Onequarter of the US workforce could be doing their jobs at home if all those able to telecommute chose to do so,according to a study on Wednesday which said many still elect to work at the office.

All those people working from home could translate into annual gasoline savings of $3.9 billion, according to the National Technology Readiness Survey.

But the study also found that about 14 percent of the workforce has the option to telecommute but chooses not to.As the study’s principal researcher,Professor P.K. Kannan, put it:

That seems to suggest that even if employers were to say tomorrow that everybody had the option of telecommuting and that it would save a lot of gas, that’s not going to happen.

What’s going on?Some of it is obvious:people like to go to the office for social reasons, even if their work tasks don’t require it.And that’s not just to be around other people. Our social needs also include being seen, and making “right” impressions on bosses and colleagues. Our own research at Work Design Collaborative is completely consistent with that interpretation.

So how are we actually going to realize the energysaving opportunities that we’re missing? It seems to me there are two very basic actions called for.

First, organizations must make distributed work not only available but expected by more employees.Company policies and financial incentives can easily “push” workers into changing their patterns.Note that I am not advocating making everyone a fulltime telecommuter. But just getting half of the workforce to work from home or in a nearby facility two days a week would save 20% of the gasoline now being consumed by moving people from homes to offices.

Second,we also need some national public policy initiatives to encourage people to work from home. It’s time to realize just how critical telecommuting and distributed work are to our national security—on several levels. It’s about reducing our dependence on foreign sources of energy. It’s about business continuity in the face of natural disasters(Katrina, etc.) and/or acts of terrorism. And perhaps most importantly of all,it’s about reducing greenhouse gases as we address the global climate crisis I wrote about yesterday in An Inconvenient Truth.

1.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.Onequarter of the US workforce is now doing their jobs at home.

B.The people who prefer to work from home can not afford to telecommute.

C.Although they can telecommute,Americans still prefer to work at office.

D.More and more people who can telecommute prefer to work from home.

2.According to the study, people don’t choose to work from home because________.

A.the working culture now is still not favorable

B.people want to meet their social needs

C.people are afraid of falling behind their colleagues

D.people can’t work well without teamwork

3.According to the passage, the main benefit for people to work from home is that________.

A.there would be less traffic jams

B.working efficiency could be greatly increased

C.the energysaving opportunities could be realized

D.the relation between bosses and workers could be greatly improved

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards working from home?

A.He thinks it is too early to put it into practice.

B.He thinks it is ideal and not practical enough.

C.He thinks it is the company’s fault for its delay.

D.He is completely in favor of it.

5.The underlined word “incentives” in the passage has a similar meaning to________.

  A.encouragements

  B.pressures

  C.crisis

  D.services

Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance between their lives and what they see on TV.

The first difference is that a policeman’s real life revolved round criminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer, and what is more, he has to apply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down a street after someone he wants to talk to.

Little of his time is spent in chatting. He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilty of stupid crimes.

Most television crime dramas are about finding the criminal: as soon as he’s arrested, the story is over. In real life, finding criminal is seldom much of a problem. Except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist attacks, little effort is spent on searching.

Having made an arrest, a detective really starts to work. He has to prove his case in court and to do that he often has to gather a lot of different evidence.

A third big difference between the drama detective and the real one is the unpleasant pressures: firstly, as members of a police force, they always have to behave absolutely in accordance with the law. Secondly, as expensive public servants, they have to get results. They can hardly ever do both. Most of the time some of them have to break the rules in small ways.

If the detective has to deceive the world, the world often deceives him. Hardly anyone he meets tells him the truth. And this separation the detective feels between himself and the rest of the world is deepened by the simpleminded—as he see it—of citizens, social workers, doctors, lawmakers and judges, who, instead of eliminating crime, punish the criminals less severely in the hope that this will make them reform. The result, detective feel, is that ninetenths of their work is recatching people who should have stayed behind bars. This makes them rather cynical(愤世嫉俗的).

Police in 1.________ world Police on TV

  语篇定位

  本文是一篇议论文。美国具有发达的远程通讯技术,人们本来可以在家工作,但很多人并没有这样做。作者分析了其中的原因,并提出了自己的建议。

  长难句分析

That seems to suggest that even if employers were to say tomorrow that everybody had the option of telecommuting and that it would save a lot of gas, that’s not going to happen.
