  第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分分)

Was he dreaming? David Ewart saw a red ball of fire. He shout out of a deep sleep and heard his ten-year-old daughter, Heather, screaming. Ewart jumped out of bed on the second floor of his home. Downstairs he heard loud popping noises, glass bulbs, furniture, appliances exploding as fire consumed them.

Three hundred and fifty people, including friends and family members, had attended Ewart’s annual Christmas party at his home in Valencia, California. David was a giver. They all enjoyed themselves. After the party, he and his 77-year-old mother, Esther, put out the candles—all but one, missed and left burning on a holiday paper tablecloth.

Now, as Ewart started down the hall to alert his parents and three children, he said a silent prayer: God, if it is your will, save us. The heat was hellish(地狱般的). But then he felt a hand on his shoulder—and something that was not quite a voice guiding him, giving him the direction: the bedroom window.

He kicked out the window screen and told Heather to jump onto the patio(院子) cover, crawl to the edge and drop to the ground, the feet below. Next he headed for his two sons, Jonathan, 13, and Michael, 15, who were screaming with pain. David led Jonathan to the window. He returned for Michael, who was now helping his grandparents, trapped in their room behind a jammed door. Michael threw himself against it and finally burst through. David guided his mother, then Michael, to safety.

Only his father remained. The 81-year-old’s face was badly burned. He lost his footing and fell. David took his hand and helped him to the window. Too weak to hold on, his father rolled off the patio cover to the ground.

Finally,David escaped. Second later, the second floor exploded, yet all the while, he felt he was being led, under protection. The family survived and firefighters said they were mystified(迷惑) as to how the family survived. David Ewart was not.

A little over a year ago I began training to swim the English Channel this September. I would be 58 years old then. My friends thought I had lost my mind; my wife didn’t think I was crazy but she was somewhat worried. The question I was asked over and over was this: why?

When a student reporter at Indiana recently asked me this question, I said, “First, let me ask you a question. What are your plans for this summer?” He replied that he was going to work in a supermarket. I didn’t have to say more, he understood my point. A challenge and something of an adventure are welcome whether you are 20 or 58, and preparing to swim the Channel is far better than working in a supermarket, especially when you have a choice.

The Channel has always been the greatest challenge to swimmers; a test of ability, endurance(耐力),luck, and even bravery. It is this challenge that attracts about 100 swimmers a year, who are willing to spend time, effort, and money trying it .

I am training hard—swimming 7 and a half miles a day. Prior to that time I also kept physically fit by training moderately hard. Once I set up a goal, I won’t give it up easily. And this swim has long been a goal. I have a feeling I will be mentally ready and won’t do as one Channel swimmer did a few years ago. He trained hard for a couple of years, made the arrangements and even went to England weeks early to train in the Channel before his attempt. The great day came, and he started swimming toward France. After swimming only one hour, he got out of the water and climbed aboard the boat, saying that he suddenly had lost the desire to swim the Channel.

On the other hand there was the young girl who was attempting to finish her swim when the ocean got through. She was having a tough time with the rough and cold water, when her trainer shouted to her from the boat he thought she should give up and get out of the water. She shouted back, “I’m doing the swimming, and I’ll decide when to get out.” She made it.

  51. The underlined phrase: lost my mind means____________________.

  A. been mad

  B. lost my heart

  C. lost my head

  D. lost my brains

  52. Why did the writer of the passage decided to swim the Channel?

  A. Because he has the character of challenging adventures.

  B. Because he thinks he can won people’s respect after he succeed in swimming.

  C. Because he likes swimming.

  D. Because he is sure of his luck and bravery.

  53. From the fourth paragraph, we can see that the writer himself is ____.

  A. a brave man.

  B. a rich man

  C. a weak man

  D. a strong-will man

  54. From the two examples we can see that?

  A. Only those who are brave enough can succeed. B. Only those who want to show off can succeed.

  C. Only those who can swim well can succeed. D. Neither of the two succeeded.

  55. What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph?

  A. I am going out.

  B. I will go on.

  C. I have decided to get out of water.

  D. I am sure I will succeed!

  D

According to the dictionary definition of “create”, ordinary people are creative every day. To create means “to bring into being, to cause to exist”—something each of us does daily.

We are creative whenever we look at or think about something in a new way. First this involves an awareness of our surroundings. It means using all of our senses to know our world. This may be as simple as being aware of color and texture(质地),as well as taste, when we plan a meal. Above all, it is the ability to notice things others might miss.

A second part of creativity is an ability to see relationships among things. If we believe the expression “there is nothing new under the sun”, the creativity is remaking or recombining the old in new ways. For example, we might do this by finding a more effective way to study or a better way to arrange our furniture, or we might make a new combination of camera lenses and filters to create an unusual photograph.

A third part of creativity is the courage and drive to make use of your new ideas, to apply them to achieve some new results. To think up a new idea is one thing, to put the idea to work is another.

These three parts of creativity are involved in all the great works of genius, but they are also involved in our day-to-day activities.

  56. Which of the following activities isn’t a creative one according to the passage?

  A. To prepare a meal.

  B. To arrange the furniture in a special way.

  C. To buy some books from a bookstore.

  D. To “write” a letter with a computer.

  57. “There’s nothing new under the sun” (Para. 3) really implies that .

  A. we can seldom create new things

  B. a new thing is only a tale

  C. a new thing can only be created at the basis of original things

  D. we can hardly see really new things in the world

  58. What does the author think about the relationship between a new thought and its being put into practice?

  A. It’s more difficult to create a new thought than to put it into practice.

  B. To find a new thought will definitely lead to the production of a new thing.

  C. One can come up with a new thought, but may not put it into practice.

D.A man with an excellent ability of practice can easily become an inventor.

59.The best title of the passage is “ ”.

  A. How to Develop One’s Creativity

  B. What Is Creativity?

  C. The Importance of Creativity

  D. Creativity—a Not Faraway Thing

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.

But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.

  60

Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.

For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread.

  61

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.

If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

  63

Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else.

  64

At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.

It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.

  A. It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

  B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.

  C. Everyone was new to the network once.

  D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.

  E. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

  F. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.

  G. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.
