  Text 1

M: We planned to go to the beach after class. Want to come?

W: I'd love to. But Professor Jones wants to speak to me.

  Text 2

W: Aren't you cold? Why aren't you wearing a jacket?

M: I slept late this morning, so I ran out of the house without listening to the weather report.

  Text 3

W: Have you had a busy day at the office?

M: Yes, sorry I'm late. I didn't catch the bus so Peter offered me a lift. But

the highway was closed because of an accident.

  Text 4

M: Look, Sandra, I got this really nice postcard from my aunt.

W: Oh, what a pretty village! Is it in the mountains?

M: Yes. But you can't see them in the picture.

W: Perhaps they're behind those tall trees.

  Text 5

M: Excuse me, I'm looking for the bar, please.

W: It's inside the restaurant next to the performance stage. Turn left out of the lift, and the bar is just there, on your right.

  Text 6

M: Is this desk available? I need to find some work space.

W: Let me think. That's Terry's spot but I think he's working at home today.

M: That's where Terry sits? Then I can't work there. I just saw him in the parking lot.

W: Oh, that's right. Terry's working at home on Monday and Wednesday this week—his schedule's always changing and I can never keep track of it. But

why don't you try over where Gordon sits? There's an extra desk over there.

  Text 7

W: Peter, you're learning to drive, aren't you? Do you go to the AA Driving School?

M: Actually it's called the ABC Driving School.

  W: Is it expensive?

M: I've had ten lessons already and each one is 14 pounds.

W: I see. And is the teacher's car new?

M: Yes, and it's not a big car so parking is easy.

W: When are you going to take your driving test?

M: I failed it last week.

W: Did you hit something or...

M: The traffic lights were red but I didn't see them and I couldn't stop in time.

W: Never mind. You can take the test again. Tell me about your teacher. Is he friendly?

M: He's OK. He's quite young and interesting to talk to.

  Text 8

  W: Chris,

  remember,

at 11:00 this morning you have to call your grandparents. And at 12:00, can you take Fiona to the swimming pool in my car? She's meeting a friend there.

M: OK. I wanted to watch some TV but it can wait.

W: Can you get some stamps too? The post office closes at 1:00, but you'll be there at 12:30 if you go straight from the pool.

  M: OK. Anything else?

W: There are some library books to return, but I'll do that on Monday. Can you wash the car? If you do that at the garage at 1:00, you'll be back here at lunchtime.

M: All right. So I'll see you at 1:30 and we'll eat then. At 2:00 there's a football match—it's a really important game. After that, can I use the car to visit some friends?

  W: Yes, OK.

  Text 9

M: So how were your schooldays when you were a child, Joan?

W: Well, from seven to twelve I went to a school in Belgium.

  M: In Belgium? How come?

W: It was my father's idea. One of his friends was sending his daughter, and

my father wanted to impress his friend so he decided to send me, too.

M: Just to impress a friend? It's hard to believe. So what was it like?

W: We had to get up early and go to church before class. And at mealtimes

we just had to sit silently with our hands folded. And I wasn't allowed to

speak English at all. I had to learn French but nobody taught me. I just

had to sit in the lessons and try to understand.

M: It's awful for a child of seven!

W: And they were terribly strict about manners! I suppose that was one good thing. I had the most beautiful manners when I left.

  A

A fellow speaker from Californ ia named Geri flew to Japan, in her favorite jeans and a casual jacket, to give her first speech. Fourteen hours later, four perfectly dressed Japanese gentlemen greeted her at Narita Airport. Smiling and bowing low, they handed her their business cards. With her bag in one hand, Geri took their cards with the other. She thanked them, glanced briefly at the cards, and put them into her jeans pocket quickly.

When the five of them arrived at the hotel, they invited Geri to tea in the lobby (大厅). While sipping tea, the gentlemen presented her with a small gift which she eagerly opened. She was thrilled with the gift and shouted excitedly, “Oh, it's beautiful!”

At this point, the four Japanese gentlemen stood up and, bowing only very slightly, said “Sayonara” and left immediately. Poor Geri was left astonished. What did she do wrong?

Everything! Her jeans were the first gaffe. Even if you're coming off a bicycle in Japan, you do not meet clients(客人) casually dressed. The second mistake was Geri's handling of

their business cards rudely. In Japan, the business card is one of the most important communicative tools. It is always presented and accepted respectfully with both hands. However, Geri put their cards away much too quickly. In Japan, people use business cards as a conversation starter. You chat about each other's cards and work and do not put theirs away until they gently and respectfully place yours in safekeeping. Putting it carelessly into her jeans pocket was the ultimate disrespect.

Then, then fourth honor of honors was that Geri should not have opened the gift in front of her clients. In a land where saving face is critical, it would be embarrassing to discover the gift they gave was not as nice as the one they received. What is worse, Geri hadn't even given them a gift!

21.In the four Japanese gentlemen's eyes, Geri took their cards ________.

  A.excitedly B.embarrassingly

  C.politely

  D.disrespectfully

The second mistake was Geri's handling of their business cards rudely.

22.Why did the four Japanese gentlemen leave Geri suddenly?

A.Because they couldn't bear Geri's behavior any longer.

B.Because they had finished the task.

C.Because Geri had something more important to do.

  D.Because Geri felt embarrassed.

23.What does the underlined word “gaffe” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

  A.ignorance

  B.sadness

  C.mistake

  D.carelessness

What did she do wrong?

24.What lesson can we draw from this story?

  A.Honesty is the best policy.

B.Think twice before you take any action.

C.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

D.Don't claim to know what you don't know.

  B

Life is to be enjoyed. There's no point in giving up something you enjoy unless you get something back that's even better. When people eat more healthfully, exercise, quit smoking, and manage stress better, they find that they feel so much better that it reconstructs the reason for making these changes from fear of dying to joy of living. The latest studies show that when you exercise and eat right:

YOUR BRAIN receives more blood flow and oxygen, so you become smarter, think more clearly, have more energy, and need less sleep. Two studies showed that just walking for three hours per week for only three months caused so many new neurons (神经细胞) to grow that it actually increased the size of people's brains!

YOUR FACE receives more blood flow, so your skin glows more and wrinkles less. You look

younger and more attractive. In contrast, and unhealthy diet, chronic emotional stress and smoking reduce blood flow to your face so you age more quickly. Smoking accelerates aging because nicotine causes your arteries(动脉) to narrow down, which decreases blood flow to your face and makes it wrinkle earlier. This is why smokers look years older than they really are.

YOUR GENES change. In May, a study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showing that changing your lifestyle changes your genes.

  YOUR TELOMERES(染色体端粒)

get longer. Telomeres are the ends of our chromosomes(染色体) that control

how long we live. As telomeres become shorter, then cells age more quickly, thus shortening your life.

  Besides, one of the

most interesting findings in the study was that the mothers' awareness of stress was more important than what was really occurring in their lives. The researchers gave the women a questionnaire and asked them to rate on a threepoint scale how stressed they felt each day, and how out of control their lives felt to them. The women who were aware that they were under heavy stress had significantly shortened and damaged telomeres compared with those who felt more relaxed. On the contrary, some of the women who felt relaxed despite raising a disabled child had more normalappearing telomeres.

In other words, if you feel stressed, you are stressed; if you feel fine, you are fine.

25.Which of the following are good for lengthening one's life, according to the passage?

  ①eat healthy food

  ②drink plenty of water

  ③take exercise

  ④get up early

  ⑤go to sleep early

  ⑥release one's stress

  A.

  B.

  C.

  D.

When people eat more healthfully, exercise, quit smoking, and manage stress better, they find that they feel so much better that...

26.The underlined words “your skin glows” in Paragraph 3 are closest in meaning to ________.

A.your skin becomes white as there is plenty of sunshine

B.your skin becomes smooth as there is much blood in it

C.your skin looks pink as you are healthy

D.your skin becomes soft as you exercise enough

You look younger and more attractive.

27.In the author's opinion, when you exercise and eat right, you will experience some changes EXCEPT ________.

  A.brains becoming cleverer

  B.faces having fewer wrinkles

  C.arteries turning narrower

  D.genes being changed

Smoking accelerates aging because nicotine causes your arteries(动脉) to narrow down,可知是吸烟这种不健康的习惯会让动脉血管变窄,所以正确答案为C。

28.The best title for the passage would be________.

  A.Eat better, live better

  B.Feel better, live longer

  C.Less stress, fewer diseases

  D.Smoke more, age sooner

In other words, if you feel stressed, you are stressed; if you feel fine, you are fine. C

When Peng Liyuan stepped off the plane in Moscow, the whole world wanted to know who dressed the elegant first lady. The reporter released the secretMa Ke.

Peng Liyuan has been wearing Ma Ke's designs for more than a decade, a fact that was only highlighted recently when she was on her first state visit, accompanying her husband President Xi Jinping. The elegant and attractive Peng, formerly a popular singer, has been compared with the US' first lady Michelle Obama and France's Carla BruniSarkozy, since stepping off the airplane in Moscow on March 22. Suddenly, everyone was curious to know more about the first lady's wardrobe.

Even so, Ma prefers a lowkey approach. “If you eat a tasty egg why would you want to see the hen?” she says of all the media attention.

Ma's relationship with Peng began 10 years ago after a concert in Guangzhou when a reporter told Peng she knew the designer behind the label Exception de Mixmind. Peng asked for an introduction because she was a fan of Ma's designs and had been wearing them for years. The two naturally became friends. Ma says: “The painting reflects the painter, and clothes reflect both the designer and the wearer. Someone desires fame and wealth, or love and sympathy; what you have in your heart is reflected in the design. Those who don't share my philosophy won't buy my clothes. Peng is a caring person, devoted to charity and environmental protection, which is exactly what I'm doing now.”

However, regardless of the brand, Peng's support of Chinese labels has surprised millions of Chinese who favor foreign fashion brands.

“Instead she presented a vision of Chinese fashion, desiring to bring Chinese designers to the world stage,” says a western designer.

The first lady's doublebreasted coat and her black leather handbag aren't available at any of Exception's shops, though Exception's physical stores do have seen a rising number of visitors.

  29.The passage mainly discusses ________.

A.the designer of the first lady Peng Liyuan's dress, Ma Ke

B.the friendship between Peng Liyuan and her designer

C.Peng Liyuan's clothes on her first state visit

D.the reactions to Peng Liyuan's first visit to Moscow

The reporter released the secret-Ma Ke.

30.In the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 Ma Ke mentioned “an egg and the hen” to show ________.

A.it is hard to explain “Which came first, the egg or the hen?”

B.paying such great attention to her was unnecessary

C.the outcome was more important than the process

D.her dissatisfaction with the media attention on her dress

根据文中Ma prefers a lowkey approach.

31.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Peng wears the dress designed by a Chinese designer probably to support Chinese brands.

B.Many citizens found Peng Liyuan's choice quite unexpected.

C.Black leather handbags like Peng's are widely sold in bag stores in big cities.

D.After Peng Liyuan's visit to Moscow Ma Ke's clothes became more popular.

The first lady's doublebreasted coat and her black leather handbag aren't available at any of Exception's shops,可知,C选项内容错误。

  D

Do you know the openair art gallery in London's Blackall Street? Probably not. Not many

Londoners know it either, but Henri does and he is willing to show it to you.

Henri used to sleep in parks until he met a charity(慈善机构) that helps homeless people get

back on their feet by becoming tour guides.

Rather than show traditional London sights, “Unseen Tours” take_people_off_the_beaten_track. Henri has been teaching tourists about the history and architecture of Shoreditch, where he slept on public benches for three years.

When he felt separated from the society, contact with the volunteer network “The Sock Mob” gave Henri hope. “Not everyone just looked down on me,” he said. The tours aren't the only actions trying to help those who have suffered a misfortune to stand tall again.

An innovative(创新的) college for homeless people in London, the first of its kind in the country, is attracting hundreds of students. The Recovery College, set up by St Mungo's charity, is providing courses designed to improve technical skills and life skills.

According to Andy Williams, who helps to organize the college, the most popular courses have proved to be about raising selfconfidence and developing selfpride.

Steve, now in his 50s, told a reporter how much of a difference it makes to “have a bit of confidence”. He had difficulty learning to read and had to leave school when he was 12. Because Steve's problem was not recognized at the time, he was “seen to be unable to read or write”, and suffered with depression and alcohol addiction. He says the status of “student” is itself important for people who are used to being treated as outcasts(被遗弃者)

Some charities aim not only to help the homeless become independent but also to make them popular. The Homeless World Cup started ten years ago. Today the tournament draws teams from 48 countries made up of playersmen and womenwho are, or have been, living in the streets.

It gives them a chance to become football heroes.

32.The underlined part “take people off the beaten track” means “take people to ________.”

  A.famous galleries

A.By training them to be guides.

34.The purpose of the Homeless World Cup is to help the homeless people ________.

  B.improve life skills

  C.gain selfconfidence

  D.find proper jobs

Some charities aim not only to help the homeless become independent but also to make them

  Family Values

To understand a nation, you should first get to know its minimum unitfamily. __36__

In the US, upon reaching an appropriate age (usually between 18 and 21 years),

children are encouraged, but not forced, to “leave the nest” and begin an independent life. __37__ Parents do not arrange marriages for their children, nor do children usually ask permission of their parents to get married. Young adults meet their future spouses (配偶) through other friends, at jobs, and in organizations and religious institutions. Although children choose their own spouses, they still hope their parents will approve of their choices.

Parents feel that children should make major life decisions by themselves in many families. A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to choose another job. __38__

A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father's business because of a fear that he will lose his independence in his father's workplace. This independence from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other. Strong love between parents and children is universal and this is no exception in the American family.

__39__ It is not like we Chinese. Parents are rulers and masters. We Chinese love our parents with fear and total respect. In America, children always have their own opinions and even can talk about some sensitive problems with their parents, like family financial situation, the relationship between mother and father, and even sex.

__40__ Therefore, it is contrary that, on one hand, Americans admire independence and equality that they don't want to make sacrifice to make up a family, but on the other hand, Americans think highly of family in their value system.

A.In the American family, children and parents are equal.

B.It can reflect the traditional values and customs of a nation.

C.When it comes to big problems, children do not have to always follow their parents' ways.

D.After children leave home, they often find social relationship and financial support outside the

  family.

E.Although Americans pay much attention to independence and equality, they don't believe in making sacrifice.

F.Sometimes children do precisely the opposite of what their parents wish in order to declare their independence.

G.Many of them are expected to leave what could be life's most important decisionmarriagealmost entirely up to luck.
