  高三英语限时练习四

  完形填空(时间:10分钟)

One topic is rarely mentioned in all the talk of improving standards in our schools: the almost complete failure of foreign-language teaching. As a French graduate who has taught for more than twenty-five years, I believe I have some idea of why the failure is so total.

  21

the faults already found out in the education system as a whole ?such as child-centred learning, the u“discovery” method, and the low expectations by teachers of pupils ?there have been several serious

  22

which have a direct effect on language teaching.

rThe first is the removal from the curriculum (课程) of the thorough teaching of English

23 . Pupils now do not know a verb from a noun, the subject of a sentence from its object, or the difference between the past, present, or future.

Another important error is mixed-ability teaching, or teaching in ability groups so

  24

that the most able groups are

  25

and are bored while the least able are lost and

  26

bored. Strangely enough, few head teachers seem to be in favour of mixed-ability school football teams.

Progress depends on memory, and pupils start to forget immediately they stop having 27

lessons. This is why many people who attended French lessons at school, even those who got good grades, have

  28

it a few years later. Because they never need it, they do not practice it.

Most American schools have accepted what is inevitable and

  29

modern languages, even Spanish, from the curriculum. Perhaps it is time for Britain to do the same, and stop

  30

resources on a subject which few pupils want or need.

  语法填空(时间:10分钟)

The word “pub” is the short form for “ public house” in Great Britain. It

  31

(suppose) to be the Englishmen’s favourite meeting place,

  32

they can get together with friends over a pin of beer and talk about football, horse racing

  33

business. Pubs are usually open from 11 a.m. to midnight.

You may notice that the pub is the Englishmen’s meeting place. It is not quite respectable for 34

woman to go into a pub alone. She must have a man go with

  35

. Perhaps that’s partly the reason

  36

  pubs depress me---they are intended

  37

(main) to provide for make interests.

  Most Englishmen have

  38

favourite local, where they can escape

  39

the pressures of family life or work, and if they are lucky, they can tell their troubles to a pretty bar-girl. Indeed many men dream of retiring from their 9 to 5 jobs and

  40

(buy) a little country pub, where they imagine they will be the host of a seven night a week party.

Last year, a report by a committee of education experts said that a lot of American students cannot write well. The report noted the concerns of business leaders and teachers. The experts said that more students should have to pass a writing test before they can finish high school. They pointed out that major college entrance tests are changing now to include a writing part.

Educators know that teaching students to write well is not easy. One problem is the amount of time needed to read through large amounts of work. So some companies have developed computer programs. These can grade students writing more quickly than a person can. Writing tests can also cost less to carry out by computer than paper-and-pencil. These computer systems are known as e-readers. They use artificial intelligence to think in a way like teachers. In the State of Indiana, computer grading of a statewide writing test began with a test of the system itself. For two years, both a computer and humans graded the student writing. Officials say there was almost no difference between the computer grades and those given by the human readers.

The entrance test commonly used by business schools, the GMAT, already uses e-readers. The GRE and TOEFL tests might start; officials are deciding. The GRE is the Graduate Record Examination. TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

Systems are also being used to grade writing in college classes. The computers read a few hundred examples of student writing already graded by humans. Then the systems compare new writing against those already examined.

How do teachers feel all about this? Many say machines can never do the job as well as people can. A computer can find spelling and grammar mistakes. But these teachers say it can never really understand what a writer is trying to say. Critics say a program cannot follow a thought or judge humor or understand a beautifully expressed idea.

But inventors of the programs say computer grading guarantees that each piece of writing is graded in the same way. They also say the systems are meant to judge knowledge more than creativity.

  Gene technology to benefit people

Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.

The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span(寿命) can be prolonged.

Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial family being a good example, have hereditary diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it, and a healthy child will be born.

Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep, therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.

  46. What does “these two killers” in the second paragraph refer to ?

A gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases.

  D. Gene technology can help the English imperial family out

  48. In what way gene technology can help to treat hereditary diseases?

  A. Using gene technology, people with hereditary diseases can have more living days.

  B. Using gene technology, scientist finds the wrong gene and corrects it.

  C. Using gene technology, human babies can be cloned.

  D. Doctors can cure cancer and heart disease with the help of gene technology.

  49. What is the main purpose of writing this passage?

  A. Expressing the writer’s idea that gene technology will benefit people

  B. Telling people the advantages of gene technology

  C. Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people

  D. Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity

  50. Which of the following worries people by using this technology?

  A. Scientists have already successfully cloned sheep.

  B. Most couple will normally give birth to babies.

A peer is a person who is about the same age as you. Peers affect your life, whether you know it or not, just by spending time with you.

Peers can have a good effect on one another. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the planets in solar system. Maybe you got others excited about your new favorite book and now everyone’s reading it.

However, sometimes peers affect one another in another way. For example, one kid in school might try to get another to cut class with him, your soccer friend might try to persuade you to be mean to another player and never pass her the ball, or a kid in the neighborhood might want you to shoplift with him.

Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, to fit in, or because they worry that other kids may make fun of them if they don’t go along with the group. Others may go along because they are curious to try something new that others are doing. The idea that “ everyone’s doing it” may influence some kids to leave their better judgments or their common senses behind.

Peer pressure can be extremely strong and hard to get rid of. Experiments have shown how peer pressure can influence someone to change her/ his mind from what she/ he knows for sure is a correct answer to the incorrect answer——just because everyone else gives the incorrect answer! That holds true for people of any age in peer pressure situations.

It can be hard to walk away from peer pressure, but it can be done. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and wrong can help you know the right thing to do. Inner strength and self- confidence can help you stand firm, walk away and resist doing something when you know better.

  51. What is the passage mainly about ?

  A. Peers have a good effect

  B. Children give in to peer pressure

  C. Peer pressure is hard to resist

  D. Peer pressure

  52. The underlined word “shoplift” in Paragraph Three probably means “__________”.

  A. do some shopping

  B. carry goods for shops

  C. steal in shops

  D. take the lift upstairs in shops

  53. The writer will not agree that ____.

  A. only children change their correct answers to incorrect ones because of peer pressure.

  B. peers have an effect on one another

  C. Peer pressure can be got rid of

  D. Peers will believe in themselves if there are other peers who agree with them

  54. The writer intends to _________ by writing the passage.

  A. tell people to follow other’s opinions

  B. warn people to stay away from their peers.

  C. tell it is hard to walk away form per pressure.

  D. persuade people to do the right thing regardless of peer pressure.

  55. All of the following questions are answered in the passage except ___________.

  A. What does a peer mean ?

  B. Why do young people have extremely strong peer pressure?

  C. How do peer pressure influence our judgment?

  D. How does peers influence each other ?
