  完形填空(时间:10分钟)

Adults are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practised in the meantime. A man who has not had an opportunity to go swimming for years can ___21___ swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after several decades and still    22    away. A mother who has not    23   the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or recite the story of Cinderella or Snow White.

  One explanation is the    24

of over learning, which can be stated as following: Once we have learned something, additional learning increases the    25    of time we will remember it.

In childhood, we usually continue to practise such skills as swimming, bicycle riding long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and    6    ourselves of poems such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella or Snow White. We not only learn but  __27   .

The law of over learning explains why cramming (突击学习) for an examination, it may result in a(an)    28

grade, is not a    29    way to learn a school course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little over learning,    30   , is usually a good investment toward the future.

Robinson Diaz lives in a small cottage high in the Andes Mountains of South America. Diaz is a “cable racer”, and every morning he faces the difficult task of taking the local teacher to her school. To do this, he first walks for an hour up to a place the locals call Los Pinos, right at the edge of the 400-foot deep gorge (峡谷) of the Negro valley. Here, one end of a thick metal cable has been fixed to a wooden post. The cable stretches right across the deep valley to the other side, a kilometer away.

A metal hook is fixed to the cable, with leather straps hanging from it. Diaz fastens the straps around his shoulders and waist, does a quick safety check and then, without hesitating, throws himself off the edge of the mountain. Attached to the cable by only the metal hook, he rapidly picks up speed and soon he is racing through the air. Crossing the valley by wire takes him 30 seconds, instead of the two hours it would take him to walk down through the rain forest and climb up the steep muddy slopes on the other side.

As Diaz begins his trip, Diana Rios, a 23-year-old elementary teacher, is waiting on the other side of the gorge for the moment when he will come racing through the mist towards her at 100 mph. She will then return with him, hanging on to him as he goes back along the cable. Diana had no idea when she took the teaching job that just getting to work in the village school would be dangerous. "At first I wanted to cry," she says, clutching her hook as the metal cable starts to rattle (喀哒作响) violently at Diaz’s approach. “But I soon got used to it.” She still prefers to go with Diaz, though, rather than making the frightening and dangerous crossing on her own.

For the inhabitants(居民) of Los Pinos, the wire cable is a lifeline. For more than 50 years, it has served the community as a form of transport to and from the rest of the world. Everything that comes arrives via the cable----bricks and wood for building, sacks of rice and corn. Pregnant mothers, who must get to the nearest clinic, cross the wire during the darkness of the night, returning with their newborn babies. It is dangerous, but they have no choice.

This time Robinson Diaz makes a perfect landing on Diana’s side of the gorge. For him, the dangers of this daily journey are insignificant. “What I’m really scared of is snakes,” he says. “This is nothing in comparison.” Then Dianna straps herself into her harness and hooks herself up to the wire behind Diaz, holding on to him tightly. He turns, flashes her a smile, releases the brake and kicks away. Within seconds, teacher and cable-racer have disappeared back into the mist.

Robinson Diaz has a difficult task every morning because he has to________.

In the second paragraph, the writer suggests that Diaz is________.

Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected ,means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no,” criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face .For some jobs, it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialogue may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.

Humor is often the best way to keep a small misunderstanding from escalating into a big deal .Recently a neighbor of mine had a squabble with his wife as she drove him to the airport .Airborne, he felt miserable, and he knew she did, too. Two hours after she returned home, she received a long-distance phone call.“person-to-person for Mrs. I .A .Pologize,”intoned the operator. “That’s spelled‘P’as in….” .In a twinkling, the whole day changed from grim to lovely at both ends of the wire.

An English hostess with a quick wit was giving a formal dinner for eight distinguished guests whom she hoped to enlist in a major charity drive. Austerity(节俭) was a fashion in England at the time, and she had asked her children to serve the meal. She knew that anything could happen----and it did, just as her son, with the studied concentration of a tightrope walker ,brought in a large roast turkey. He successfully elbowed the swinging dining-room door, but the backswing threw the bird onto the dining-room floor.

The boy stood rooted: guests stared at their plates .Moving only her head the hostess smiled at her son, “No harm, Daniel ,” she said. “Just pick him up and take him back to the kitchen”… she enunciated clearly so he would think about what she was saying … “and bring in the other one .”

A wink and a one-liner instantly changed the dinner from a red-faced embarrassment to a conspiracy of fun.

What is the main idea of the passage?

  A. Humor is the key to success in our work and our lives.

  B. Humor enables us to cope with difficult situation effectively.

  C. Humor is the only best way to criticize someone without losing his face.

  D. Humor makes fun of any difficult situations.

Which of the following is NOT stated in the passage?

  A. Comedians on TV are believed to have done a lot in making people more tolerant of racial and religious differences.

  B. To make up differences, humor is a most acceptable as well as a most effective means.

  C. People often turn to humorous ways when meeting with difficult situations because of its effectiveness.

  D. Only by adopting the means of humor can one succeed in some jobs.

What caused the roast turkey to drop onto the floor?

  A. The backward movement of the door.

  B. The son’s hasty behavior.

  C. Someone happened to be at the door.

  D. The bird raised by the family.

By saying“… and bring in the other one,” the hostess meant that_______.

  A. the son had to cook another turkey for the guests

  B. she already had made more than one turkey ready for the dinner.

  C. some other dish would be served instead of a turkey

  D. the son could serve the same turkey after it was cleaned

What do you think would probably be the result if the hostess got angry and scolded the son?

  A. It would make the embarrassing situation worse

  B. The son would refuse to serve the guests any more

  C. The son would talk back and make the mother all the more angry

  D. The guests would leave before the dinner was over

  C

Not long ago, we argued in this space that because America has some of the best tap water available, it is time to start thinking twice about drinking commercially bottled water. One big reason is that a lot of petroleum is required to manufacture and transport the plastic bottles, thus adding to global warming and other environmental problems. Of course, in certain circumstances bottled water is necessary. It is essential during emergencies — think Katrina — and it is certainly a better alternative when the only other drinks come loaded with calories.

What the rising use of bottled water leaves us with, however, is a huge recycling problem. Of the mountain of individual plastic water bottles created by Americans each year — enough to hold more than seven billion gallons of water — less than one-fourth are sent to the recycling industry for a second round. That makes absolutely no sense for the environment or for the economy.

The recycling industry sees plastic water bottles as a major commodity because they can be turned into anything from fleece jackets to a very durable set of luggage. One reason so few water bottles are recycled is that except in a very few states, they cannot be redeemed at the local grocery store.

But recycling rates are significantly higher in the 11 states that pay customers a nickel (and in some cases a dime) if they return their bottle. But only three of these states — California, Hawaii and Maine — include water bottles. Passing new bottle laws or expanding old laws to include plastic bottles should be an easy call for most Legislatures. But the grocery and drink industry have been able to use their clout, and campaign funds, to keep that from happening. That needs to change.

There are other ways to encourage recycling. At many public places — ballgames or city parks, for example — it is often much easier to buy a bottle of water than to find a recycling bin to throw it away. And in some areas, like parts of Philadelphia, officials are experimenting with ways to pay homeowners by the pound for recycled trash, a trend definitely worth watching.

Of course, for most people, the simplest recycling solution of all might be to wash a plastic bottle out and refill it with fresh water from the tap.

What is the writer’s attitude towards bottled water?

  A. It is completely unnecessary.

  B. It will make people fat easily because it contains calories.

  C. Producing bottled water will worsen global warming.

  D. It is less tasty than tapping water.

What is a possible cause of low recycling rates of plastic water bottles?

  A. Plastic water bottles have little recycling value.

  B. In some public places, not enough dustbins are set up to collect bottles.

  C. The recycling industry will cost much to recycle bottles.

  D. Consumers of bottled water are not willing to have their bottles recycled.

The underlined word “redeemed” in the third Paragraph probably means ______.

  A. changed into an amount of money

  B. returned

  C. collected D. recycled

We can infer from the passage that _____.

  A. Americans will consume more than seven billion gallons of water each year

  B. consumers of bottled water in California will get some money back if they return their plastic bottles to grocery store

  C. new laws have been set up to encourage plastic bottle recycling

  D. government should buy recycled garbage from people

We can conclude from the passage that the writer ______.

  A. encourages people to wash plastic bottles to better recycle them

  B. calls for all social class’s contribution to collecting and recycling garbage

  C. wants people to drink more tap water than bottled water

  D. criticizes grocery and drink industry for their irresponsibility to recycle plastic bottles
