It’s one of the most dangerous jobs in the world—spiritual keeper of Mount Merapi, an active volcano on the border of Indonesia and Java.

Villagers living on the sides of Merapi believe that there are violent mysterious spirits living on the mountain top. They believe the volcano keeper has the power to speak to the spirits. So his job is to appease (安抚) the spirits of the mountain by bringing them gifts. And Mbah Maridjan, an 85-year-old man, was a keeper of the volcano.

When Merapi became restless in 2006 the government ordered people living in the villages nearby to leave their homes. According to a report from The New York Times, Maridjan, the mysterious keeper of the volcano, refused to leave. His heroism made him a celebrity. He appeared in a TV advertisement for an energy drink.

But Maridjan’s luck ran out when Merapi erupted in October, 2010.His burnt body was found in his house. He was kneeling in prayer (祈祷). Some 29 others died as well. It was said that some were following his example. Maridjan’s death has caused a debate between superstition (迷信) and science, according to The New York Times. Surono, an Indonesian volcanologist, told The New York Times: “The lesson from Mbah Maridjan is, when it comes to volcanoes, abandon superstition and believe in science. You must respect nature.”

Volcanoes are terrible. I once flew over Mount St Helens, a volcano in the Northwest Pacific region of the United States. It had erupted nine years earlier with serious consequences: 57 people died; thousands of deer, bears, dogs, cows and fish disappeared; hundreds of homes were destroyed. We could still see the trail (痕迹) of destruction from our plane.

Most people would escape as quickly as possible if a nearby volcano erupted. I know I would. So Maridjan, the keeper of Mount Merapi, must have been a brave as well as a holy man. But I can’t help thinking that a dozen victims died for trying to persuade him to leave the mountain.

  28. How does the volcano keeper appease the spirits of the mountain? (No more than 4 words)

  29. How many people died when Merapi erupted in October, 2010? (No more than 3 words)

give out“用完,耗尽”;give off“发出,放出”;give in“屈服,投降”;give up“放弃,终止”。

根据下文“You were looking forward to it.”

  4.C be connected with“与…… be connected to仅表示“和……

8.A It’s time for sth.“是…… It’s time for sb. to do sth.“某人该做某事的时间了。”

not only位于句首时主谓要倒装,因此该句子中的主语teachers’ energy与谓语was saved要用倒装语序。

shy and cautious意为“害羞的与谨慎的”;sensitive and thoughtful意为“敏感的与体贴的”;honest and confident意为“诚实的与自信的”; light-hearted and optimistic意为“无忧无虑的与乐观的”。

掌握短语make great efforts to do sth.,如果将其变成被动语态即为great efforts must be made。

give an impression on/upon给……

  16.A 联系下文“Yes, I believe in God.” 其他选项中,care for照顾,喜欢;fight against与……

Cassia did not have a chance to respond. The gunman had already shot her dead.

  22.B the dramatic decision

  23.A 联系下文in which the hero dies a martyr’s(殉教的) death,我们知道,因为《勇敢的心》的主人公为教义而死,与自己有同样的信仰,因此这是她最喜欢的电影。

  24.C 联系空后的have made into wigs for cancer patients我们知道,她把自己的头发留起来,以准备将来把它剪下来留给癌症病人。dress up装扮,打扮;put up 举起,张贴,建立;make smart弄整洁。
