To hitchhike successfully in any country you must be able to do two things:attract attention and at the same time convince the driver at a glance that you do not intend to rob or murder him. To fulfill the first requirement you must have some marks to let drivers distinguish you at once from all other hikers. A serviceman, for instance, should wear his uniform,a student his scarf. In a foreign country an unmistakable indication of your own nationality will also arrest a driver's attention.
When I hitchhiked 9,500 miles across the United States and back recently I wore a welltailored suit,a bowler hat and a trench coat, and carried a pencilthin rolled black umbrella. My suitcase was decorated with British flags. Having plenty of luggage, moreover,I was not likely to be suspected of being a dangerous lunatic (精神病患者).I then had to get across to the driver the idea that I was a real traveler, and needed to get somewhere cheaply.
But even with careful preparation, you must not assume that the task will be easy. You should be prepared to wait a little, for there are drivers who confess to a fierce prejudice against,(not to say hatred of),hitchhikers, and would no more pick up a hiker than march from Aldermaston to London. In America,my average wait was half an hour, and my longest two hours, but I have heard of people waiting all day—they probably took less pains to make themselves easy to notice.
Nor must you assume that all the drivers who stop for you are nice, normal people. On one occasion I found myself was with two boys of about nineteen who turned out to be on the run from the police, and were hoping to use me as an alibi(不在犯罪现场的证人).There are also lesser(较小的)risks:you may find yourself in the car of a Fascist fanatic,a Mormon missionary(传教士),or just a bad driver. You cannot tell,of course until you are in the car. But you soon learn the art of the quick excuse that gets you out again.
If the hitchhiker in the U.S. remembers that he is seeking the willingness of drivers to give him a free ride, and is prepared to give in exchange entertainment and company, and not go to sleep,he will come across the remarkable, almost legendary, hospitality of American of the West. It will also help if he can drive—I drove myself about 4,500 of those 9,500 miles I hitchhiked in the States.
1.A hitchhiking serviceman should wear his uniform ________.
A.so as not to look too unusual
B.to attract attention
C.to show he is on duty
D.to put the driver at ease
2.In Paragraph 3,we learn that the writer ________.
A.has sometimes failed to hitch a ride
B.has marched from Aldermaston to London
C.has always been successful in hitching a ride
D.has had to wait for long hours for a ride
3.In the last paragraph, the writer wants to tell us that a hitchhiker should ________.
A.not talk to the driver too much
B.fall asleep to make it a peaceful ride
C.try to make himself pleasant and entertaining
D.seek the willingness of drivers
4.A suitable title for the passage would be ________.
A.“The Art of Hitchhiking”
B.“An Englishman's View of the U.S.”
C.“An English Hitchhiker”
D.“The Joys and Dangers of Hitchhiking”

The Child ego state is a set of behaviors, thoughts and feelings which are replayed from our own childhood.
Perhaps the boss calls us into his or her office, we may immediately get a churning in our stomach and wonder what we have done wrong. If this were explored we might remember the time the head teacher called us in to tell us off. Of course, not everything in the Child ego state is negative. We might go into someone’s house and smell a lovely smell and remember our grandmother’s house when we were little, and all the same warm feelings we had at six years of age may come flooding back.
The Child ego states are constantly being updated. For example, we may meet someone who gives us the permission we needed as a child, and did not get, to be fun and joyous. We may well use that person in our imagination when we are stressed to resist our old ways of thinking that we must work longer and longer hours to keep up with everything. We might ask ourselves “I wonder what X would say now.” Then on hearing the new permissions to relax and take some time out, do just that and then return to the work renewed and ready for the challenge. Afterwards, rather than blaming ourselves for what we did or did not do, what tends to happen is that we automatically start to give ourselves new permissions and take care of ourselves.
Alternatively, we might have had an extremely unpleasant experience yesterday which goes into the Child ego state as an antique memory that stands in the way of our growth. Positive experiences will also go into the Child ego state as antique memories. The positive experiences can then be drawn on to remind us that positive things do happen.
The process of analyzing personality in terms of ego states is called structural analysis. It is important to remember that ego states do not have an existence of their own. They are concepts to enable understanding. Therefore it is important to say “I want some fun” rather than “My Child wants some fun.” We may be in our Child ego state when we say this, but saying “I” reminds us to take responsibility for our actions.
1. The writer uses two examples in Paragraph 2 in order to _____.
A. prove the Child ego state is negative
B. explain why we become nervous
C. support the idea in Paragraph 1
D. introduce the point of Paragraph 3
2. By asking “I wonder what X would say now”, we intend to __________.
A. blame ourselves
B. avoid stress
C. keep up with everything
D. accept challenges
3. According to the passage, the Child ego state __________.
A. exists in one’s childhood
B. shows one’s wisdom
C. limits one’s thoughts
D. influences one’s actions
4. The underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refers to __________.
A. “I want some fun”
B. “My Child wants some fun”
C. the Child ego state
D. structural analysis
