  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并

  在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

It was unusually quiet in the emergency room on December 25.

I didn't think there would be any patients, sighing about having to work on Christmas. Just then five

bodies showed up at my desk,

a pale woman and four small children

"Are you all sick?" I asked doubtfully.

"Yes," she said weakly and lowered her head

But when it came to descriptions of their presenting problems, things got a little

  puzzling.

Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren't accompanied

by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still.

Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected The mother

complained of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.

Something was wrong, but I didn't say anything but explained that it might be a

little while before a doctor saw her.

  She responded,

"Take your time; it's warm in

  here. "

I checked the chart after the admitting clerk had finished registering the family.

  No

  address-they were homeless.

  The waiting room was warm.

I looked out at the family huddled (挤) by the Christmas tree.

  The littlest one

  was watching TV.

The oldest one was looking at the decorations on the Christmas tree.

I went back ,to the nurses' station and mentioned we had a homeless family in the

  waiting room

The nurses, complaining about working Christmas, turned to compassion

for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas.

  The team went into action,

  much as

we do when there's a medical emergency.

But this one was a Christmas emergency.

We were all offered a free meal in the hospital cafeteria on Christmas Day,

  so we

fetched that meal and prepared a banquet (盛宴) for our Christmas guests.

  Our team

worked to meet the needs of a family who just wanted to be warm on Christmas Day.

Later, as the family walked to the door to leave, the four-year-old came running

  back,

gave me a hug and whispered,

"Thanks for being our angels today. "

  56.

From the descriptions of the family's presenting problems the author learned that_______.

  A.

one of the children had a language problem

  B.

only one of the children had bitter earaches

  C.

the mother caught a bad cold

  D.

  the whole family pretended illness

  57.

The author made sure that the family were homeless by______.

  A:

  asking them some questions

  B.

  checking their registered information

  C.

  observing their abnormal body language

  D.

listening to their descriptions of problems

  58.

After knowing about the homeless family, the nurses _

  A. offered a television to them

  B.

bought a lot of presents for them

  C.

prepared a beautiful Christmas tree for them

  D.

worked together to let them enjoy a CMstmas feast

  59.

What's the best title of the text?

  A

  Christmas Emergency

  B.

  Christmas Guests

  C.

  A Poor Family

  D.

If you thought it was cold where you are at the moment,

then a visit to the Russian

village of Oymyakon might just change your mind.

With the average temperature for January standing at -50C, it is no wonder the

village is the coldest inhabited settlement in the world.

Known as the 'Pole of Cold', the coldest temperature recorded in Oymyakon was -71.2 C, which is the lowest

recorded temperature for any inhabited location on earth.

Ironically, Oymyakon actually means 'non-freezing water

  due to a nearby hot

  spring.

Most homes- in Oymyakon still burn coal and wood for heat and enjoy few

  modern conveniences.

Nothing grows there so people eat reindeer (驯鹿) meat and horse meat.

A single shop provides the town's bare necessities and the locals work as reindeer-breeders,

  hunters and ice-fisherman。

The village is located around 750 metres above sea level and the length of a day

varies from 3 hours in December t0 21 hours in the summer.

  And despite its terrible

  winters,

  in June,

July and August temperatures over 30 c are not uncommon

  .

There are few modern conveniences in the village - with many buildings still

having outdoor toilets and most people still burn coal and wood for heat.

  When coal

deliveries are irregular, the power station starts burning wood.

  If the power ceases,

the town shuts down in about five hours,

and the pipes freeze and crack.

Daily problems that come with living in Oymyakon include pen ink freezing,

glasses freezing to people's faces and batteries losing power.

  Locals are said to leave

their cars running all day for fear of not being able to restart them

Even if there was coverage for mobile phone reception, the phones themselves

would not work in such cold conditions.

Another problem caused by the frozen temperatures is burying dead bodies,

  which

can take anything up to three days.

  64.

According to the text, Oymyakon ______.

  A

is the coldest location on the earth

  B.

has got frozen water all over the year

  C.

gets its name because of a nearby hot spring

  D.

can enjoy quite a few modern conveniences

  65.

Mobile phones would not work in Oymyakon because ______.

  A.

the batteries are of poor quality

  B.

the extreme coldness makes them lose power

  C.

there was no coverage for phone reception

  D.

the phone reception is too far away to receive the signals

  66.

We can learn from the text that _____.

  A.

daily problems usually accompany the locals

  B.

the town often stops working because of no coal delivery

  C.

locals only live on reindeer meat and horse meat

  D.

locals have no awareness of saving their resources

  D

"Plants were expected to get larger with increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but changes in temperature, humidity (湿度) and nutrient availability seem to have trumped the benefits of increased carbon dioxide," said researchers from

  the National University of Singapore

45 percent of the species studied now reach smaller adult sizes than they did in the past. The researchers pointed out that warmer temperatures and changing habitats, caused by climate change, are possible reasons for the shrinking of creatures.

"We do not yet know the exact mechanisms (机制) involved, or why some organisms are getting smaller while others are unaffected," the researchers said. "Until we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we can't yet quantify. "

The change was big in cold-blooded animals. Only two decades of warmer

temperatures were enough to make creatures smaller.

An increase of only lC caused nearly a 10 percent increase in metabolism(新陈代谢).

Greater use of energy resulted in tiny tortoises and little lizards.

  Fish are smaller now too.

Though overfishing has played a part in reducing numbers, experiments show that warmer temperatures also stop fish growing.

Warm-blooded animals weren't immune (兔疫) from the size change caused by climate change. Many birds are now smaller.

  Red deer are weaker.

And polar bears are smaller, compared with historical records.

This isn't the first time that has happened in Earth's history.

55 million years ago, a warming event similar to the current climate change caused bees, spiders and ants to shrink by 50 t0 75 percent over several thousand years. That event happened over a longer time than the current climate change.

The speed of modern climate change could mean organisms may not respond or adapt quickly enough,

especially those with long generation times.

  So,

it is likely that more negative influences of climate change will be shown in the future.

  67.

What does the text mainly talk about?

  A.

  Why some species become smaller.

  B.

How climate changes in Earth's history.

  C.

Climate change has many negative effects.

  D.

Species are becoming smaller as climate gets warmer.

  68.

What does the underlined word "trumped" in paragraph l mean?

  A beaten

  B. gained

  C. destroyed

  D. lost

  69.

Researchers from the National University of Singapore believe that_____.

  A

they have found the exact causes for creatures getting smaller

  B

increase in energy use can lead to creatures getting smaller

  C.

climate change has more negative effects on warm-blooded animals

  D.

all the animals on the earth have become smaller

  70.

What does the auther feel about the climate change?

  A Worried

  B Optimistic

  C. Disappointed

  D. Shameful

  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多途选项。

Most drinks stating that they are fruit-flavored(水果口味)contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit,

  according to a study carried

  by the British Food Commission

“Shoppers need to check the labels(标签)before buying drinks," said Food

Commission spokesperson Ian Toke love . "Food production is highly competitive.

71 It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked.”

Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberry-flavored products sold in

  stores.

  72

0f the 28 products, eleven of them did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit and the rest contain no fruit at all.

  In

addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.

73 Let's take jam as an example.

Some strawberry-flavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial

  colors,

flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.

  7 4

Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought

Under current UK law, food packages do not have .to distinguish between natural and

  artificial flavoring.

"Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface

of the packet with pictures of strawberries is misleading.

  75 Unfortunately, it is

also legal and widespread," Tokelove said

"It's time to take measures to protect the consumers' rights.”

  A

The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.

  B.

Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.

  C

They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all

  D.

If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.

  E.

It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products

  F.

Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at al1.

  G. The Food commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging

  Dear David,

I’m very glad to receive your email. I’m willing to tell you about how we Chinese celebrate the Spring Festival. The day just before the lunar New Year, every family will paste the Spring Festival couplets on the door and make preparations for making dumplings. On New Year’s Eve, family members sit together, enjoying the delicious dumplings as well as appreciating the Spring Festival gala. When the New Year bell rings, all the people will cheer and firecrakers are set off. With the New Year’s Day coming, people will dress up and go out to visit friends and relatives to pay New Year's call each other. Everywhere is filled with joy.

Could you please drop me a line talking about how westerners celebrate the New Year?
