West Virginia—Public schools are using a dance video game to help get students in shape. In these schools, students are often told to turn off their video games and get some exercise. The schools have found a new way for their students to work out while playing a new video game.West Virginia is one of the heaviest states in the country.About half of its fifthgraders are considered to be overweight, and their parents are worried about that.To get them moving on a healthier path, the state’s public schools are using a video game called “Dance Revolution”.
To use the game, players should stand on a special mat in front of a TV screen.Following arrows on the screen, players must move their feet to the specific symbols on the mat.Players must move quickly, touching symbols on the mat at just the right time. With each song, they get more exercise.
“If we can get children to change their behavior at a young age, they will hopefully grow up to be healthy and active adults,” said Carl Callison of Mountain State Blue Cross,a health care company.
West Virginia is ranked among the top three heaviest states.About a third of West Virginians are considered to be
obese (肥胖的).Even more are considered to be overweight.Extra weight can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes (糖尿病),some cancers, and many other health issues.
“One out of three children born in West Virginia today will have diabetes by the time they grow up,” said Nidia Henderson,a manager for the public employees’ insurance program.“That’s a terrible thing and not acceptable.”
All of West Virginia’s 157 middle schools are using the video game.School officials hope that all public schools in the state will use the game within the next three years. However, officials emphasize that the game is not meant to substitute physical education and health classes. The game will be part of physical education classes and afterschool programs.

(2010·山东高考题)Christopher Thomas,27,was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he noticed he was always tired and was losing weight fast.Diagnosed with diabetes (糖尿病),Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin (胰岛素) three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness, and even death. And if that weren’t bad enough,he had no health insurance.
After a month of feeling upset,Thomas decided he’d better find a way to fight back.He left Canton,Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created diabeticrockstar.com,a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources.

Even with a staff of 22 volunteers,Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while still doing his fulltime job waiting tables.“Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure,” says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar’s original members.“But Christopher is the only person I know saying people need help now.”

(2010·山东高考题)
Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling.Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need.We are dealing with the results of that_overconsumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005.It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK.In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK,for example,is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt,it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect.Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place.Food waste is a serious problem, too.Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However,a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us.We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope.As more of us recycle,we are beginning to realise just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.
71.What does the underlined phrase “that overconsumption” refer to?
A.Using too much packaging.
B.Recycling too many wastes.
C.Making more products than necessary.
D.Having more material than is needed.
72.The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show________.
A.the tendency of cutting household waste
B.the increase of packaging recycling
C.the rapid growth of supermarkets
D.the fact of packaging overuse
73.According to the text,recycling________.
A.helps control the greenhouse effect
B.means burning packaging for energy
C.is the solution to gas shortage
D.leads to a waste of land
74.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.
B.Supermarkets care more about packaging.
C.It is improper to judge quality by packaging.
D.Other products are better packaged than food.
75.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Fighting wastefulness is difficult.
B.Needless material is mostly recycled.
C.People like collecting recyclable wastes.
D.The author is proud of their consumer culture.

[1] Every language has its own special words and expressions. And a story can be told about each of them.Hot is a simple, easily understood word.So are most of the expressions made with the word hot.But not always,as we shall see.
[2] The words hot potato, for example, give you no idea at all to the meaning of the expression, hot potato. The potato is popular and many Americans like baked potatoes.Imagine trying to carry a hot potato in your hand.It would be difficult, even painful,to do so.Some publicly argued problems are highly emotional.The_problems_must_be_treated_carefully,or_they_will_be_difficult_and_painful_if_an_elected_official_has_to_deal_with_them.One such hot potato is taxes.Calling for higher taxes can mean defeat for a politician. And yet,if taxes are not raised, some very popular government programs could be cut.And that also can make a politician very unpopular. The questions must be dealt with carefully, the same way you would handle any other hot potato.
[3] Another expression is not so hot.If you ask someone how she feels, she may answer “Not so hot”.What she means is that she does not feel well. Not so hot also is a way of saying you do not really like something. You may tell a friend that the new play you saw last night is not so hot. That means____________.
[4] A hot shot is a person, often a young person, who thinks he can do anything. He is very sure he can succeed. But often he fails. The expression was born in the military forces.A hot shot was a soldier who fired without aiming carefully.
[5] Hot is a word that is often used to talk about anger.A person who becomes angry easily is called a hothead. An angry person’s neck often becomes red.We say he is hot under the collar.

M:But I told you I haven’t practiced for a long time.I don’t know if I remember any songs I used to play.
W:Don’t worry about it.I just thought I’d ask you to try and join us sometime when we were practicing. We’ll be practicing for a few months before we perform anywhere.
M:OK,I’ll try.
W:I’m sure you can do it.And it will be fun, too.
听第10段独白,回答第17至20题。
(Text 10)
I have been weak in hearing all my life.By the time I was five years old, putting on hearing aids in the morning was just as normal as brushing my teeth. However,I never believed that it should limit my success in any way.
I have been looked down upon during my 17 years. My head teacher told my parents I belonged in a school for the deaf.My classmates told me something was wrong with my brain.People speak louder than usual when they see my hearing aids in my ears. However,my hearing disability has made me a stronger person.I have had to work harder and achieve better grades in school than other students in order to earn the respect of my teachers. In sports,I have had to run faster, hit harder, catch better and score more points to prove I’m not physically limited.I consider myself no different from anyone else.In my struggle to prove I’m equal to my nondisabled classmates,I have made myself better than the average teenagers.
I truly believe I would not be the strong person I am today if I did not have a hearing disability.
