  Ⅱ.阅读理解

In a house with more than one kid, there are bound (一定的) to be some problems. Brothers and sisters borrow stuff, and don't always return it in good shape. Younger kids sometimes feel the older kids get to do whatever they want. Older brothers and sisters think that the baby of the family gets more attention. These are typical problems found throughout the ages, everywhere in the world.

When brothers and sisters don't get along well, it's called sibling rivalry. A sibling is a brother or sister and rivalry means competition. It's normal, but too much competition can make for an unhappy home life.

A little competition isn't a bad thing.Sometimes it can keep you working hard—when you and your brother spend time shooting hoops. If he's good at it, it may make you want to improve, too. But some sibling rivalry involves arguments—when you think your brother is hogging (独占) the ball. People who love each other might argue sometimes, but too much fighting is unpleasant for everyone.

Have you ever heard of the greeneyed monster called jealousy (嫉妒)? Sometimes brothers and sisters are jealous of one another. For instance, if your sister always does well at school, it may be frustrating for you, especially if your grades are lower. Although you're probably proud of your brothers and sisters, it's normal to be a little jealous, too. It may make you feel better to focus more on doing your own personal things, rather than comparing yourself with a brother or sister.

All kids want attention from their parents, but sometimes you need to take turns. If you're feeling ignored or your brother or sister is always in the spotlight, talk to your mom or dad. If a parent knows you're feeling left out, he or she can think out ways to help you feel better again.

Some people laugh quietly. Others give a loud, hearty laugh called a “belly laugh”. No matter how we laugh, laughter is a necessary part of a healthy, happy life. We can easily recognize laughter, but what exactly is it?

First of all, laughter is a function of the body. According to medical researchers, laughter is a series of movements of the muscles in the face and the respiratory (呼吸的) system. These movements cause the heart, lungs, and the liver to rub and press each other during a hearty laugh. These parts of the body are exercising. It's a massage(按摩)inside the body! These movements also cause the heart to beat faster and increase the flow of blood to the brain. When the laughter stops, the heart slows down and the muscles relax. The results are a feeling of pleasure and wellbeing.

It is also possible that laughter supports our bodies' defense against disease. Studies at Loma Linda University show that laughter can help our white blood cells make antibodies to fight infection and disease.

Laughter is also a psychological expression. According to some psychologists, laughter shows that we are not afraid or worried. Think of a parent who takes a young child into a swimmingpool. At first, the child probably doesn't laugh and may even cry. However, once the child is sure that the parent will not let go, he or she begins to laugh and enjoy the water.

If we laugh to show we are not afraid or worried, then why do some people laugh when they are nervous or afraid? That is easy to explain. People laugh then because they want to pretend to be in control. Think of a student who laughs easily before a big examination. The student is saying to himself and to others, “See, this isn't bothering me.”Laughter can help us go through a difficult time. It helps us cope with problems. Research has shown that laughter can even help people handle pain.

Laughter, then, measures our ability to handle the world around us. If we can laugh when we are afraid, we will be able to survive our troubles. If we are in control and sure of ourselves, then we can laugh and enjoy life.

  答案:1.Laughter 2.Movements 3.Facial 4.Advantages/Benefits 5.exercise 6.Resulting 7.ability 8.Pretending

  9.pain 10.survive
