Every once in a while, the sub-zero temperatures seal a 3 windows shut. “No,but I’ll buy them,” she said. “Pay it forward and all that.”

Completely puzzled,I charged her as 10 ,and when the next customer arrived at the window I explained what had just happened. I watched as his 11 changed—first angry to be out in the cold, then 12 at the random act of kindness, and finally, delighted by his 13 .

“I suppose I’ll pay for the next order then,” he replied, nodding and waving at the impatient driver 14 him. He 15 over the cash and received his prepaid hot drink.

The trend continued. Customers arrived annoyed, only to leave 16 and pleased. Some were shocked to spend much more than they had expected, 17 others ended up receiving their order for less than half the price.

Five vehicles passed, then ten, then twenty. No one refused to pay. Customers stood at my window 18 a fistful of change to buy drinks for a complete stranger. Cars drove off, honking (鸣笛) and 19 their thanks.

It only takes one customer, one person,to change the entire 20 of traffic. It only takes one moment, one smile,to warm up even the coldest of days.

She was a present.?People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.g

I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about herself. There was nothing I could do to make her happy,it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous owner抯. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sat by the fire.a

That抯 why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless. Eventually I couldn抰 hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towa trds a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.

By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking (舔) the four puppies (幼犬) I started to feel sympathy towards them. “We didn’t know what had happened to her,” said the woman at the door. “I took her for a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared.” “She must have tried to come back to them and got lost,?tadded a boy from behind her.

  【科普知识类】

In the crisis of global warming, green technology becomes a critical part in our development. With the increasing use of green technology by different countries, using green technology has become a new trend over the world.

Green technology is a diverse range of products, services, and processes that apply renewable materials and energy sources, dramatically reducing the use of natural resources, and significantly cutting wastes to minimize negative impact on the world. If green technology is said to be able to improve the environment,it does not mean that it creates no pollution or waste. Comparison shall be made between the green technology and the conventional technology to see if the green technology can reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and the release of harmful substances.

One of the best-known examples of green technology would be the solar cell. A solar cell directly converts the energy in light into electrical energy. Generating electricity from solar energy means less consumption of fossil fuels, reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Another simple invention that can be considered green is the reusable water bottle. Reducing plastic waste is great for the environment.

Green technology is not able to improve our environment or solve the problems that we are facing, like global warming in short. What green technology brings us in the short term is inconvenience, high cost, low efficiency and so on. That抯 why people start tor criticize the government for keeping investing in the green technology, and relying on it for solving the problems that we are facing.

Although there are some defects of green technology, everything done should have both positive impacts and negative impacts. Since we are still at a starting stage of developing green technology now, problems like global warming and energy crisis cannot be solved within one or two years. It really requires our determination and effort in improving the situation. Green technology will definitely be the solution that helps us solve those problems and improve our environment.

5.Compared to the conventional technology, the green technology .

A.reduces the cost of living B.causes no pollution

C.is more environmentally friendly D.is more widely used

  6.According to the passage,the solar cell .

A.helps solve both energy crisis and environmental problems

B.produces more power than other methods

C.is as popular as the reusable water bottle

D.proves that green technology is very popular

7.In the last paragraph, the underlined word “defects” can be replaced by “ ”.

  A.shortcomings B.applications C.values D.discoveries

8.According to the passage, the author believes that the green technology .

A.is more important than other technologies B.has a hopeful future

C.is developing fast worldwide D.has improved our environment greatly
