我们钦佩的不仅是冠军(Not Only the Champions We Admire)
The 28th Olympic Games were held in their ancient birthplace and demonstrated amazing eye-feast to the people of five continents. As we all know, the Olympic Games are grand international events of human beings. To some extent, they are a miniature of a country’s overall power. Therefore, every country focuses much attention on the Games. As for athletes, it is a supreme honor to peak in the competitions.
In turn it costs athletes years of efforts and dedication to fulfill their dreams and chase the title. Every time I watch the fierce competition, words of Zhang Yining, Chinese table tennis gold medalist, ring in my ears, “It costs an athlete so much, both physically and mentally, to become an Olympic Champion. You must stand all setbacks and frustrations to go this far.” When we appreciate the beautiful and professional performance by the Olympians, we know there must be an arduous road for every one of them to go this far. When competitors smile to stand high at the award ceremonies, we congratulate them on their success because their long-time dedication and efforts have been paid off.
However, we cannot forget those sorrowful heart-broken Olympians. We cannot bear to see them to be so dolor. No matter what happens, they are the heroes in our minds. They are worthy of people’s admiration and heated applaud in spite of what the results are. Sports field is so cruel to athletes, for there is no alternative: win or fail. It domes to have only one champion in an apparatus. But people watch not only the champions, they admire those who demonstrate great sportsmanship as well. Many heroes, and many precious moments will never fade from our memory. Let’s look at some heroes and share the great moments. The first unforgettable scene is the “Three Musketeers”. Chinese men foil team finished second with a 45-42 loss to Italy and left the stadium with bitterness and regret because of the unfair judgment by the referees. But we still respect them and admire their unyielding spirit and everlasting boldness. In our heart, they are more the champions whatever they finished. Another unforgettable scene is Alexei Nemov, the Russian gymnast, who finished his parallel bars with excellent performance. However, judgers gave him a surprising low score that triggered the spectators’ dissatisfactory hush lasting for more than 15 minutes and broke the competition.
Then, Nemov returned to the platform and waved to the spectators to show his gratitude, and gestured them to continue the competition. The scene, I believe, all the present Olympians and audience would never forget. The hero here not only showed people his beautiful and excellent talent but also his sparkling personality. As the old saying goes, “It is not the result but the process that matters.” Indeed, people judge their heroes this way. Many examples, such as table tennis player Waldner, gymnast Khorkina, Chinese women hokey team, can show that people admire not only the champions but also those who compete with excellent sportsmanship.
