Several years ago,Jim Turner heard a program on the radio for the N.C.Children's Hospital and decided he could use his love of origami art to help the hospital raise money for muchneeded programs.

So at the age of 13,Turner began making origami greeting cards and selling them to florists and book stores to benefit the hospital. His fundraising program, known as Heartbeats for Kids, has since raised more than $2,500 for the hospital.“The first cards I made had a heart in them and you could remove the heart from the card and make it beat,”Turner says, explaining how he came up with the name for the fundraiser. Now a 17yearold high school junior,Turner has less time to devote to cardmaking, because origami is a

intensive labor and each card can take up 30 minutes to design. But Turner still enjoys origami art and has created original designs that have been selected for exhibits that tour the country and world.

Turner is an interesting mixture of engineer, artist and philanthropist(慈善家).His mother,Peggy Turner, says folding origami is a combination of math and art that has helped her son develop his sense of space for 3D objects.Turner is also involved in community service at school and at his church. He was named a Distinguished Finalist this year for the 2010 Good Spirit of Community Awards for his service activities for the community, including the Heartbeats for Kids project. In the process of his volunteer efforts,Turner also managed to be one of the only 381 youths in the country to earn the top score of 2,400 points on his SAT test.

  Dear Dad,

Today I was at the shopping mall and I spent a lot of time reading the Father's Day cards. They all had a special message that in some way or another reflected how I feel about you.Yet as I selected and read,it occurred to me that not a single card said what I really want to say to you.

You'll soon be 84 years old,Dad,and you and I will have had the 55th Father's Day together.I haven't been always with you on Father's Day but I've always been with you in my heart. You know,Dad,there was a time when we were separated by the generation gap.You stood on one side of the Great Divide and I on the other.

The FatherDaughter Duel(决斗)got more fierce when you taught me to drive the old Dodge and I decided I would drive the 54 Chevy whether you liked or not.The police officer who sent me home after you reported the Chevy stolen didn't have much tolerance for a stubborn 16yearold girl, while you were so tolerant about it,Dad,and I think that was probably what made it the worst night of my life.

Our relationship greatly improved when I married a man you liked and things really turned around when we had our babies.Somewhere along the line, the generation gap disappeared.I suppose I saw us and our relationship as aging together, rather like a fine wine

But the strange thing happened last week.I was at a stop sign when I saw you turned the corner in that huge old car.It didn't immediately occur to me that it was you because the man behind the wheel looked so elderly and fragile. It was rather like a slap in my face from out of nowhere.Perhaps I saw your age for the first time that day.

I guess what I'm trying to say,Dad,is what every son and daughter wants to say to their Dad today.Honoring a father on Father's Day is about respect and sharing and acceptance and tolerance and giving and taking. It's about loving someone more than words can say,and it's wishing that it never had to end.

  I love you,Dad.

  Love,

  Jenny

Lego, the inventor of those colorful bricks that have inspired kids' imagination worldwide, has celebrated its 53rd anniversary.

In 1958,a man named Godtfred created the plastic building bricks that can now be found in almost every child's toy box.The simple building block has become one of the most wellknown and popular toys around the world.

“The Lego brick continues to be very attractive, because it allows children, and others,to develop their creativity and imagination,” said Charlotte Simonsen,a spokeswoman of Lego.

The company's building brick allows an endless number of links. With just two bricks there are 24 different links, and with six, there are 915 million possibilities, according to Lego.

A halfcentury after its creation, more than 400 million children and adults spend five billion hours a year putting the bricks together and pulling them apart. Also, the bricks made today can still link with those made in 1958.

Lego bricks aren't just child's play: they also attract the interest of adults.South Korean adventurer,Heo YoungHo,who climbed Mount Everest in 1987,left a Lego toy behind in the snow during his climb.

After its great success Lego experienced a serious crisis(危机)at the end of the 1990s,hit hard by competition from electronic games.Lego then suffered a dark period that lasted several years.

With great efforts, the company began to be popular again, and in 2006 it earned about 1.5 billion dollars in 130 countries.Seven boxes of Lego are now sold every second around the world, and 19 billion bricks are produced each year: enough to encircle the Earth five times!

In the computer age,a broadband Internet connection is very popular now.Whether cable or mobile broadband, today's connections are many times faster than those in the early days.Videos play smoothly, complex websites load quickly, and files download much faster than ten years ago.And the files are much bigger, too.

But there's still a_catch:_You have to live near enough to a major city to get broadband Internet. If you don't,there's slow dialup access for you.And for those living really far out, there may be no Internet access at all.

Technology experts often talk about the “last mile” problem, which refers to the difficulty of bringing Internet access to remote areas. In cities and suburbs,it's relatively easy to provide access for everyone. It is much more difficult to deliver access to those living far from cities, especially in developing countries.Internet service providers, for their part, have been unwilling to provide access to sparsely(稀少地)populated areas. The handful of Internet users they would reach wouldn't cover the expense.

But every year, technological advancements allow of more and more Internet users. Most broadband connections today run over existing cable TV and telephone lines although these technologies aren't available everywhere.

Some companies have delivered the Internet over standard power lines.Advancements in cheaper, more efficient fiber optics cables(光纤电缆)promise to bring extremely fast Internet connections to more users.Still, the “last mile” problem remains hard to deal with. There will always be somewhere that doesn't have an affordable broadband connection. But someday that might not matter. If the rapid progress in cell phone technology is any indication,it may not be too long before an Internet connection simply follows you wherever you go.
