  Teenagerswhodrinkalcoholareathigherriskofbecomingvictimsofviolence,aCardiffUniversitystudyhasfound.

  AteamfromtheSchoolofDentistry’sViolenceResearchGroupstudieddrinkinghabitsinchildrenaged11~16inEngland.Theyfoundnotonlyalinkbetweendrinkandviolencebutalsothatchildrenwhodrankweremorelikelytobehit,eveniftheyweren’tviolentthemselves.

  Theresearchersarenowcallingformeasurestopreventalcoholmisusetoreduceinjuryrisk.Currentpolicyfocusesonreducingaggressionbutthisresearchshowsthatthereshouldbeequalefforttoreducevictimization.

  Morethan4,000childrenweresurveyedat13schoolsatfourlocalauthoritiesintheNorth,theMidlands,London,andtheSouth.Thestudyfoundthat25%of11­year­oldsweredrinkingmonthlyand3.6%daily,with12.8%admittingtogettingdrunk3to5timesayear.Bytheageof16,40%weredrinkingweeklyand6.2%weredrinkingeveryday.Theresearchalsoshowed22.6%of16­year­oldsweregettingdrunkmorethan21timesayear.

  Thestudy,whichhasjustbeenpublishedintheJournalofAdolescence,foundastronglinkbetweenfrequencyofdrinkingandfrequencyofhittingotherpeople.

  However,childrenwhoreporteddrinkingmonthlywerealsothreetimesmorelikelytobehit.Adolescentswhodrankbutdidn’tgetintofightsweremorelikelytobehitthanthosewhodidfight.

  ProfessorJonathanShepherd,wholedtheresearch,saidalotofpreviousalcohol­relatedviolenceworkhadfocusedontheoffendersratherthanthevictims.Histeamiscallingformorepreventionworkfromparentsandteachersinthefirsttwoyearsofsecondaryschoolbytakingadvantageofthe“teachablemoment”,thatis,immediatelyafterastudenthasmissedschoolbecauseofdrunkenness.
