time to devote to athletics, languages, music and the arts. Summer vacation can be a grand thing. But in the 21st century, it may also be outdated.

  3.D be addicted to表示“沉溺于……,对……

comfortable“舒服的,舒适的”;suitable“适当的,合适的,适宜的”;convenient“方便的,便利的,合适的”;available“可利用的,可得到的”。

benefit常与介词 for搭配,构成 for one's benefit=for the benefit of表示“为了……

pull through“恢复健康”;pull out“撤出,退出”;pull up“(车子)停下”;pull over“把车开到路边”。

lift up“举起,吊起”;go up“上升,增加,上涨”;bring up“养育,抚养”; grow up“成长,逐渐形成”。

  12.B 根据上下文,尤其是第一段中的they never fully appreciated their mothers可知此处应选appreciate。

  13.A 此处do代替逗号之前的change。

14.D 此处what an extraordinary person she is是realise的宾语从句。

  16.B 此处in her presence意为:母亲在场。

  18.A 此处raise a child意为:养育孩子。

20.C 此处a college student who knows everything意为:无所不知的大学生。

  23.C 此处continue to be a mother意为:依然是母亲。

  24.B 根据英语惯用法,be ready with意为“准备好……

  27.B being essentially herself

  28.C deserve“值得,应该得到”。

  29.A set an(the)example(树立榜样)是固定搭配。

30.D I will look as good in the eyes of my children as my mother looks in mine

  32.C

33.B 根据最后一段中的he is a fictional (小说的) character, not a real person可知B为答案。

  34.C disguise

根据第一段最后一句“He says that a long summer vacation doesn’t make sense in today’s world.”

根据第三段“Most American school districts offer up to thirteen weeks.”

根据第二段“…playing video games and doing shopping in the mall.”

根据第五段“But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement.”

根据最后一段“Rather, it should allow timepressed teachers to conduct richer and more imaginative lessons.”

文章最后提到“Summer vacation can be a grand thing. But in the 21st century, it may also be outdated.”

根据文章最后“But in the 21st century, it may also be outdated.”
