I've been writing for most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one difference and one practice that have greatly helped my writing processes. The difference is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to use both of the creative mind and the critical (批判mind to reach a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much we might like to think so.

Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibl the single greatest trouble with writing that most of us meet. If you are listening to a 5th grade English teacher correcting your grammar while you are trying to capture a fleeting(稍纵即逝的)thought, the thought will die. If you catch the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking as it is.

The practice that can help you overcome your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls“free writing”. In free writing, the goal is to get words down on paper non-stop,usually for 1520 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The aim is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas will come from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notepad or your screen.

Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.

Instead of staring at a blank start and filling it with words no matter how bad they could be,stop halfway through your available time and rework your raw writing into something closer to the finished product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.

  17. When the author says the creative mind and the critical mind“cannot work in parallel”in the writing process,he means _____.

  A. no one can be both creative and critical

  B. they can’t be regarded as equally important

  C. they are in constant conflict with each other

  D. one cannot use them at the same time

  18. What usually prevents people from writing on is _______.

  A. putting their ideas in raw form

  B. attempting to edit as they’re writing

  C. ignoring grammatical problems

  D. trying to capture their fleeting thoughts

  19. What is the chief purpose of the first stage of writing?

  A. To organize one’s thoughts logically. B. To choose an appropriate topic.

  C. To get one’s ideas down quickly.

  D. To collect many more raw materials.

  20. In what way does the critical mind help the writer in the writing process?

  A. It refines his writing into a better shape.

  B. It helps him to come up with new ideas.

  C. It saves the writing time available to him.

  D. It allows him to sit on the side and observe.

Almost every machine with moving parts has wheels, yet no one knows exactly when the first wheel was invented or what it was used for.We do know, however, that they existed over 5,500 years ago in ancient Asia.

The oldest known transport wheel was discovered in 2002 in Slovenia. It is over 5,100 years old.Evidence suggests that wheels for transport didn't become popular for a while, though. This could be because animals did a perfectly good job of carrying farming tools and humans around.

But it could also be because of a difficult situation. While wheels need to roll on smooth surfaces, roads with smooth surfaces weren't going to be constructed until there was plenty of demand for them.Eventually, road surfaces did become smoother, but this difficult situation appeared again a few centuries later. There had been no important changes in wheel and vehicle design before the arrival of modern road design.

In the mid-1700s,a Frenchman came up with a new design of road—a base layer (层)of large stones covered with

a thin layer of smaller stones.A Scotsman improved on this design in the 1820s and a strong, lasting road surface became a reality. At around the same time, metal hubs(the central part of a wheel) came into being, followed by the pneumatic tyre(充气轮胎) in 1846. Alloy wheels were invented in 1967, sixty years after the appearance of tarmacked roads(柏油路).As wheel design took off, vehicles got faster and faster.

“BANG” the door caused a reverberation. “Never set foot in this house again!” shouted father. With tears welling(涌出)up in my eyes,I rushed out of the house and ran along the street.

A young father who held a child in his arm walked past rile. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space:happy and harmonious(和谐).

But now I don't know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting old. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.

I wandered the street, without a destination in my mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people in the streets, until I had only streets to keep me company. When I finally reached the high rise apartment block in which I lived,I saw that the light was still on.

I thought to myself,“Is father waiting for me,or is he still angry with me?”

In fact,it was nothing. Perhaps,Dad was throwing some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps.

All the lights were off except father's.

Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn't know how to express himself. After shouting at me,he never showed any mercy or regret. After an argument he will creep(蹑手蹑脚)up in my sleep and then tuck me underneath the covers.

This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.

The light was still on. With the key in hand,I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last,I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love-it is second to none.

The United States is the world's largest consumer of energy. We use electricity, gas and oil to light and heat our buildings and run our cars. The demand for power is growing. But we may not need to build new power plants for or find more oil. The best way to increase our supply of energy is to be more efficient.

Did you know that when you leave your video-game console on, it consumes more electricity than two refrigerators? Or that those funny-looking, twisty bulbs use 75% less power than traditional light bulbs? We have the tools to save money, reduce pollution and even help our planet, simply by wasting less energy.

As President, Barack Obama plans to make energy efficiency in American a major goal. He has pledged to cut 15% of all energy used by the Federal Government. In a speech, he called for 75% of government office buildings to be updated for better efficiency. He pointed out that energy-efficient buildings and homes will save consumers billions of dollars on energy bills. An "extra benefit", he added, will be "a cleaner, safer planet."

Gas, coal and oil are called fossil fuels. Fossil fuels have been the world's main source of energy for hundreds of years. But burning them releases dirty gases, which cause pollution.

There are two main ways to save energy. The first is to use more efficient machines. Hybrid cars use less gas. New appliances are designed to use less electricity. Today's refrigerators are three times more efficient than those before 1973. Laptop computers consume much less energy than desktop computers.

The second is to use machines more productively. According to the US Department of Energy, in the average home, 75% of the electricity used to power electronic equipment is standby power (备用电源) . That means power flowing to plugged-in appliances whether or not they are being used.

Homeowners can avoid wasting power by pulling the plug on appliances when they are not in use. Efficiency experts argue that today's best techniques could cut US oil and gas use in half, and reduce our electricity use by three-fourths.

  4. The underlined word "pledged" in Paragraph 3 probably means ______ .

  A. promised

  B. wondered

  B. Obama has decided to take the lead to cut down the use of electricity

  C. it is time for the US to shoulder the responsibility for a cleaner planet

  D. the US is determined to improve energy efficiency in the whole America

  6. It can be inferred from the text that ______.

  A. to build new power plants or find more oil is no longer useful

  B. burning fossil fuels can lead to a growing demand for power

  C. everyone can make a difference by wasting less energy

  D. most of the electricity is wasted with appliances plugged-in

  7. What would be the best title for the text?

  A. The world's largest consumer of energy.

  B. The world's energy efficiency movement.

  C. We need to find new energy.

  D. We have to be more energy efficient.

Not all bodies of water are so evidently alive as the Atlantic Ocean, an S-shaped body of water covering 33 million square miles. The Atlantic has, in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization.Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlantic is rich in oceanic liveliness. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality has been much written about by ancient poets.

“Storm at Sea”, a short poem written around 700, is generally regarded as one of mankind's earliest artistic representations of the Atlantic.

When the wind is from the west

All the waves that cannot rest

To the east must thunder on

Where the bright tree of the sun

Is rooted in the ocean's breast.

As the poem suggests, the Atlantic is never dead and dull.It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise—it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing, and whistling.

It is easy to imagine the Atlantic trying to draw breath—perhaps not so noticeably out in mid-ocean,but where it meets land, its waters bathing up and down a sandy beach. It mimics(模仿)nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with symbiotic existences, too; unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat, a kind of sub-ocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities: sometimes peaceful and pleasant, on rare occasions rough and wild; always it is strong and striking.

68.Unlike real inland seas, the Atlantic Ocean is ________.

  A.always energetic

  B.lacking in liveliness

  C.shaped like a square

  D.favored by ancient poets

  69. What is the purpose of using the poem “Storm at Sea” in the passage?

A.To describe the movement of the waves.

B.To show the strength of the storm.

C.To represent the power of the ocean.

D.To prove the vastness of the sea.

70.What does the underlined word “symbiotic” mean?

  A.Living together.

  B.Growing fast.

  C.Moving harmoniously.

  D.Breathing peacefully.

71.In the last paragraph, the Atlantic is compared to ________.

  A.a beautiful and poetic place

  B.a flesh and blood person

  C.a wonderful world

  D.a lovely animal
