Unlike Britain, the US does not have a national health care service. Most people buy medical insurance to help pay for medical care. The government

only helps pay for some medical care for the old and the people who are on low incomes. The problems of those who cannot afford insurance have become an important political subject.

In Britain, when people are ill, they usually go to a family doctor first. However, people in America sometimes go straight to an expert. Children are usually taken to a doctor who is an expert in the treatment of children. In Britain, if a patient needs to see a specialist doctor, their family doctor will usually recommend a specialist,

which will save more time and money both for the patients

  and the public fund (基金).

  In Britain, doctors

do not go to people's homes when they are ill. People always make appointments to see the doctor in the doctor's office. In a serious situation, people call for an ambulance. In America, hospitals must treat all seriously ill patients, even if they do not have medical insurance. The government will then help pay for some of the cost of the medical care.

16.The majority of Americans pay for medical care ________.

A.through the national health care service

  B.by buying medical insurance

C.with the help of the government

  D.by increasing their income

17.The author implies in Paragraph 2 that ________.

  A.Americans don't trust family doctors

B.family doctors are helpless to the patients

C.he is more in favor of the British medical care service

D.sick children should go to family doctors first

18.In the States, seriously ill patients will ________.

A.be treated if they have an insurance

B.go to see the doctor by making an appointment

  C.receive treatment even without insurance

D.normally go to see an expert for treatment

19.Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?

A.Health Care in the United States and Britain

B.Types of Doctors in the United States

C.Treatment of Sick Children in the United States

D.Medical Insurance in the United States and Britain

  Ⅲ.七选五

Over the last 25 years, British society has changed a great deal—or at least many parts of it have.

  __20__.

Ideas about social class—whether a person is “workingclass” or “middleclass” —are one area in which changes have been extremely slow.

In the past, the workingclass tended to be paid less than middleclass people. The typical working man would collect his wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her “housekeeping”, would go out and squander the rest on beer and betting.

The old style of what a middleclass man did with his money was perhaps nearer the truth. He was and still is inclined to take a longer璽erm view. Not only did he regard buying a house as a most important thing, but he also considered the education of his children as extremely important.

__21__. Only in very few cases did workers have the opportunity (or the educa tion and training) to make such long璽erm plans.

__22e__. In a large number of cases factory workers earn as much as their middleclass supervisors (管理者). Social security and laws to improve century, have made it less necessary than before to worry about “tomorrow”. Workingclass people seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority(自卑感). In fact there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middleclasses to feel slightly ashamed of their position.

__23__.They generally tend to share very similar tastes in music and clothes, they spend their money in having a good time, and save for holidays or longerterm plans when necessary. There seems to be much less difference than in precious generations.

__24__. As long as this gap exists, there will always be a possibility that new conflicts and jealousies will emerge, or rather that the old conflicts will reappear, but between different groups.

A.Nowadays, a great deal has changed

B.Both of these provided him and his family with security

C.As a result, differences in lifestyles and attitudes came into existence

D.However, we still have a wide gap between the wellpaid and the lowpaid

E.In recent years, the workingclass people have begun to design longterm plans

F.In some ways, however, very little has changed, particularly where attitudes are concerned

G.The changes in both lifestyles and attitudes are probably most easily seen among younger people

Growing up is not easy.Sometimes all that is need is someone to rely on.

For many years, she was Mum.My mother was a career woman and has her own problems to take care, but when I needed her, she was always there. Her strength came from anywhere.I don't quite know, somewhere very deep. She was so strong that she would never break down, even while I went to her with all my littleboy problems and shout at her.

Her strength made me stronger and gave to me courage to try things other thought were impossible.A helping hand is always stronger enough to lift you up.

come in“进来”;come at“攻击,冲向”;come about“发生,产生”,均不符合句子的意思。

speak to“和某人说话”;refer to“谈到,提及”;contribute to“导致,引起”;talk to“对……

move in“搬进”;move away“搬走”;move out“搬出”。

camp“露营”;campus“校园”;fight“战斗”。

put sb./sth. in the shade“使某人/物黯然失色”,为固定搭配。shadow“阴影;暗影”;shallow“浅的”;shame“羞愧”。

  13.D 由题干中的“be sympathetic of them”可知look down upon“轻视,瞧不起”符合题意。look forward to“盼望”;think highly of“对……

  III.20.F 21.B 22.A 23.G 24.D
