  United Nations Climate Change Conference

The UN Climate Change conference opened in Copenhagen,Denmark on Dec,7th with some 15,000 delegates and observers from nearly 200 countries attending what is called the last best chance for an agreement to combat (与……战斗) global warming.

Their aim is to find common ground, including on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, promotion and transfer of new more ecofriendly technology and the necessary funding to make this possible, especially for the less developed and poorer nations. It also means coming up with long term vision and cooperation for the future.

Most scientists believe the warming trend is mainly caused by human activity, especially the use of fossil fuels and the cutting down of forests.Skeptics (怀疑论者) say global warming is part of a natural cycle of climate change.

In Copenhagen, experts and officials alike are putting the emphasis on what people and governments can do to cut the emission of greenhouse gases.

Scientists say a 25 to 40 percent cut in carbondioxide emissions is needed to control global warming. The European Union,China, and India have already promised reductions. The United States is waiting for Congressional (国会的) approval for a proposal put forward by the Obama administration.

Barack Obama,President of the United States said,“Each of us must do what,we can when we can to grow our economies without endangering our planet—and we must all do it together. We must seize the opportunity to make Copenhagen a significant step forward in the global fight against climate change.”

Desmond Tutu,Archbishop of South Africa said,“Worldwide,we have the chance to start turning the tide of climate change, but only if all governments commit themselves to a fair, binding(有约束力的) and sustainable climate agreement in Copenhagen.”

By analyzing academic data from 10 states, representing the testing of more than 7.2 millions of youths,US researchers found that gender differences in math scores were extremely small among all ethnic groups in grades 211.

These findings are in contrast to earlier results from 1990 that indicate measurable differences favoring males in complex problemsolving, beginning in the high school years.

Janet Hyde from University of Wisconsin and colleagues reported their study results in the journal Science on Friday.

Currently, women are largely absent from the highest levels of careers in mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering. In the United States,Ph.D.programs in engineering currently average only about 15 percent women, and similar statistics have led to stereotypes (成见) about girls and women lacking in mathematical ability.

Now,it is clear that the general population no longer shows a gender difference in mathematical skills, according to this latest report.

And this new data on academic performance in the United States shows that students are tested frequently on “recall” and “skill/concept” items, but rarely on “strategic thinking” (战略思维) or “extended thinking” concepts.

If standardized tests do not assess the sorts of reasoning that are crucial to careers in science and math, the skills may not be taught, putting American students at a disadvantage to students in other countries where testing and instruction focuses on more challenging content.“This is a gap that should be fixed,” Hyde said.

61.What is the best title of the passage?

A.A new study result about math.

  B.No gender differences in math.

C.Girls are not good at math.

D.Girls do better in math than boys.

  62.Earlier research results________.

A.are the same as that of this latest report

  B.support gender differences in math

C.indicate girls prefer to solve complex problems

D.are the roots of many stereotypes about women

63.The underlined word “crucial” in the last paragraph most probably means________.

  A.limited

  B.available

  C.important

  D.equal

64.What Hyde said in the last paragraph means that________.

A.standardized tests should assess different classes around the world

B.testing and instruction should focus on more challenging content in the USA

C.students in other countries are cleverer than American students

D.students should be tested frequently on “recall” and “skill/concept” items

65.The passage is most probably taken from________.

  A.a learning guide

  B.a research paper

  C.a personal diary

  D.a newspaper

  C

It might have been a really bad stressful day, feeling trapped inside by the cold and snow which surrounded us.My husband was the first to shift his consciousness. He dressed

accordingly and announced that he was going outside to build a giant snowman.

At first he stood alone, piling massive amounts of snow.Soon after a neighbor joined my husband to embrace the opportunity the winter presented.Maintaining less than desirable attitudes,we reluctantly put on our snow gear (用具) and headed outside. It wasn’t long before we were smiling and enjoying the abundance of snow that Mother Nature had provided.Others came to our yard one by one to give a hand in the making of our giant snowman.

In the end we all stood back and marveled at what we had created. He was eleven feet high, twentyfive feet around at the base and decorated with many household items supplied by various families. There he stood, our glorious, gigantic (巨人般的) snowman.

People drove by and smiled. Some even stopped to enjoy his existence. The spirit that went into creating him seemed to catch on and we all enjoyed it while the cold temperatures allowed.

With the passing of time, the spring made its way back into our yard and the snowman changed form considerably. In a final effort to save what we created for just a little bit longer, somebody stopped by and changed the snowman’s remains to look like a rabbit.

As I prepared for the start of another week,I decided to check my email before going to bed.I found a curious message that contained the subject line:enjoy the snowman.I decided to read the message even though I did not recognize who sent it.The words it contained melted my heart.

The email said:...your neighbor looks on in disbelief!I am sure you people are enjoying the sounds and smells, along with sights of spring. The energy displayed in Mr Snowman or Ms,is filled with vigor and joyous energy. You and your family keep it up,as this is what the world needs now.Love sweet love.More power to you and your loved ones, keep sharing with the world around.

Perhaps it was more than snowman we built that day.I’d like to agree that it was.The message seems clear. Our circumstances will turn out to be what we make of them. The possibilities are endless and the choice is ours.

66.How did the author plan to spend that cold day at first?

  A.By having a busy day.

  B.By staying at home.

  C.By building a snowman.

  D.By visiting neighbors.

67.The reason for her husband to make a snowman was that________.

A.he had to please his neighbors

B.he was better at it than others

C.he wanted to cheer himself up

D.he must get the last chance before spring

68.From the passage we can know that the snowman________.

A.was built only by the author’s family

  B.was surprisingly big in size

  C.made people more forgiving

  D.made building snowman popular

69.Which of the following is NOT expressed in the email?

  A.Likes of the nice snowman.

  B.Sorry for snowman’s leave.

  C.Thanks for the family’s efforts.

  D.Appreciation of the author’s style.

70.The author told us the story in order to show that________.

A.there is a large collection of chances in our life

B.choices are more practical than possibilities

C.we must have our own ideas about our decision

D.we can determine our way of life through our choice

  D

①Some people who find themselves facing a problem react by just giving up.But it is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures. You may be sure that all young people go through the same difficult process that you are going through:meeting new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilities.

②If you are unhappy about something, face it.Try to state the problem in a few words,so

that you will know exactly what you are_up_against.Then see if you can “put your finger” on the cause of your unhappiness.

③In many eases,we only “think” there is no solution to a particular problem. But often we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.

④For example,a boy wanted to be a debater (辩论家).When he tried out for the debating team as a freshman, the coach thought he was hopeless. He was shy;he had a highpitched voice;and his posture(体态) was poor.Although he was given little hope of success,he took advantage of every opportunity to debate. He studied successful speakers and evaluated his own weaknesses and advantages. Then he spent many hours learning all the facts on the topics for debate, and worked at developing good posture and at speaking clearly.By his junior year,he made the school debating team, and in his senior year he was on the winning team in his state. He achieved his goal because he had made a direct attack upon his problem.

⑤Although direct attack is often the bestway to meet problems,we have to be realistic (现实的) in judging situations.Sometimes it is necessary to change either the method or the goal.

⑥A boy who wants to be a great football player may not be too strong and not quite fast enough for football. In this situation, becoming a great football player may be an unreasonable goal for him. However,he may become outstanding in tennis or golf, and satisfy his desire to take part in sports.

⑦A girl who is not goodlooking may decide that she cannot win popularity with her face, and so she may try to develop an interesting personality, which eventually will get her much further. In this situation, she must change her method of achieving her goal.

⑧So,although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems,it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.

71.From the first paragraph,we can learn that________.

A.it is really hard to escape from problems

B.people can solve all the problems that they meet

C.it is important for people to face the problems

D.few people like making excuses for failures

72.The underlined phrase “are up against” in the second paragraph could be best replaced by________.

  A.are interested in

  B.are faced with

  C.come over

  D.look after

73.Which decision was made by the boy who wanted to be a debater?

  A.Adjusting the goal.

  B.Judging situations.

  C.Changing his styles.

  D.Making a direct attack.

74.Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?

  (①~⑧stand for “Paragraph 1~Paragraph 8”)

75.The author showed the example of the girl in order to explain________.

  A.how important the appearance is

B.how hard to develop a good personality

C.how to achieve the goal in a different way

D.how to win popularity in a short time

  第Ⅱ卷 (非选择题,共45分)

  第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分45分)

  第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

Even if you really enjoy your job,it’s still possible to battle boredom as you work. You may not be able to make big changes—or change your job—but you can make small adjustments to your routine that can make every day seem, well,a little less routine.

  1.Switch Your Seat

Change your outlook at the office by changing your office.Ask your supervisor to help you find a new desk.Even switching desks with a neighboring coworker can offer a fresh atmosphere.

If it’s not possible to change your location, see if you can change your desk’s direction.A new view can be just as refreshing as a new location.

  2.________

Start and end your day in a different way.Consider a new mode of transportation,if it’s possible.Take a subway.Ride a bike on sunny days.Carpool with a coworker.Use a new route to get to your job.You needn’t change it for ever—just long enough to help you escape the boredom

  3.Find a New Work Style

Sick of attending that longstanding Monday morning meeting?Try to change it to the afternoon.

If you find yourself feeling most bored in the afternoons, try to arrange to do your favorite tasks then and tackle less desirable projects in the mornings.

If you usually communicate with coworkers via email and instant messaging, start dealing with people face to face.Increased communication with coworkers may help improve your mood.

  4.Get and Set a Goal

If your work is short of objectives,it’s no wonder that work has become boring.Identify a goal and set an “achieve by” date for it.

Your_goal_needn’t_be_high_as_long_as_you_have_sufficient_enthusiasm_for_it.Perhaps you want to make a new project.Maybe you’d like to pursue a promotion.Or you may even set a goal of finding a new job altogether.Whatever it is,actively move toward an objective.

  W:And these guys got away?

M:Yes.Escaped in a passing taxi. They are probably in another country now.

M:Rosie,I’ve got something to tell you.

  W:What is it?

M:Well,I’ve made a decision.I’m going to leave the hospital.

  W:Leave?What do you mean?

M:I’m bored with it.I want to do something different.

W:I see.How long have you been in the hospital? For two years?

M:No,I’ve been here for five years, and I’ve been in Brighton for six years.I want a change.

W:You’re leaving Brighton! But why? What are you going to do?

M:I’m going to Africa.I’ve got a job as a nurse with a volunteer organization. They want me to go to Nigeria.

  W:What?You’re joking!

M:Look,I didn’t tell you before because nothing was certain. But I got a letter this morning.Rosie,I will miss you very much, and I don’t want to end our relationship. But I want to see the world. You do understand, don’t you?

  W:Oh,yes,I understand!

W:You look like you’re really enjoying that. What’re you reading?

M:You know Snoopy? He’s such a cute little dog,and he always has such a simple way of expressing the truth of life.

W:I like the Snoopy series too.I never thought you would like cartoons.Don’t you feel they are too childish?

M:Not at all.Cartoons are fun not only for kids, but also for adults.

W:I quite agree. We adults need simple enjoyments in our stressful lives.

M:I like cartoons, too. Many of them are great works.

  W:Me too!What’s your favorite one?

  M:Ice Age.It’s fantastic!

W:Tell me something about the movie.I’ve heard about it,but I’ve never seen it.

M:Oh,really? It’s been out for a few years—I think it came out around 2003.It’s a classic—you really should see it.It’s a story about what happens to a group of animals at the end of the Ice Age.The pictures are beautiful, and the whole movie is very imaginative.

  W:Are there just animals?No humans?

M:There are only a few humans, and they’re not as hateful as they are in some other cartoons.

W:Oh,I can’t wait to see it.

M:I have it on DVD.I’ll bring it to you tomorrow.

  W:Thank you very much!
