Many readers of young adult books are not,in fact, young adults.According to a new study,55% of buyers of books designated for children aged 12 to 17 are actually age 18 or older and buyers between the ages of 30 and 44 account for the largest percentage of young adult sales.

The adults are not purchasing the books for others, the study found;78% of the adults who reported buying young adult titles said they were purchasing the books to read themselves.

“The investigation into who is reading young adult books began when we noticed a disparity between the number of young adult e-books being purchased and the relatively low number of kids who claim to read e-books,” said Kelly Gallagher, head of the research.“The extent and age breakout of adult consumers of these works was surprising. And while the trend is influenced to some extent by the popularity of ‘The Hunger Games’,our data shows it’s a much larger phenomenon than readership of this single series.”

A spokesperson for Scholastic estimated that half of the 50 million buyers of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling young-adult series,“The Hunger Games”,are adults.A spokesperson for HarperCollins, publisher of Veronica Roth’s bestselling “Divergent” series, also said that 50% of the series’ readers were older than 25,based on information on the book-referral(书籍推荐的) website,GoodReads.com.

“Interestingly enough, more teens are still reading in paper pattern, but what we’re finding is that the e-book sales are really the result of 20-to 65-year-olds or over,” HarperCollins Children’s Books publisher and president,Susan Katz, told The Times in July.“A lot of our books are read by adults. We’re getting a lot of comments on our own sites where we can see there’s a lot of enthusiasm beyond just teenagers.”

People have been painting pictures for at least 30,000 years. The earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animals. They used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill.Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. No one knows why they were painted there.Perhaps the painters thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals.Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures.

About 5,000 years ago the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as a kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet.

The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture-writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures are like the modern comic strip (连环漫画) stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. But,for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it.

By the year 1,000 BC,people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign,or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letter of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and Roman alphabet is now used all over the world.

These days,we can write down a story,or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds:drawings, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find them everywhere:in books and newspapers,in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work.Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can make a story much more interesting.

Some people succeed in unbelievable ways.

Roussel was orphaned at the age of eight and went to live with his grandfather. He built on the music he had learned from his mother, entertaining himself by reading through the family music collection and playing his favorite songs on the piano.

Three years later,Roussel’s grandfather died, and his aunt adopted him.Her husband arranged for young Albert to take regular piano lessons.Summer vacations at a Belgian seaside resort added a second love to his life—the sea.He studied to be a naval cadet (海军学员),but still made time to study music.

In the French Navy, while he served on a warship based at Cherbourg,he and two friends found the time to play the music of Beethoven and other composers (作曲家).Roussel also began composing. At the Church of the Trinity in Cherbourg on Christmas Day 1892,he had his first performance as a composer.

That success encouraged Roussel to write a wedding march, and one of his fellow offices offered to show it to a well-known conductor (指挥家),Edouard Colonne. When Roussel’s friend returned with the manuscript(手稿),he reported that Colonne had advised Roussel to give up his naval career and devote his life to music.

Not long afterwards,at the age of 25,Roussel did just that.He applied characters that he had developed in the navy to his composing and became a major force in twentieth century French music. As for Edouard Colonne’s inspiring advice that Roussel devote his life to music,Roussel’s navy friend later admitted that he had made it up and that he had never even shown Roussel’s manuscript to the conductor.

39.Which of the following shows the right order of the story?

a.Roussel gave up his naval career.

b.Roussel was adopted by his aunt.

c.Roussel read through the family music collection.

d.Roussel had his first performance as a composer in Cherbourg.

  A.c,b,d,a B.b,c,d,a

  C.b,c,a,d D.c,b,a,d

  答案:A

40.What did played the most important part in Roussel’s final success.

A.his mother B.the husband of his aunt

  C.his navy friend D.Edouard Colonne

  答案:C

B.Roussel read through the family music collection in his grandfather’s

C.Colonne advised Roussel to give up his naval career and devote his life to music

42.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

A.A clever musician B.A white lie

C.A helpful conductor D.A great manuscript

  D

Leadership is the most significant word in today’s competitive business environment because it directs the manager of a business to focus inward on their personal abilities and style.Experts on leadership will quickly point out that“how things get done”influences the success of the outcomes and indicates a right way and a wrong way to do things. When a noted leader on the art of management,Peter Drucker, coined the phrase“Management is doing things right;leadership is doing the right things,”he was seeking to clarify the distinctions he associates with the terms.

When Stephen Covey, founder and director of the Leadership Institute, explored leadership styles in the past decade,he focused on the habits of a great number of highly effective individuals. His Seven Habits of Highly Effective People became a popular bestseller very quickly. His ideas forced a reexamination of the early leadership example, which centered on the feature that was found in the character ethic (道德) and the personality ethic. The former ethic suggested success was founded on modesty, loyalty, courage, patience, and so on.The personality ethic suggested it was one’s attitude, not behavior, that inspired success, and this ethic was founded on a belief of positive mental attitude. In contrast to each of these ideas,Covey advocates that leaders need to understand universal principles of effectiveness, and he highlights how vital it is for leaders to first personally manage themselves if they are to enjoy any hope of outstanding success in their work environments;to achieve a desired vision for your business,it is essential that you have a personal vision of where you are headed and what you value.Business leadership means that managers need to“put first things first,” which implies that before leading others, you need to be clear on your own values, abilities, and strengths and be seen as trustworthy.

43.What does Peter Drucker’s phrase infer?

A.Leaders should be good at making right decisions.

B.Leaders should be good at doing things right.

C.Leaders should be good at ignoring distinctions.

D.Leaders should be skilled in predicting future.

  答案:A

44.Under what condition are people likely to succeed,in terms of what the personality ethic suggests?

A.When people have little determination, they will be successful.

B.When people have good behavior, they will gain success.

C.If people have positive mental attitude, they are likely to succeed.

D.If people have negative mental attitude, they are certain to succeed.

根据第二段中的 “The personality ethic suggested it was one’s attitude, not behavior, that inspired success, and this ethic was founded on a belief of positive mental attitude.”

45.How can leaders enjoy outstanding success in their work environments, according to Stephen Covey?

A.Firstly they have to think highly of themselves.

B.They are supposed to benefit themselves.

  C.They can not adjust themselves.

  D.First they must manage themselves.

根据第二段中斯蒂芬·科维所强调的内容,尤其是 “In contrast to each of these ideas,Covey advocates that leaders need to understand universal principles of effectiveness, and he highlights how vital it is for leaders to first personally manage themselves if they are to enjoy any hope of outstanding success in their work environments” 一句可知,他认为要在商务上获得成功,首先要管理好自己。

  答案:A

A new study suggests you are where you live—at least in terms of weight.

A rural address could be a risk factor for being overweight, according to the research published in the fall issue of the Journal of Rural Health.

The study, led by researchers at the University of Kansas, analyzed data from the National Center for Health Statistics. They said it is the first in more than 30 years to use actual measurements of height and weight, rather than self-reported data, which can be unreliable.

About 70 million Americans,or 23% of the population, live in rural areas. The researchers found that 39.6% of them are obese(肥胖的),while 33.4% of urban residents were obese.Including overweight people as well, the comparative totals were 70.8% and 67.1%,the study said.

The factors at work could be the “cultural diet” of rural America,as well as the isolation(隔离) that often exists, said the lead researcher,Christie Befort, assistant professor of preventive medicine and public health at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

That diet includes “rich, homemade foods” with lots of meat and desserts, she said.Rural Americans typically consume more fats than their urban counterparts, the study found.

Another factor could be the increased mechanization(机械化) of farm work,Befort said.Older generations showed less difference in weight than younger ones—older farmers would have put in more physical labor, she said.

“Although some intervention(介入) research has begun to address obesity among rural adults and families, great attention needs to be focused on widespread of effective programs to rural areas, which contain some of the largest medically underserved communities in the nation,” the researchers said.

47.What can we know from the third paragraph?

A.The measurement of height and weight has nothing to do with the cause of obesity.

B.Results in the past years can be inaccurate as they haven’t adopted actual measurements.

C.It is the first time in thirty years to conduct research into the cause of obesity.

D.Researchers didn’t know the relations between obesity and height in the past years.

48.How many rural Americans have the problems of obesity?

  A.304,347,826. B.23,380,000.

  C.27,720,000. D.16,553,040.

49.What contributes to the rural residents’ obesity problem?

  A.Rich diet. B.More physical labor.

C.Good medical service. D.Separation from the city.

  答案:A

故选A项。

50.What does the underlined phrase mean in the passage?

  A.Being effective. B.During the work.

C.Waiting to do something. D.Taking place.

I ordered a new consumer product on New Year’s Day.The order was so exciting that I felt it was going to enable me to stay organized and stylish. Then I went to the store and made the purchase. They made it pretty difficult because of a new process that had just been put in place.I went to the store with my cash in hand hoping to just give it to someone to get my new product, but I had to work pretty hard to get someone to let me buy it.

Two weeks later,a new accessory (附件) became available for my product.I decided to go and procure this new accessory on my birthday. However, they didn’t have any and nobody could answer my questions, and they only had a number system before you could talk to anyone. So I spent an hour of my birthday sitting around waiting to be told that I couldn’t be helped.I’m a customer that just wanted to buy the product, and then when I wanted to keep giving them money for my shiny new product, they still weren’t interested.

The only way I was told to get what I needed was to call someone and they could help.

I knew it would be an experience that would require much patience,so I waited a week and a half to make that call.Today was the day.I was also reminded today that sometimes things would just be comically bad from beginning to end.

After two specialists and one hour and twelve minutes,I got the information I needed.

This terrible experience isn’t quite over yet,but it’s definitely reached the comical stage. So I’m laughing and thinking about what lesson I should learn from this situation.

Besides,I wish there would not be too many students in a class.I’d also like to know how much I have to pay for the course and whether accommodation is included.Would there be host family or university dormitory?
